The beach is extremely ruff very crowded. We timed this around the cruise ship. We decided to take a car instead of anchoring off shore. Which was a good choice based on conditions. My adventures kids and husband climbed the big boulders and I joined them. Hubs got ahead of us and we got stuck and had to swim around. It was not a good situation and I definitely know better. Googled after and found quite a few drownings out there. Stick to the hike which was very cool and safe. I would stay out of the water.

2 national parks in 1! The hike to and from the top was hot and rocky at times. But it made swimming in Devil’s Bay all the better. The hike, wade, climb and more through the Cave at the Baths was better than we imagined. It was both breathtakingly beautiful and fun to go through this natural obstacle course.

The Baths National Park in BWI is a breathtaking venue that is way too crowded on cruise ship days. We were on a cruise ship tour of about 125--so I can't speak for when the cruise ship crowd isn't there. We had decided from reading the reviews that some in our party would take the easier way down--our tour group guide gathered those people together and convinced most that they were overreacting and could easily negotiate the tougher trail. Yes it was beautiful--the cactus landscape and the views of the sea were stunning. However, the trail itself was a huge traffic jam all the way down to the beach. Then on top of the slow pace and crowds--folks that were in individual small groups (not on the cruise ship tour) were told that it was OK to go around the crowds and bypass all of us standing in line to proceed further. Once we got down to the "baths" area where there was protected water surrounded by rocks, it was body to body crowded. We were so worried about the limited time we had on the tour and how long it took us to descend down the path (due to crowds) that we immediately got in line for the more difficult paths thru the boulders to get to the beach. Their were steep stairs that were slippery (going up and down) and areas where you had to hold onto a rope or rail in order to maintain your balance, there were slippery boulders that one had to traverse bending down to about 50% of your height, and there were areas that you had to pull yourself up a boulder using a rope. There were also some areas when you had to step down 2 feet--that's where I saw several folks with skinned knees who had fallen. Now I am in my 70's and walk daily and had very minimal difficulty with this path--but at least 1 in 10 of the people in line had no business being on that path and many had been told at the top of the trail "you'll be fine--don't go down the easier path." Going thru the boulder paths took about 45 minutes (would have probably taken 5 minutes with no lines). When you finally reach the beach area there are picnic tables and a bar where you can buy drinks and food. (Bring cash). The water looked very inviting considering how hot it was--but there was a red flag and no one could go in the water due to dangerous waves and currents. The path back up to the top is not steep--just uphill all the way with some steps. Took about 15 minutes at a moderate pace for me. In summary--this is definitely a beautiful area--but figure out how to go on a day or time when it's not so busy.

This is a great beach on a beautiful island, so laid back, a perfect place to sit on the rocks drink a beer and watch the sailing boats go by or even drop anchor so that passengers can enjoy a visit to The Baths. Good little bar on the beach and restaurant above. Visit whenever possible you will not be dissapointed.

What to say !!! Unique, spectacular! Without words... to get there there are two routes: 1 Passing through Davil Bay (paradise on earth), a fairly complicated route suitable only for those who have no difficulty moving around. 2: simpler route. In both cases I recommend closed shoes and slippers in your bag. On site bar and area with tables and benches. At the top restaurant.

A must visit when sailing the BVI. We moored to a ball but the red flag was flying meaning it was dangerous to take the tender in and swim ashore....although some were doing this. We carried onto a slip at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour and took a taxi to the Baths. Quite a walk down to get to the start but well worthwhile. Quiet when we visited, don't visit at a time when large cruise ships are in Road Town.

I highly recommend independently booking the ferry from the Tortola cruise port (Roadtown) to Virgin Gorda to visit The Baths. There are several ferry options, but you need to be careful to check the departure and return times as they may change when the cruise ships are in port.

FERRY Options
I took Sensation Ferry but also have options with Speedy’s or Smiths. The cost is the same - $40 round trip including $10 for the open air taxi from the VG dock to the Baths. You want to pick the one that best fits your cruise schedule and allows for flexibility on return. I found the schedule online was different from what I found when I got to the dock so you want to try to confirm beforehand, I see no reason to book in advance as it is easy to book when you get there. The ferrys are not crowded (less than 15 passengers outgoing)) and plenty of indoor seating w AC, Very comfortable ride,

TIMELINE
I got the 10:20 Sensation Ferry. It is about a half mile walk from the ship to the ferry location. Just walk to the left after leaving the port and walk along the water thru empty parking lots. Less than 10 min walk. The ferry takes 30 min from Roadtown to Virgin Gorda, then a 10 min taxi to The Baths, so got there by 11:00 am. Return taxi from Baths was either 1:30 (w 1:45 departure - back to Tortola by 2:15 and ship by 2:25), or take 2:30 taxi for 3 pm ferry and 3:30 back to port. I opted for the 1:30 taxi which gave me 2.5 hours to visit the Baths.

