Whilst the ice cream was the very best we have ever had, the young lady who served us at the ice cream can at Instow, was the most miserable girl . Makes you wonder why she is in the job. Not a smile, or hello or anything. Buy from somewhere else next time.

Well it’s great to know that the best ice cream ever never changes. Hockings has in my view been the best ice cream I have ever tasted and remains so today. A 99 with clotted cream is out of this world. Local vans provide this wonderful confectionary and can be found based in Instow, Sainsbury’s car park at roundswell, BIdeford park, westward hoe and it’s home in Appledore. It’s creamy and delicious, just got to be done. They do stop selling from October until March I believe so if you haven’t tried one yet don’t delay.

I was looking forward to tasting one of these again, after 60 years of first experiencing this ice cream royalty. Having bought a double 99 on Northam Burrows, I was disappointed. Although good, it had lost that original battery rich taste, and although still superior to the bland more corporate ices, the magical and so distinctive flavour was just not apparent. Very sad.
Also the Burrows were jammed full of cars and families, and the lonely splendour of the beach beyond the pebble ridge with the surf crashing in the background was just not there.

We popped into Appledore for lunch had a delicious crab sandwich from the Coffee cabin.
We fancied a sweet treat so had a Hockings ice cream from
the van parked opposite the Coffee Cabin in Appledore . The ice cream is produced and sold locally. I had a small tub it was a good size and Delicious and if you feel like an extra treat have a dollop of clotted cream on it. Yum.

Ok went to Westward Ho! today ,I go a lot nearly always have an ice cream from a hockings van ,today was no exception I had one scoop in a tub for £2.30 and was absolutely shocked at the miserable amount of ice cream that I was given , I complained to the young man serving me and said it was too small he gave no quarter and basically shrugged his shoulders so I said that will be the last I ever have from Hockings , I literally had enough ice cream to barely fill an egg cup ! Will buy my ice creams from supermarket in future

Great local ice cream, worth a small queue. Can but freezer packs to take home and lots if different nice cones. Clotted cream on top a must!

Best vanilla ice cream I’ve ever had. Simple little van but I don’t remember ever having ice cream that good. Ignore the lollies, get the real stuff.

The nicest ice cream! We overheard a family talking about this ice cream whilst having a meal in the New Inn in Goodleigh and had to come and try! Wow, how nice. We had ice cream with clotted cream on top and it was delicious! I can’t wait to be back in a a few weeks!

Hocking's is a must when visiting Devon! Each time we visit we make sure we get an ice cream from one of these vans! We visited Devon recently and were sad that the factory was closed as it's off season!

Hi - how did you manage to travel with the ice cream? I live in leeds now and have been trying for years! just last weekend I had 2 freezer tubs (chocolate and salted caramel), wrapped them in bubble wrap, placed a bag of ice on top and put all of them in a cooler bag.. but they were all melted when we arrived in leeds 6 hours later. i still put them in the freezer tho and will try to eat it tonight and see... hopefully it won't give me a tummy ache
