This is the largest surviving samurai row house in England [Ryoma; 90.9m in the east wing; 83.6m in the west wing] and may be the most impressive landscape in terms of tourism in [Matsusaka]. Step inside one of the 19 surviving houses in the West Wing, which is open to the public, and you might be surprised in another way if this is the residence of a 40-stone Kishu clan family. The impressive landscape is probably the one that stood on the cobblestones of the 45-year-old and combined with the fence and the one that looked at the castle guard house from the ruins of the Tokugawa jinya and the tool storehouses in the Matsusaka Castle. As far as I can tell, the Atsusamori Hagiyashiki Nagaya (Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) is the second largest samurai row house after this one, but it is much smaller at 51.5 m between beams [it is also designated as a National Important Cultural Property].

The beauty of the neatly trimmed hedges is eye-catching. Most of the houses within the hedges still appear to be inhabited, giving the town a living, vibrant feel. I admire the determination of those who live here and maintain the townscape.

This tenement house is worth seeing. The roof, which makes you realize the word "Nagaya", is an amazing word. There are places where you can tour the inside for free, and you can feel the historical atmosphere. As a side note, the roads throughout the area are paved with cobblestones, and the crosswalk in front of the high school adjacent to the tenement house was made of stone and buried instead of painted, and I felt that they were particular about this as well.

I was surprised to learn that people are still living in samurai tenement houses that were built 150 years ago. One of the houses is open to the public, and the residents take turns being guides every day. On that day, the visitor was a descendant of a samurai family that moved here 150 years ago. She stood tall and spoke clearly, making me think, "This is what the daughters of samurai families were like back then!" Even today, the descendants hold memorial services for their ancestors and family every year. The houses, fences, and roads are all neatly maintained, and I felt refreshed as I imagined the spirit of Japan in the distant Edo period.

This was a samurai residence from the end of the Edo period. It is the remains of the existing group residences (tenement houses) where the Matsusaka Castle guards lived. Ten houses in the east wing and nine houses in the west wing remain. The east wing is a single-story building with a span of 90.9 meters. It is said to have been the residence of Kishu samurai who were in charge of guarding Matsusaka Castle during the Edo period.
The central corridor is paved with stone. In front is the ruins of Matsusaka Castle. The group residences, which were samurai residences, continue to be used and maintained as residences almost exactly as they were back then. One of the houses can be visited. People are still living in the other houses. The interiors have been preserved as they were in the Edo period. It's amazing that people are still living in these houses.
On December 10th, 2004, it was designated an Important Cultural Property by the national government as the "Former Matsusaka Castle Guard Tenement Houses."

松阪の素晴らしい道並みです。石畳みの上を静かに、素晴らしい生垣を見ながら歩きました。中の屋敷は現在も使われているようです。日本でも有数の綺麗な道です。