BEACH OPTIONS
I have made this trip 3 times now. The first two we stopped at Spring Bay which is about a half mile before you get to the Baths. You need to tell the driver beforehand that you want to get off there as they do not normally stop. This beach is much less crowded, has the same huge boulders and great snorkeling. You miss the CAVES (and no facilities) if you go there but based on the smaller crowds I prefer it. Warning that locals go there and there can be some pot smoking (the second time there this was a problem). Not sure how common that is.

99% of people (and all tours) go the BATHS. Here there are three basic options:
Most common is to take the trail to the left which is about 15 min to get down to the CAVES which is a trail under the huge boulders. Very crowded as it took about 30 min to get thru 260 m long trail. Most of the time you are waiting for the old people to climb the ladders and scoot under the rocks. It is spectacular but frustrating when so crowded. You need decent shoes to walk the trail to the Caves (flip flops not recommended) but then you take shoes off when walk thru the Caves as in ankle to knee deep water at times. There are some steep 6 step stairs (nearly ladders) so it takes some strength and flexibility to maneuver. I did not find it at all challenging but others definitely did. That’s the problem with the old cruise passengers who struggle with it.
Other option is to go to the far left to Devils’ Bay. I did not do this but I heard others did this and never did see the Caves or the Baths. I think it’s a bit less crowded. Maybe a 15 min walk to this from the top with somewhat steep steps.
Last option is to skip the Caves and just go the right directly to the Baths beach. Takes less than 10 min and less steep than path to the Caves. The Caves can only be walked in one direction so if you go to the Baths first you can not enter the Caves. The Baths can be terribly crowded when the cruise ships are in Tortoia. It was not too bad this time but the last time when I swam over from Spring Bay it was incredibly crowded. This is a common complaint. They do have facilities at the beach for drinks, lunch, lockers, souvenirs… Only shade is by the boulders. It is a beautiful beach but again the crowds are a problem. I snorkeled from the Baths but the better fish were off to the right as facing the water. I swam all the way to Spring Bay beach which is about 600 m away plus a 400 m walk. It is a fairly easy 10 min walk back to the Top of the Baths where the taxi picks you up. Also a nice restaurant there with a beautiful view.

TOUR vs INDEPENDENT FERRY
I met up with many from our ship at the Caves who were doing exactly the same as I was doing but for a cost of about $120 vs the $43 I paid (including the $3 fee to enter the Baths). The big advantage (in addition to the cost) for independent reservation is flexibility of schedule. Had I wanted I could have gotten an earlier ferry (maybe 8 am) and spend 4 or 5 hours at the beach. I had two options for return so could have stayed another hour if I wanted. I much prefer the independent option. The only downside is that if you have trouble walking a half mile, then the cruise excursion includes a shuttle from the port to the ferry site in Roadtown. That was not an issue for me so much prefer the independent option.

A place to see once in a lifetime, impressive to see how the sea can smooth and form a place like this with the rocks... you almost find it hard to believe that it is natural. We disembarked with Costa Fortuna and, keeping to the left, we arrived at the ferry pier. The ticket also includes a taxi (open vans) which, once you arrive on the island, will take you to the start of the route..., a 20 minute walk amidst these wonders and you arrive in paradise, we went snorkeling,
seen a small ray and other Caribbean fish. All done independently, we returned on board at 4pm with great peace of mind

I've wanted to visit The Baths for several years and I was not disappointed. It's amazing how beautiful it is. The color of the water as rarely seen and what a setting. The one-way route is not too long and does not require much physical fitness. You have to bend over in a few places, go down a few stairs and climb a few but there are always ropes to hold on to. There is no place to leave our things so don't arrive with your arms full. Arrive in swimsuit and water shoes and small backpack. When you arrive on a cruise in Tortola, the ferry is a 10-minute walk to the left after leaving the boat. The price of the crossing includes transport to get to the Baths in Virgin Gorda.

I have been sailing the islands for 30 years and this was always one of my favorite spots. Not anymore. The cruise ship now bring so many people there you wait in long lines just to go through. Plus now you have to hike to the top (if you arrive by boat) and pay a fee to go through. While one of the most amazing and beautiful places in the BVI it is not a hard pass for me. Its unfortunate what they have done and ruined a wonderful experience.
