10 minute walk from Hiraizumi station admission fee 700 yen cash only. There are many treasure halls, main halls, and kaisando around Oizumigaike Pond, and this course is about an hour's walk. The shooting spot is a pond-neutral stone called Chutateishi, which symbolizes the scenery of the Motsuji garden. As a souvenir, he bought 700 yen per year of Amida Nyorai.

I was able to go during the Ayame Festival.
I went to the end of June and it was in full bloom and beautiful.
There is a Heian period style ship floating in Oike,
It was good to see the atmosphere.
We also saw lotuses related to the Fujiwara clan.

We received a limited time goshuin.
I also bought a goshuincho. There were also three kinds with pretty fine woven patterns.
I'm very satisfied.
The old man who was selling it was funny and humorous.

Almost no buildings remain at Motsuji Temple, and it has become a place to enjoy the pond and scenery.
For garden lovers, it is a great spot.
I slowly enjoyed the scenery as I changed locations.
I got the feeling that Fujiwara no Motohira, the second lord, through to the third lord Hidehira, must have admired the buildings and style of Kyoto.
Apparently there was a building at the time that was modeled after the Phoenix Hall of Byodo-in Temple in Uji.
Towering behind the Motsuji Temple garden is Mt. Kinkei, which is said to be "a symbolic mountain that became the standard for the development of Hiraizumi."
In Oku no Hosomichi, Matsuo Basho read, "The summer grass is the remains of men's dreams."

Mōtsūji is one of the constituent assets of Hiraizumi, a World Heritage Site.
The Pure Land Garden has been restored and a beautiful garden pond spreads around Oizumi ga Ike Pond in the precincts.
The temple grounds are home to the Mōtsūji Garden, which is designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.
There used to be two large temples (Kondo Enryuji and Kajoji) across the pond.
Before that, there is a Pure Land garden.
Excavations revealed that it had been well preserved in its original state.
It is one of the few remains of the late Heian period.
It is also a valuable remnant in the history of Japanese gardens.
Oizumi-ga-ike Pond represents the sea and Tsukiyama represents a rocky mountain approaching the coast.

Speaking of sightseeing in Hiraizumi, Chusonji Temple is the first thing you hear about, but it's likely that you'll only learn about Motsuji Temple when you go there.

Frankly speaking, it's not that well known considering it's a World Heritage Site. If I hadn't found out about this temple on TripAdvisor beforehand, I probably wouldn't have gone here.

It's a garden temple with a spring at its center. There's nothing special to see, so I recommend researching the cultural background of this temple beforehand.

You can walk there from Hiraizumi Station, but I think it's better to take a bus on your way back from Chusonji Temple. Take the bus to Hiraizumi Station from the bus stop at the foot of Chusonji Temple, and it's the next bus stop after Hiraizumi Station (it was 170 yen)

About a 10-minute walk from Hiraizumi Station.
Admission fee is 700 yen. This Tendai sect temple was founded in 850 by Jikaku Daishi Ennin. It was rebuilt by the second and third lords of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, Motohira and Hidehira, but all of the buildings and pagodas were lost in subsequent fires and wars. The Jogyodo Hall was rebuilt in 1732, but the main hall was rebuilt in the Meiji period. The current main hall was built in 1989 and is new, made of wood with some steel frame and copper roofing. The principal image is a standing statue of Yakushi Nyorai. Although there are remains of the temple complex, almost no historical buildings remain, and the highlight is the Pure Land garden centered around the restored Oizumigaike Pond.

The Hiraizumi episode of Bura Tamori started here. Speaking of Hiraizumi, it's the Golden Hall of Chusonji Temple, which is also a World Heritage Site. The large Oizumi pond and the gardens surrounding it are magnificent. There are several halls around the pond, and their structure is similar to Chusonji Temple, which has many smaller halls in addition to the main hall. The structure of the Yarimizu water feature is magnificent. Next to it is the ruins of Kanjizaio-in Temple. It's a little far from Chusonji Temple, so if you have a rental car, it's convenient to get around the Chusonji area, not just here.

We visited in on a misty autumn morning and were enchanted by this wide-open Heian-style garden - one of four Pure Land gardens in Hiraizumi.

From the time we entered we drank in the splashes of autumn colour, the pont tied to the moss-covered banks, the floating dragon boats and small temples dotted around the woods that creep down to the central lake's edge.

I'd say spring or autumn are the better times to visit but this reminded us so much of Okayama's Korakuen but in the north.

If you're visiting Hiraizumi to see the better known Chuson-ji, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is well worth the visit.

