It is a full-service facility unique to World Heritage sites and worth seeing. That requires time and physical strength. But you can learn about the history from Edo to modern times.

It was registered as a World Cultural Heritage site, so I took a high-speed ferry to see it between Nagaoka fireworks.
It is a sightseeing tour of Sodayu Pit (World Heritage Site) and Doyu Pit for about an hour.
The World Heritage Site is the Sodayu mine, and this one was interesting to see a part of the remains of the mine in the early Edo period while viewing puppets, and the last museum.
The path is a new tunnel that operated from the Meiji period to 1989, and when you go out through the tunnel, trolleys and machinery are on display, and when you look back from there you can see the split doors.
If you walk to the front of the split door and back, you will walk a little bit, so you may want to just look away from the mine exit.
I'll upload a photo like that.
The site of Kitazawa Floating Mill is in the immediate vicinity.
It was also excluded from the World Heritage list, but I think it's a good idea to stop by for a set.
It was more interesting than the Iwami Silver Mine in Shimane, another World Heritage Site.

Having followed the UNESCO heritage debate on Sado Island's historic gold mines, I was on the island when it was declared a Unesco heritage site, I visited the mines just a few days after the announcement.
The mines are easily accessible by public bus systems (Google Directions works perfectly). There are two mine routes you can purchase the pass for - I strongly suggest you just buy both routes. Total time is about 2 hours to complete both comfortably.
You will start with the main Sado gold mine area (right side path), following a trail of animatronics detailing the process of gold mining and its challenges during the Shogunate era, followed by a museum with miniature models of the gold refining process. (There's an actual gold bar for you to play with too). Once you exit the gift shop, return to the main entrance and start the second parh
The second route "Doyu" (left side) is a bit more artsy with some projections and light shows - you'll want to take this route because it eventually opens up into a vista where you can take a photo of the iconic double peak mountain.
Some tips:
1) the mines get cold very quickly, even in summer, bring a light jacket. It is also damp and water drips from the ceiling, walk slowly and carefully.
2) there is no reception underground, there is however free wifi - you will need it for Google translate services as not all the infographics and detailed descriptions are translated to English.
3) there were no Mandarin and Korean translates as well (I assume they are now working on it post UNESCO award).
This is a must visit for all visitors to Sado island!!

We were blown away by how well this "tourist attraction" could display and explain the gold mining process. Opened in 1601, and ceasing operation in 1989, this gold mine is open to the public. Animated robots are used to depict mining operations in a very realistic way. Descriptions were made in English and Japanese. It was so easy to envision just how hard these gold miners' jobs were.
You enter and progress at your own pace. It was a FAR better experience than we could have imagined. We definitely recommend a visit -- for adults, children, whatever.

The Sotafu Mine was interesting because it recreated a realistic landscape.
The Doyu Mine was a bit boring, with just a tunnel.

Another quick stop on our tour which was super interesting. Walking down and through the mines and seeing the animatronic robots recreating the conditions that the workers lived and worked in was really cool. The walk isn't too long but can get slippery in certain sections since it's underground so be sure to wear good shoes. The soft serve with gold flakes in the store at the end is a must to get!
