The hike up is long (a couple hours) but worth it, and you can take the gondola down if you're exhausted. It has a great view that you can soak in while sipping a beer at The Sundeck. It also has a great disc golf course in you're into that sort of thing. It is also some world class skiing in the winter, with amazing backcountry.

If you’re visiting in the summertime, I highly recommend the yoga class at 10:20 am on Mon, Wed, Fri. (On Tues and Thurs, they offer meditation.) The hour-long class cost just $5, and the setting is unparalleled. You do have to pay for the $22 gondola ticket to get up to the top, but it was well worth it for the views and the yoga class, as well as hiking and other activities if you have time for it all. I would go out Aspen Mountain’s website for a listing of all events on the mountains, including bluegrass, guided hikes, etc.
I thoroughly enjoyed my morning of yoga, fresh air, breathtaking views, and a tasty lunch at the top of the mountain!

We took a gondola ride to the top of Aspen mountain and got some great photos and had a very relaxing and enjoyable time. There was lots to do on top of the mountain as they had Frisbee golf, corn hole, and other cool games to play along with a bar to enjoy a beverage and/or snack.

Having skied most every resort in the U.S. And Canada, Aspen mountain surpasses them all in every way. Because there are no beginner slopes, it is rare to find anyone on the mountain who does not ski well. While not as large as other mountains, it is overall the best.

Can't beat the views and scenery from a hike on Aspen Mountain, skiing it, riding the gondola, etc. It is so convenient being right in town and it is gorgeous. Food at the top is healthy and yummy - a great way to end a hike up!

Ute trail hike up to Ajax mountain. Hike is ~3 miles with ~3,000 elevation. Gondola ride down (it is free down the mountain).

Summer is here and some of the most beautiful sights you can see are at the top of Aspen Mountain. Take the gondola or if you have a jeep go up the front side of the mountain on the service road and then over Richmond ridge and back. BEAUTIFUL.

We were blown away by the beauty of Ajax mountain. My husband hadn´t been in a snowy place before, so for him the experience of riding up the mountain and enjoying the views from atop was even more spectacular.
All four mountains in Aspen are beautiful, but Ajax, in my view, is the most impressive.

It was great to see Ajax without snow on it for once. All of Aspen is gorgeous in the Spring & Summer and Ajax shows all the warm-weather colors on that steep descending mountain. Breathtaking!

My kids hiked the 5 miles up the mountain while I took the gondola. I arrived first and walked into the most glorious scenery ever. Snow dotted the mountain and covered the adjacent pikes. It looks like the Alps only it's accessible! It snowed while we ate lunch and rode the gondola back down. All in all, it was a fairytale experience.

If you can only go to one, which would you go to? Snowmass or Aspen Gondola?

Snowmass for sure. You have both gondolas and chair lifts and a ton of activities!

We are visiting in September and I see that the gondola is only open on weekends then. Are there any activities available on Ajax in September during the weekdays? Can you get up the mountain by car?

In September the gondola is open on weekends (Friday-Sun). Mid-week the only way to enjoy Ajax is by hiking it - I would suggest the Ute Trail or Little Cloud. Otherwise all the action and activities are in town. Enjoy your upcoming visit!

Unless you are seriously fit and have an hour or more to spare, I wouldn't hike up the mountain. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the top while riding the lift so walking it is not achievable for most, I think.
I can't remember the cost but once you're at the top, there's a casual but fun restaurant with amazing rides and the best snow-shoeing experience (but you need to buy your tickets for this before you get to the top).

How hard are the blue runs on Ajax? I am working on being totally confortable on blues and skiing parallel with good form. I am worried the blues might be too hard for me at Ajax? Super narrow and steep would be intimidating for me. Any Input? Thanks.

Hi Karen, I don’t ski - my other half is the skier.
Your best bet is to Phone a local ski shop, ask for a local who skis and have a discussion with them.
Just about everyone, in most shops are Aussies who live and work there just so they can ski there too.
