The beautiful remains of an 11th century castle in the picturesque Norfolk Countryside. though parking can be problematic, stunning views of the village and the impressive earthworks create an unmissable attraction for anyone visiting the area.

A great place to visit either for historical interest or just a good walk. Along with the village, church and priory it’s a fantastic example of a Norman settlement, and the earthworks of the castle are impressive. There is a lot of information provided on site - if your imagination needs a bit more help there are also some great artist’s impressions of what the castle looked like in the 12th century online (I’d recommend looking at those done by artist Sue White). Plenty of walks which incorporate the castle and priory can be found online also. Do take a decent pair of shoes as some steps are steep/uneven. Owned by English Heritage but free to visit - there is a small car park nearby.

Pretty impressive structure, particularly for the time it was built. Children would love running up and down the mound, although I guess English Heritage might object though, being stuffy as they are - it has a small car park which might get busy in the summer; there's a café in the village which opens on a Thursday, Friday & Saturday & a nice looking restaurant also in the village - the church is worth a look around too, but don't forget to make a donation for its up keep.

We are EH members so took advantage of a self guided tour which prompted lots of discussion! Information boards are helpful and offer factual historical information. A little muddy but paths are obvious. Interesting visit. Not far to the priory either.

Within easy waiting distance of the priory and free to visit. There is little left of the building but it is still interesting enough to visit and makes a nice walk.

The car park at the castle is free, from recollection, as is the castle itself. The abbey ruins at the other end of the village charges for entry.
