first day, we started from hongmenyan pass following east terrace, hongmenyan, north terrace, central terrace, west terrace then take the white shuttle bus to go down. hiking path took 27 kilometers alone. we covered less than 7 hours. the highest peak is 3100 meters north peak.
if the sun is up and no winds, it is a fun walk. otherwise, one should be prepared for 10 degrees Celsius felt temperatures with wind shield.

second day, we started from opposite direction of caves through South peak reaching west peak. slightly shorter distance and less altitude gain.

two days are demanding for legs. sun cream and both heat and cold preparation are necessary.

temples are destroyed and rebuilt. nothing authentic. but nature, climate, ecosystem with local animals are amazing. there were also no air condition in the entire town, despite at the peak of summer the temperatures are so comfortable. advised trip for summers only.

I am just back from 3 days in Wutaishan. I stayed in Wutai town and did the day tour on the 5 peaks. I paid 135RMB entrance to Wutai and 350RMB for the van tour to the 5 peaks to see a tremendous ugliness and witness temples looking like bombarded construction sites or war scenes out of some horror sci-fi book, full of rumble and junk as you could see them trashing the old and bringing in the new statues and stuff. A horrendous sacriledge of what is supposed to be an ancient pilgrimage site. It was the cherry on top of the pie for me and I don't feel like visiting any more Chinese temples (there's nothing sacred left in these places, anyway) and 'scenic spots'.
Thankfully the mountain views are still beautiful.
As it was the birthday of a local deity on Saturday 17 June, the prices of the hotels skyrocketed, e.g. I paid 120RMB for Friday, 300RMB for Saturday (all other hotels were charging 700RMB) and 200RMB for Sunday.
At the back side of Dabai pagoda in Wutai town, I was deeply shocked to see people worshipping and prostrating in front of a statue of Mao Zetong.
Don't even think to hike up there, the dust roads are so dry you'll die by the amounts of dust you'll eat.

I had two lovely days in the mountains. I took a straight bus from Beijing Liuliqiao bus station to Wutaishan and back. Bus fare was only 145rmb/one way and the bus ride took 5h. This is the most convenient way to get to the mountain from Beijing. First day I visited some temples. Second day early in the morning I took a taxi (200rmb) near East peak to see a sunset. From there I hiked to north, central and west peak. I had some snacks with and bought more on the peaks with wechat. Locals helposti ed to find my way back to the city.

Had a lovely hike there and would come again!

It is really an adventure to visit these five temples in a day. The travelling was gruesome; the steep slopes and sharp bends, but the driver handles them pretty well. As of now, only this company's van can travel up the mountains. If you are going there, be mentally and physically prepared. It was 7* C up in the mountains in end May, but the wind is very strong (Face shield is advised).

People come to Wutai Shan mainly for its temples, and it has perhaps hundreds of them. However, our visit to this area is mainly outside of Wutai Shan, to a small temple near Doucun, about fourty kilometers away. That temple is Foguang temple. What's so special about this temple? Well, it is one of the oldest, and most well preserved timber structures in all of China, dating back to late Tang dynasty (857 AD). It has a fascinating story behind it as well. A renowned husband and wife team of architects, Liang and Lin, were collecting data on ancient wooden structures in China during the thirties. To their surprise, they just couldn't find any surviving timber structures from Tang dynasty, or before that. During that time, the only surviving Tang dynasty wooden structure, Horyuji temple, could only be found outside of China in Nara, Japan. Only in year 1937 did Liang and Lin discovered Foguang temple, and changed history forever (Liang and Lin later also discovered Nanchang temple of the same period around the same area). The temple is just amazing, with all its well aged timber roof supports, cracked pillars, colorful Tang period wall murals and sculptures. Strolling at its ground is like traveling back in time. Surprisingly, it is hardly promoted and has very little visitors. During our visit it was free too! Honestly, if you are looking for something grand and colorful, this place is not for you. But if you love history, and a good story behind it, I strongly suggest you pay a visit to this temple (it is best to read up a bit of history about this place before visiting), before it becomes really crowded in the future.
