We easily spent an hour or more exploring the cobbled streets and historic centre of San Ginesio and stopping for coffee in the main piazza.
San Ginesio is absolutely charming. A small, medieval, hilltop town, it is very picturesque with stone houses, cobbled streets, a central piazza surrounded by historic buildings, churches and panoramic views over the countryside.
Our first sight of the town was the 14th century defensive walls which surround the historic centre. Half of the original eight medieval city gates still remain.
We enjoyed wandering the lanes within the walls and then made our way to Piazza Gentili, the central square.
Here you will find a cluster of historical sights including the magnificent Collegiata church, the Giacomo Leopardi Theatre, Palazzo Onofri and the monument to Alberico Gentilli, a 16th century local who is remembered as the father of international law.
We stopped in the piazza at Le Logge for coffee and a simple bite to eat.
Sadly San Ginesio was badly hit by the 2016 earthquakes so you will see a lot of steel cables and ties wrapped around some of the oldest buildings. Safety concerns mean that you cannot enter some buildings like the Collegiata church and the theatre.
Nevertheless, San Ginesio is a beautiful town and it is well worth visiting if you are in the area. It has been awarded the Bandiera Arancione (Orange Flag), a mark of excellence in tourism, hospitality and environment. It is also listed in the Borghi Più Belli d'Italia (most beautiful villages in Italy).
