Meg was so informative. We were fortunate to see some penguins as well as fur seals, white-faced heron, variable oystercatchers; and we fed the sheep! The work being done at Pohatu Penguins is appreciated and needs to be encouraged. Thank you for all you do.

We had an informative and fun trip with Joey to her family farm to see how they help the penguins to nest and thrive. We were there in molting season. They maintain nest boxes which allow the penguins shelter and safety while nesting and molting. We hiked along a trail to a lookout to observe penguins coming into their nests at dusk. Joey drove a van from downtown Akaroa up some treacherous roads to get to the farm which was part of the whole adventure! We learned a lot about the little blue and white flippered penguins and enjoyed the whole evening.

Joey took on us a fabulous ride up and over the mountain as we transported two little penguins for rehab. We got to see where her family does all their conservation work with penguins. So many cute penguins and little penguin houses. We got to see them feed the two rehabbers. We hiked as Joey educated us on everything penquin. We got to an over look where we were able to see a few penquins coming to shore for the evening. This was a very special experience where we felt privileged to see penguins and how they are helping them so thrive. Your purchase helps to support their work.

Brilliant experience on this 4 hour trip with Joey, her knowledge was something else, she had lived and farmed in the area for over 20 years, and where the Penguin sanctuary was, was on her parents farm, and it was them who actually started the sanctuary. We saw Penguins in their boxes as at this time of year they are moulting. Would highly recommend this trip

It was a perfect day for kayaking and the sea was calm, which made it extra special. Ben and viola took great care of us and told us so many stories about these flightless birds. All in all a wonderful day. Thank you

We did the combo kayaking tour and evening penguin tour and both were excellent. The guides were knowledgeable and fun and we saw so much wildlife! I would recommend people making the drive out to Akaroa just to do this tour.

Amazing, just amazing! Kevin and Joy are knowledgeable, friendly and their commitment to these small creatures is palpable, but delivered with humor. This is a great tour for any age and interests. If you are anywhere near Christchurch. Our only regret is that we did not spend a night or two in stunningly beautiful Akaroa. Why is this place not on some list for the most gorgeous waterfronts on the planet?

We booked a 24 hour package and loved every moment. Check in was easy, the intro tour took us to some great viewpoints and Caitlin was a fount of knowledge on the eco history of NZ. The 3 HR downhill walk is very steep and we could feel it in our legs the next day, but worth doing.
We stayed in the gypsy wagon which was cosy and comfortable. We had lovely views straight out to the bay from our veranda. Watching the milky way re veal itself while sat out on the veranda with a chilled glass of wine was magical
The kitchen was adequate though we could not get the oven to work but managed with the hob. We came during moulting season so there were fewer pensions to see but we still saw some close up and some on the water.
The kayaking the next day was good fun and gave us close up views of numerous seals and pups, some little penguins foraging in the sea and five Hector's dolphins that came very close.
Overall this was an unforgettable experience and well worth doing.

This was ana mazing trip - the kayaking was superb and we saw lots of penguins in the bay. Vila was an excellent guide, with very clear communication concerning our safety and what to expect. We never felt in danger out on the choppy seas in the kayak because Vila explained everything so well.
The overall trip was amazing with some great photo stops on the way to the Bay south of Akaroa.
I would thoroughly recommend this tour company and the kayaking trip.

In June our tour left at 3.15pm. I imagine that in November (summer & daylight saving) it will leave about an hour later.

I will be coming on feb 21 around 10am via an excursion booked through celebrity cruises. What penguin species will I be able to see? I was hoping to see the white flippered penguins. is that possible?

Hi there, thank you for your message and interest in our colony. The penguins we have in the bay are the White flippered penguins for sure! The white flippered penguins are a variant of the blue penguins and they all belong to the same specie "australasian little penguin", the smallest in the world!! Here at Pohatu we have the biggest colony of little penguins on the mainland of NZ. They are found only in Canterbury area (region). Please note that at the time of your visit it will be near the end of the moult season so we should still have adults moulting in their nest on the land. Part of the colony will be already gone at sea. Looking forward to your visit!! Also please make sure you book in advance to secure a spot on one of our tours... Kindly, Geraldine & team

Is a tour required to see the penguins? We arrive at Christchurch in late-afternoon, not sure if we can make it in time for the night tour.

They are really helpful, do email them if they can arrange something for you. It’s their private property where they help look after the penguins.

