Hiked this 14er in late July after living in Denver for 10 weeks. Pretty close to Denver - we drove here early in the AM so that we could beat any afternoon thunderstorm. First 14er ever, and I did it with bronchitis. Fun and fairly easy, as far as 14ers seem to go...

Hearing summer weekend crowds form a conga line up the mountain, we planned a Tuesday hike. Arriving at the parking lot just before 6am, several cars were there and a few arrived as we put on our gear. Toilets at the trailhead. People were well dispersed on the trail, maybe saw 100 people through the day. The summit was lightly populated with proud and happy hikers, enjoying their celebratory snacks and drinks.
Trail is extremely well maintained, e.g., shrubs cut back and steps made from rocks in many places.
At ages 65 and 66, we were definitely the elderly demographic, but it can be done! We’ve lifted weights for 2+ years and walk 3-5 miles a few times a week, so we were in shape. But our hometown is at 600 feet elevation, so hiking at 11-14000 feet was VERY difficult. That, and my wife wears a major knee brace for arthritis.
Good hiking boots and poles a must. High stepping up and down through the middle and upper sections needs poles to lessen the stress on knees. Last section to the peak is sometimes hands and feet climbing boulders, but the boulders are stable and provide solid footing. Recommend closely following the several cairns in this last section, as making your own trail becomes extremely difficult, frustrating and treacherous.
Weather was perfect and winds were light. We saw bighorn sheep, mule deer, marmots, pika and snow quail. Hikers were supportive and enthusiastic about this day God had delivered to us all. So grateful we safely completed this hike.

This hike is one of Colorado's 14ers, about 14,060 feet. We hiked it in early August, and it was my first 14er. Easy drive to the trailhead. There are two large parking lots, so if the first one you get to is full, just drive a little further down the road (1/4 mile), and you will see another large lot. Both parking lots have restrooms. People also park along the road between the two lots. Wear good hiking boots, bring plenty of snacks or sandwiches, and lots of water. I suggest trekking poles as well. Beautiful views. The trail was extremely easy to follow. Start early! We started at 5:00 am. Only the first mile of this is an easy trail. Then it gets continuously steeper and more rocky. Not easy, and not for children under 8 or 10. We saw very few kids on the trail. According to my Apple Watch, it was 8.5 miles round-trip. Recommended if you are looking for a challenge.

Mount Bierstadt! It’s one of the closest 14-ers to Denver and pavement to the trailhead. What’s not to love? The locals will tell you: crowds. The summer crowds on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays can look like a conga line. It’s a summit to be avoided — unless you really like people watching in the high country....

I’m writing this review because it’s still a great summit! You just need to think about timing!

Guanella Pass remains open until December 1 and that’s when the plowing stops. But there can be some great days in late September thru November! You can actually still summit in the winter but it’s a longer climb from the Naylor Reservoir Gate.

Bierstadt on an autumn day can and remains spectacular. It’s a common saying that there are easier 14-ers but no easy 14-ers and this is true! The last 500 feet elevation gain to Bierstadt’s summit is a talus scramble and sporting.

I’ve been climbing-hiking this peak since the 1960’s when Guanella Pass was unpaved and there were no boardwalks thru the willows. It’s still one of my favorite local destinations but I avoid summer weekends. On my visit in November on a weekday, I only saw 5 people the whole day and saw more goats than people!

One last reminder! There is a parking lot for Bierstadt on the east side of Guanella Pass. But there is also a nearby parking lot on the west side of Guanella Pass for Squaretop that adds only a few blocks to a Bierstadt climb if the east side parking lot is full. (And if you can’t stand the summer crowds on Bierstadt and you are in the area, give Squaretop a try!)

Prior to my visit to Keystone, I had never even heard the term "14er", however, my friend said it was a bucket list item for hikers and this mountain is classified among the easiest so we did it. Remember to bring a backpack with lots of water and food snacks, and although there are no toilets (beyond the parking lot), bring toilet paper just in case the need arises while on the hike. Pack gloves, a cap/sun hat, and a rain jacket just in case needed. We arrived at 8:15am with the parking lot almost full. The climb starts with a descent of about 200ft before crossing over a creek (be careful here as easy to get shoes wet if you step on a slippery stone) and starting up the mountain. Although I haven't hiked in over 30 years, as an avid cyclist I am in great shape so I did find this fairly easy except for near the top where you're climbing with your hands on boulders. We saw a 60something couple hiking with their 30 something daughter with the mom having to make frequent stops to catch her breath. We eventually passed them and never saw them again so they must have had to turn around prior to reaching the top. The trail is well marked with rock stacks (cairns) except when you get to the boulders (where the cairns are harder to spot) so best to follow someone familiar with the hike over the boulders. Although I didn't have any real health problem getting to the top, on the descent, I ended up getting a headache, which stuck around until the next day and this was after taking a couple Ibuprofin prior to the start of the hike. The highlite of the hike was seeing an F14 jet fly below us through the valley while we were at the peak. Wooosh! My friend, who has hiked this mountain as well as several other 14ers had some breathing issues going up so our pace was slower than expected, taking just under 3 hours to reach the summit and about 2 hours to descend. No breathing issues on the descent, just be careful of loose rocks. Although it didn't rain on us, we could see storm clouds in the distance starting to roll in so I see why it's suggested to start the hike right at sunrise so as to finish before noon and avoid any early afternoon storm.

