A magical experience! Beautiful water temperature, only a bit cooler than the tepid sea.
We had a group of 5 with 2 Guides from the resort (thanks Vilimoli and Sela from Nanuya Is resort). There were only a few other people in the caves when we got there and then only us.
Our lovely guides were super patient helping us through to the second cave at close to high tide... It was well worth it and a pretty short time under water.
There were great sarongs, shirts, dresses and jewellery in traditional prints that we hadn't seen anywhere else..So take quite a bit of cash, or you may be able to get an invoice (and your purchases) and the guides take cash back for you (assuming you have some back in your room).

They say not visiting the Sawa-I-Lau caves while visiting the yasawas is akin to going to Paris and not visiting the Eiffel Tower. With this in mind my partner and I did a day trip from our adjacent resort to see it.

On the positives the caves are quite interesting and a very unique attraction. We visited three - two of which required a very brief time submersed (perhaps 5 seconds) to access. There is a small amount of development (steps) to allow easy access.

On the negatives the space is quite small and at the time we visited a number of tour groups went through at the same time making it quite crowded and the noise in the echoing caves quite annoying.

Small souvenirs are available for purchase in front of the caves. If you don’t intend on purchasing anything there really isn’t any good reason to bring your wallet or any of your valuables such as your phone (you will need to leave them unattended in the boat).

Our tour left our resort (nanuya island resort) at 0915 and had us back by 1145 so this is possible to do on your day of departure.

Overall a worthwhile visit.

I never wanted to leave. I was one of the first in the tour group into the caves and last to leave. It was exciting to swim in the under water tunnel to the dark enclosed cave but I enjoyed the open cave much more. I could have stayed there forever. I saw one of the fish and made a wish I hope comes true. It wasn't the red fish but both fish should be magical. I highly recommend this trip!

This was my 2nd visit to these caves, my previous visit took place in June 2019 and I had written a long review on these caves after that previous trip. I really love visiting these caves because of the spiritual energy that I feel here. Please bear with me, as I know that discussions about the supernatural and spirits are not for everyone.

IMPORTANT NOTE 1: Any visit to these caves is a swimming excursion. The water in the cave is very deep, dark and cold. If you are not a strong swimmer, please wear a life jacket for this excursion. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is a rock to the side of the main cave which you can sit on, but the rock is quite small, and can only accommodate a few people at a time. That rock cannot accommodate everyone in your group, and many people will be fighting to get onto that rock. Weak swimmers should think twice before considering to explore the 2nd cave. To enter the 2nd cave, you have to swim underwater for around 2 meters and the conditions in the 2nd cave is pitch black.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2: If you are a strong swimmer and experienced snorkeler, please bring your mask, snorkel and fins for this excursion. You will be able to move around the 2nd cave more easily with your fins. Most of the time, there will be many groups of tourists from different resorts visiting these caves at the same time. Therefore, it can get very crowded in both caves at times.

Now, I wish to give a little bit of explanation about the spiritual energy that I mentioned at the beginning of this review. According to the locals who have lived in the northern Yasawas since time immemorial, the Sawa-I-Lau caves is the abode of a 10-headed serpent god called Ulutini, and he is the guardian of the Yasawa islands. If you are sensitive to spiritual energy, like myself, you will be able to tell that the energy inside these caves is different, compared to the energy outside. It is difficult to describe, but I think the best word to describe this energy is: Pure. And legend has it that there is an eel and a snapper who are immortals, and they live in these caves. During my previous visit, my friend who accompanied me here captured footage of the snapper in the main cave on his Gopro.

Anyway, these caves are really unique and give overseas visitors an opportunity to experience something that they seldom get to do: go swimming in a cave! Please be careful not to bump your head against the low-hanging rocks on the way into the caves.

I would highly recommend a visit to these caves, for most people it is an opportunity of a lifetime!

