Lovely surprise to find the wall paintings

We arrived here from Kelmscott Manor, in search of William Morris's grave. After walking all round the church there was no sign of it, so I went into the church. In the porch were directions to the grave, which is on the east side of the churchyard behind a bush. However, the quiet, holy atmosphere in St George's was just lovely. It is sad that services are only held here once a month , but I expect the officiating clergyman has quiet a number of churches to look after as well as this one. The north transept has some faint, but interesting wall paintings, cleaned up in memory of a former officer of the Society of Antiquaries who own Kelmscott Manor. Adam and Eve appear, thrown out of the Garden of Eden, among other Old Testament themes. On the organ was a card with one of my favourite prayers on it, Composed before the battle of Newbury during the Civil War. This is a really lovely little church, and must have held a warm place in the heart both of William Morris and his family, for their grave to be situated here. A fitting last resting place for someone to whom continuity and tradition mattered.

Make sure you see the wall paintings

Came to see the grave of the Morris family but blown away by the wall paintings. There is an Adam and Eve and Cain and Able. In a side chapel with some information about them. It is a special place. In April the church yard was full of wild flowers.

A beautiful chuch and burial place of William Morris

A lovely old chuch with some very important drawings on the walls which are most visible in the North chapel, there are some typed sheets telling about the 12th century drawings and the restoration work that has been done. The church is very small and a service is only held once a month. Buried in the churchyard behind a bay tree is William Morris and his wife. A very quiet and restful place to visit with lots of history.

I have to admit that I'm a bit jaded about visiting churches after all the ones that I've seen but this is a little gem and I'm glad that I visited. Be sure to look for the remnants of the old paintings.

Norman arches and great 1280 wall paintings

Well worth a visit for the wall paintings alone, a very nice little Norman church. Church yard includes William Morris and family tomb - worth a look as unpretentious but interesting.

Site of the Morris family grave

St George's church is probably of most interest to William Morris fans. The church, which was repaired in the 19th century under the guidance of William Morris, has some beautiful 13th century wall paintings and is a good example of Morris's philosophy of leaving later architecural/decorative additions intact. The Morris family grave, situated behind a bay tree, is marked by a tomb designed by Phillip Webb. Unfortunately the inscription on the tomb to William and Jane Morris is weathering badly.

The burial place of the Morris family

The church is very simple and unpretentious and is a very good example of an ordinary English village church. The give-away is the Strawberry Thief hangings either side of the altar.
William Morris, Janey and their daughters are buried in a very unpretentious grave in corner of the churchyard shielded by a bay bush. It was a bit of a let-down and would like to see it fenced off and treated with some dignity as opposed to apparently being a seat for smokers and stuck behind a bush but I appreciate Morris's Socialist principles.

A church in good repair, lovely singing and organ music, helped by a theatrically arranged funeral for a well loved local character.