One of Colorado's 14,000's peaks with easy access to! The trail starts right out of the parking lot to the peak. The 1st mile or so is very easy than the climb begins for the next 3 miles. The trail is well marked and in good shape. The views at the top are amazing. Not an easy hike but you'd better be in shape and remember the altitude!

This was our second fourteener and we loved it! But I disagree with alot of the reviews/websites I read. This hike is TWELVE miles long, not six! (Same thing happened on Quandary Peak - reviews & websites gave mileage that was wildly inaccurate.)

Also, its trailhead starts at over 11,000 feet, so little kids might already be winded from the start and it's probably okay to take them up to 12,500-13,000 (***depending on how they feel***) but it is NOT appropriate to try to take them to the top. Our hearts broke over the number of terrified, exhausted, MISERABLE children we saw on this hike, with parents dragging them along against their will, not understanding that altitude is much harder on their little bodies, and they don't have the verbal skills to tell us that they have a horrible headache, or that they're nauseous or lightheaded! Also, the rock scramble at the top is no joke, and requires you to use feet AND hands. It is TREACHEROUS for children or for anyone not paying extremely close attention. I cannot emphasize enough how strongly I oppose the idea of trying to bring small children on this hike. We left our child at home because, like any sane hiker, we respect the mountains, especially the 14,000 foot ones!

My other gripe is the unleashed dogs. KEEP. YOUR. DOGS. LEASHED. Our hike was rampant with mountain goats, marmots, pikas, and snow quail, all of which could easily be killed/spooked by the many unleashed dogs we saw running around. And if your dog gets gored by a mountain goat (not unheard of), they'll put the goat down for "being aggressive", which is completely unfair to the goat. We are up there to respect nature, not to harm it, so leash your dogs!

Okay, enough ranting. About the hike. Bierstadt has an easy downhill flat beginning but a stream to cross at mile 1 that can range in height depending on the rainy season, And stones to cross on if it’s shallow but they’re slick and dangerous so I brought waders for that part. And the ascent is more gradual after 13k although I stopped to gasp about every 30 feet. Then an insane rock scramble for the last 500 feet or so that has to be done on all fours and could be treacherous for kids or those not paying very close attention. I've also read that because of the little waterways running throughout the mountain, the rocks can be very slippery depending on how wet it is. I believe it's because of this rocky terrain that Bierstadt is bumped up to a Class 2, despite being regarded as "one of the easiest" 14ers. Despite Bierstadt's rock scramble, I still thought Quandary was harder (read: steeper).

I don't think it's a given that you'll see mountain goats but we were VERY lucky to see some up close. Saw lots of marmots and one pika, as well as some snow quail and a golden eagle!

That last mile of the descent is tough because it’s back uphill on exhausted legs.

But it was a beautiful and very rewarding hike that I highly recommend! It seems a lot of people don't take this 14er seriously. We saw crazy people starting their ascent at noon with a storm rolling in. (That's insane. You should be off any 14er by then due to storms.) So do start early (before 7am), bring lots of water (2-3 liters), and shoes with lots of traction to traverse the loose stones (preferably boots), and use poles if you're out of shape like I am.

Enjoy!

This is a great first 14er if you're new to tackling Colorado's highest summits. I went with a large group of people and we got started early before 5am from Guanella Pass Trailhead. This is a popular mountain being relatively easy and closes to Denver so start early to beat the crowds and the thunderstorms. We hiked in late June 2019 so half of the trail was covered in a lot of snow but it was easy to walk on in the morning with microspikes when the snows was still hard from the previous night's freeze. Several hikers went up without spikes by stepping in foot holes from hikes the previous day when the snow melted some and then froze overnight but I wouldn't recommend that approach. This is a beautiful hike as are all hikes in Colorado and certainly every 14er. We came from Texas and acclimated to the altitude earlier in the week, doing that plus staying very well hydrated, and bringing layers and rain protection you should have no problems staying safe on this mountain. One word of caution, some hikers attempted the Sawtooth over to Mt. Evans (another 14er) and one of them fell and injured themselves pretty badly. Do not attempt the Sawtooth if you're inexperienced or without the proper gear and/or weather conditions.

I have been wanting to hike a 14er since my son moved to Denver 8 years ago.
Finally - we did it as a family. My husband and myself (60's) and my son and daughter-in-law.
We planned and prepared and trained.
It all paid off.
I had no idea what to expect. Bierstadt is one of the easier 14ers, but a 14er is no joke!
Bring plenty of water and high calorie snacks.
Dress in layers.
We lost the trail at one point and used a lot of energy going on a steeper route than the trail.
Look for the cairns.
The snow was plentiful this year, so bring your micro spikes.
We saw picas and marmots and mountain goats.
We came from Ohio and were in Denver 3 days before the hike, so we were slightly
adjusted to altitude.
We cheated just a bit with some Oxygen Boost. It is an aerosol can
of aviator grade oxygen. I can't say it relieved all feeling of breathlessness, but it did help.
I would describe this hike in 2 words.
Wonderful and terrible.
I think I have my one and done, but I am so happy we did it.

Hiked up here to combo with Sawtooth and Evans. Beautiful drive up the Guanella Pass and hit the trailhead at 6:30 am. Pretty east first 2 miles on easy class 1 trail. The last bit is class 2, but not bad. You do lose some elevation as you go down to the lake, but not a big deal. The last 1.5 miles are so weren't bad either. We made it up in 2 hours keeping a decent, but not crazy pace. Incredible views at the top. We ultimately kept going to combo the Sawtooth (not as bad as it looked, but definitely took a while to get down Bierstadt and across) and Mt. Evans.