Well worth the trip. Stunning caves, great opportunities to swim around and explore the back/dark caves. There are a few fresh water eels which were great to see.
Opted to take along fins and a mask. Happy we did. The fins allowed you to enjoy the caves for longer and the mask makes ducking under the rocks to the back cave easier.

A steep passage to enter the caves looks immensely dangerous , a lovely place though the water was extremely cold , a must visit when in Fiji 🇫🇯

The caves are interesting and the swim throughs are fun, but the experience was spoilt by how busy it was. At 9am there were more than 30 people in the caves, which made it so noisy and very crowded - especially as visibility is poor, this crowding made me feel quite unsafe
You will be out of your depths - wear fins!
A really cool site to see, but try to find out the least crowded time to go

We had a visit to this cave as part of our 3 night cruise itinerary. The crew made us sign a waiver before entering the caves which made us even more afraid. It is a rocky way up the steps which are slippery and you have to be careful while making your way. On the way down down the steps you have to bend down and mind your head as the rock can hit your head. The cave has a combination of fresh and salt water and the water temperature is cold. Lucky for us our guides had prepared us mentally of what to expect in these caves and we were ready for it. The cave (as advised by the crew is very deep) and for a non swimmer like me I had to wear life jacket and had 3-5 noodles for my support.

There is a place just before the entrance to the second cave where you can stand on the rocks or even sit down on the rocks and relax before you proceed any further. You have to take a underwater swim holding your breath for 5-10seconds (depending on tide) to reach to the second cave. The second cave is very dark and torch is required to show you the way.

If you are claustrophobic then the second caves is definitely not a place for you and if you are not sure to enter the waters then there is place where you can stand and admire the caves without getting wet. If you are visiting Yasawas then you definitely need to visit this famous cave and see it with your own eyes.

I have read reviews: many of people writhed that this cave is not interesting, it is difficult, or dangerous. I can't agree. The first grotto is similar to a high medieval Catholic Cathedral, but not made by people. Magnificent spectacle. But we were lucky, our boat was the first, and we visited the cave in silence. Later, it became crowded and noisy. Local guys jumped from the rocks, one guy jumped almost from under the arch, it was definitely dangerous for him. The water in the cave is not particularly cold, because it is ordinary water from the warm ocean, it has a free exchange. There is no sun in the cave. Diving into the second grotto is not particularly difficult for those who can swim and can hold their breath for at least 10 seconds. In the tunnel there is a small turn, but the guides insure and show the direction, you need to swim to the light of a torch. No need to be afraid and no need to panic. The second grotto is also interesting, you can swim in it, some niches receive daylight from the outside world. Good experience and good contrast after swimming among corals.

This is really a five-star trip when all the stars align. By that I mean if the tide is low and the crowd is small, you will get the full experience of cave snorkeling in this beautiful spot. We were the very first group to arrive, and the beauty and effect of having that space to ourselves can’t be overstated. We had plenty of time to swim and explore the first chamber before and after the inner cave. We spied a couple of eels which was pretty cool. One of guides did a cliff dive, which may not have been possible with more people. The light steaming down onto the vegetation on the walls was pretty magical.
Our guides were excellent. Small children were in our group and the leader emphasized it would be his call if there was any question about whether anyone, adults or children, could do it. The tide was high and the entrance to the first inner cave was completely submerged. He had everyone plunge at least three times to look at the entrance before attempting passage.
The first inner cave is beautiful. Limestone flows, stalactites and fins surround you. A narrow chimney on side peeks into the sky above, otherwise it’s dark. Floating platforms offer a grab-hold while you look around.
We could not enter the second chamber because of the tide.
Sheltered from the sun, the water is cool but not cold. Once we left the cave and entered the ocean, it was as if the hot water tap had been left open. We snorkeled for another half hour in the cove before boarding and returning.
Also as we climbed out was a line of people coming in. There were two more boats full of people sailing into the cove. The experience would probably not be as serene with more bodies and voices in the chamber. I would love to go back at low tide. With a high tide and a crowd it might rate four stars but it would not be the fault of the cave.