We will be pulling into the port at Akaroa on December 7th onboard the Norwegian Jewel. Are there any tours or shuttles available from the port to the Pohatu Penguin Habitat? If so, how do we go about booking a tour or getting transportation to the habitat? Thank you.

Hi there,
Yes there is , We pick people up from the Akaroa main wharf on cruise ship days here, the tour starts from there with a scenic Drive over to pohatu penguin habitat, We have 2 land based tour options the 2 hour nature tour or the longer version (same place) 4 hour nature tour- we see more scenery and do more walking on this one. Both visit our funny sheep and get to see penguins up close as we monitor the nesting boxes, taking in the beautiful scenery of the outer coast of Banks peninsula.
Note; March is the only month penguins are likely not around.
We also have a Sea kayaking trip, with the scenic drive from the main wharf on cruise ship days.
Hope that's helpful.
Thanks kindly

Est ce que l'observation de pingouins fin mois d'août peut être la bonne période ?

Akaroa, New Zealand포스팅 1건
Bonjour.
Cordialement.
Kevin.

Hi ! For the sea kayak tour, how do we stay on the kayak ? Could we swim with dolphins if they come close to the kayak ?
How long is the entire tour ?
Could we see pingouins actually ? in water
Thank you for your answers !

Hi there, The 12 midday kayak tour is 4 hours total, We spend an average of one and a half hours on the water. Depending on sea conditions on the day and how comfortable everybody feels.
The tour starts with the scenic 4WD in our minibus over the hills to Pohatu Marine reserve.
Dolphins and Penguins and our seal colony are frequently scene as well and many different native coastal sea birds , But wildlife does what it wants and we have a wild life code we live by as not to disrupt their natural behavior. We are Doc Smart operators.
We don't do swimming with the dolphins, we just watch them from the kayaks when they choose to come close. Which is usually a pretty cool experience. Same with the penguins sometimes they are in the water and sometime sitting around on the rocks.
There are specific tours from the harbor cruises in Akaroa that run swimming with the dolphins tours, if you want to get in the water with them they provide very thick wet suits. I suggest when choosing a swimming with the dolphins activity to choose a DOC Smart operator, as this is a qualification given to operators that have done a course with the Department of conservation and commit to their activities having minimal disturbance on marine mammal behavior.
Hope that's helpful,
Thanks kindly

What company did you use and what companies have Pohatu day tour starting from and with return to Christchurch?
Can this also include Harbor nature cruise?

Hi there,
Sorry we don't do pick ups from Christchurch, But the French connection Shuttle works well with all Pohatu penguin day tours. They get you to Akaroa around 10am-10.30am and depart around 4pm , it gives us time to get you back to your bus. It also fits in well with the harbor cruise tours on Akaroa harbor.
But I think if you wanted to do two tours in the same day, our tour and the harbor cruise you would need to be here early morning and late afternoon, there are taxi company's that can take you from Christchurch, or you could hire a car.
Hope that's helpful.
Thanks kindly
Averil.

Is there a possibility of actually touching the penguins? Tks!

Hi there, Thanks for your question,
Sometimes we have penguins in Rehabilitation and Shireen or one of the guides will feed these penguins in front of you, Shireen only touches these penguins to feed them, we never cuddle or pet them because we want them to go back into the wild and not imprint on us.
You can see penguins up close on our tours in the nesting sites it's a very controlled manner we get to do this, only when we are monitoring with a guide we just have a quick look to see how they are doing, no touching, I know they are really cute and the chicks are really fluffy and it's hard to resist , But it's better for the penguins if we don't touch them unless we have to for an emergency situation. Mostly because we don't want to stress these birds out. It could be very harmful.
And also penguins have very sharp beaks and it's not something pleasant to be attacked with, they are aggressive little birds when they feel threatened , even the times we have had to rescue penguins in the past have left permanent scars on a few of the guides . But all penguins have different personality's so I can't judge them all.
All and all it's better for penguins if us humans don't touch them or get to close to them in the wild, they have to live their lives and we don't want to make it harder for the little guys.
Thanks So much for your question, it's one we get asked quiet a bit when on the tours.
You can cuddle our pet sheep though... They love a good scratch under the chin.

Hello and thank you for your interest. We are not running the Evening Penguin tours at the moment because it is the end of the breeding season and not many penguins are coming a shore but there are still a number of penguins still on land in the nesting sites going through the moult.
We run several day tour which you can found out about through our web site.
These tours are educational and research based, where you will join a research team and actively participate in protection work by monitoring nest sites and collecting data.
Thanks again and we are looking forward to hearing from you.
