A small, medieval, hilltop town, San Ginesio is encircled by 14th century walls that protected the town from aggressive neighbours. The walls were high enough and thick enough to make potential invaders think twice before attacking.
We easily spent an hour or so exploring the cobbled streets and main piazza of San Ginesio that lie within these defensive walls.
The walls were first built in 1308 and took 150 years to finish. You can still see original features like towers, defensive walkways, crenelated parapets and loopholes.
Four of the original 8 medieval gateways still remain (Porta Picena, Alvaneto, Ascarana and Offuna).
We entered through Porta Picena which is a good entry point. It has an imposing archway and is very close to the Ospedale dei Pellegrini di San Paolo, a 13th century pilgrim hostel.
