Be advised. There is active logging and mining on the access road. You must carry a radio to avoid dangerous situations. The road is also washed out beyond the switchbacks. A high clearance vehicle is a must. The hike is closer to 2hrs up and 1.5hrs back. It is a day mission.

I work on the road daily and see a lot of vehicles towed out. It's a beautiful lake but there are a lot of other lakes easier to get to. Don't ruin your vacation due to lack of preparedness. There is no one out there to help you.

The hike and lake looked amazing but unfortunately we couldn’t get there due to the terrible road conditions. An off-road/high-clearance vehicle is an absolute must - not just recommended - unless you want to ruin your undercarriage. We got half up the road and ended up having to turn around which was tricky. Ended up scratching the paint on our new Ford Escape on the prickly bushes when turning around. Do not attempt to go here without an off-road vehicle. There really should be signs at the initial lake sign to notify of the road conditions/vehicle access requirements, as well as a large secondary sign past the golf course incase someone missed the first sign.

This is not an easy hike so I wouldn't take little children or anyone who can't physically handle uneven footing. We hiked through bush and over several little streams. Someone has built some footbridges so you wont get your feet wet unless you want to. We also hiked over a rocky section that is inhabited by marmots. When we reached the little glacial lake, we went for a paddle in the canoe someone hauled up behind a skidoo one winter. Pretty cool.😎
We took the wrong road on our first attempt so make sure when you come to a spot in the road where it splits 3 ways, take the middle road! The signage could be improved.
The hike took us about an hour to go up to the lake and half that coming down. It's a great activity to do with teens. This is an amazing little piece of paradise that makes me happy to be a Canadian.

Hiked to Gorman Lake on the 6/10/17. If you’re looking for a detailed guide to the trail head visit goldenhikes.ca As per previous reviewers I can confirm that the road leading up to the beginning of the trail is quite rough and better suited to 4x4 vehicles. We went up in a Nissan Murano and it was just fine. The trail is easily spotted and guides you through the forest. Once you get to the bolder field it gets a bit more tricky. There was a lot of snow up there already and finding the trail wasn’t easy. We did sink in knee deep on numerous occasions and nearly gave up! So glad we didn’t. The lake is stunning, a beautiful, wild little hideaway. We would have loved to spend some time there but with the freezing cold and changing weather conditions (and the dreaded, snow covered bolder field on the return journey) we thought it best to have a quick lunch, snap a few panoramic and head back. All in all it took us just over 3 hours plus 1.5 for the drive up. A must do experience!

Should have read the reviews first - horrible logging road and travelling with a rental van - not a good idea. Need 4 wheel drive to get in for sure. Had to turn around on a tight little road to get out. Road gets narrower and narrower. Saw huge bear scat on road so take bear spray for sure.

We were travelling as 3 families, 14 in all. I contacted Dave and he worked with us to come up with a great plan. Initially I thought it would be a small party fishing, but as I described the trip the entire gang jumped on board.
Dave had his truck and we had 2 large SUVs to drive up the logging road - it was awesome and part of the unique experience. Once there, off we began. Dave gave us all the direction we needed re safety and hiking tips. He brought all the fishing gear and provided lunches.
The hike in was little more challenging that we anticipated, but we all loved it and were amazed by the scenery. Snow, rocks, forest... all something we had never experienced before! We would all admit the hike in took a little longer than anticipated, but the feeling of accomplishment was exhilarating. The forest, the boulder field, the lake - all breathtaking.
Once we arrived, we were in awe of the lake. It was mid July and there as still ice in the lake! The hike around the lake was very challenging, but Dave provided instruction on hiking technique and we all made it to the other side. In retrospect, I think we would have sent a few in the canoe across the lake.
Dave we all 14 of us up with rods - he taught a few interested parties (myself included) how to fly fish. We caught some nice trout and took 2 home for the fry pan - thanks for cleaning them Dave.
Our trip was not without mis hap. One of or party twisted her ankle on the way out, Dave was very attentive. Fortunately she was able to hike out - whew.
The hike out seemed to go much faster...go figure down hill. Once again the hike around the lake was the most challenging.
We arrived safely back to the trucks and got back to golden.
I would highly recommend this location and our guide Dave, the "Golden Gillie". Not sure we cold have done it with out a guide. It was one of the best highlights of our trip and we now have a print of Gorman Lake on our wall.
Suggestions if you are considering this trip...
Call the Golden Gillie.
I do recommend that you wear hiking boots, we did not and that made it more challenging.
Yes the road is a logging road, but no big deal. I wouldn't take a small car on it.
Save time to take the canoe out - I think we would have liked that.
Be prepared for a 1-2hour hike in if you are not experienced - its worth it.

Thanks Dave!!

This hike was absolutely worth the effort of getting to the trail head. Once you get to the trail head you hike uphill almost constantly until you get to the lake (very doable uphill climb, not steep). The hike is nice and varied as you go from forest trails to picking your way through a boulder field before you wind up at the lake. Not a difficult hike at all, kids 7 and up could probably do it easily. Gorman lake itself is absolutely beautiful with its turquoise water and mountain views. There is even a canoe hidden off in a little cove for public use. I could easily have spent the entire day just sitting by this lake enjoying the scenery, my husband pretty much had to pull me away...he had the car keys so I had to follow :(

A lot of people will turn back when they see the state of the access road but the hike is worth it so you should really continue to the end. It takes about an hour to get up the 17 km forestry service road to the trail head as you generally are going between 10 and 30 km/hr to navigate the rocks and washed out sections. You will have some trouble in a low riding cars but any SUV will do it no problem.