I went in after seeing Chusonji Temple and learning about the history at the Hiraizumi Cultural Heritage Center.
Doing it in this order had the advantage of allowing me to understand the historical background before visiting.
If you had gone in to Motsuji Temple right away when you arrived in Hiraizumi, you might have ended up with the impression that it was just a large garden, and it might even feel boring.
There are many ruins of ``XX'' that stand out, but it is moving to think that these are buildings that remained after a time of great splendor and decline.

If you want to know more about the historical background, there are detailed explanations in the Treasure Museum.
Since you can enter for just the admission fee to Motsuji Temple, it is essentially free, so I think it's a good deal.

In early December 2023, I revisited Hiraizumi for the first time in over 40 years. As a certified guide I often take visitors to Japanese gardens, and explain the history and styles of Japanese gardens, of which paradise gardens is one major style. One focus of my visit on this occasion was to reinforce my understanding of paradise gardens. There are three paradise gardens (Motsu-ji, Kanjizaio-in Ato, and Muryoko-in Temple Ruins) in Hiraizumi alone, of which the garden of Motsu-ji was part of a temple complex even grander than Chuson-ji Temple in its heydays. The gardens of Motsu-ji is the earliest of the three. I had organized a guide to take me around Motsu-ji and Chuson-ji, which was the right thing to do, as it is difficult to fully appreciate Motsu-ji's heritage without indepth knowledge of the historical context. She first guided us to where a grand gate once stood leading to the bridge across the pond. The grand gate was called Nandaimon, meaning the grand south gate. Paradise gardens are designed to house the sacred statue of a Buddhism figure in a building on the opposite side of the pond. The opposite side of the pond was believed to be the Pure Land (Jodo). Typically, the sacred statue would be that of Amida Nyorai, believed to help common folk reach paradise. In Motsu-ji temple’s case, this was a Yakushi Nyorai, a benevolent figure that would heal all wounds, perhaps because Motohira Fujiwara, the second Fujiwara lord, wished for peace in the region. Do not miss the picture of the reconstructed temple complex and garden by the grand gate remains (unfortunately no English translation is provided). Keep the picture in mind as you explore the temple complex ruins and garden, which gives you an inkling of how grand the temple must have been in its heydays, even grander than Chusonji expanded by Kiyohira, the founder of the Fujiwara Family. We then went to walk around the pond clockwise. We were shown the main temple buildings one by one. Only the foundations remain of the main buildings. We passed by one active building the Kaizando, commemorating the founder of Motsu-ji. The next to visit was Kasho-ji Temple which sat to the left of the main temple building. I understand archaeological evidence suggests that the temple can be dated back to the 9th century, much earlier than the main building. Judging from the foundation as well as the reconstructed image, Kasho-ji must have been as grand as the main temple building. This was followed by a visit to the site of the main temple building, Kondo Enryu-ji, which housed a 4.8 meters tall statue of Yakushi Nyorai. I tried to keep viewing the pond as we moved clockwise. According to the English explanation provided by the Japan Tourism Agency, “The Motsuji Temple Garden was constructed according to Heian period (794–1185) principles of garden design that focused on the use of gardens to replicate larger natural landscapes in miniature form. The garden’s central pond, Oizumigaike, represents the sea, with additional features that emulate a beach, a rugged coastline, and a stream that flows from the mountains to the sea. Large rock formations on the southwest shore of the pond (tsukiyama) recreate the rugged coast of Japan, while a peninsula along the eastern edge (suhama) simulates a coastal promontory that changes shape with the ebb and flow of the lake. Additional rock formations, called dejima ishigumi, line the southeast shore. Nearby, within the pond, another rock formation creates the impression of a coastal shoreline. Its focal point, the Ikenaka Tateishi, is a single stone that rises 2.5 meters above the surface of the pond”. Our guide provided a similar explanation as we traveled around the pond. We next came to a wooden building, the Jogyodo (Circumambulation Hall), reconstructed in 1732 which is an active building, housing a statue of a crowned Amida Nyorai (Amitabha). At the eastern edge of the pond, you can catch a glimpse of Kanjizaio-in Ato. The guided tour took about an hour. Accepting that it was early morning on a Saturday, visitors were sparse. I guess a lot of visitors go to Chuson-ji and skip the paradise gardens, but I would recommend a visit to the three gardens, as it will certainly serve to help appreciate the paradise that the Fujiwara lords aimed to create in the 12th century. Admission fee is 700 yen, and well worth it if you have the help of a guide.
