Group visit by CRRG Dublin motorcycle touring group
2021년 10월
Good car park beside the abbey and old Protestant church (but be careful driving in as it is located on a sharp, blind bend). Abbey is in good condition and an ancient Norman Motte is in the field beside it. Very quiet, peaceful spot.

Found by accident
2021년 9월
Beautiful ruins of a 6th Century Abbey that we found by accident driving on back roads. Parking lot was right next door to it, and access was easy.
In front there was a stone explaining the history of the Abbey in both Irish and in English.

Beautiful and Peaceful
2020년 9월 • 개인
Aghaboe is a beautiful little abbey dating from the that century. It was lovingly restored and tended to by the locals and names for such a serene and peaceful place to stop.
It has quite the history, it was founded by St. Canice in the 6th century and the "new" church dates from 1189!
Inside on the wall you'll see plaques commemorating a visit a while back by the Austrian Ambassador and representatives of the Bishop of Salzburg. Its because way back in the day, the 8th century I think, the Abbott of Aghaboe resigned to become a missionary bishop in the aforementioned Austrian city.
It's a beautiful ruin with some ornate window frames surviving as well as a stone altar and most of the walls.
Behind it is the 18th century church of Ireland which thiugh closed on my visit, the grounds are accessible and worth a stroll.
There's a big car oark beside it but no other facilities. Free to enter and open all year.
I loved it.

Activity: Explore ancient abbey
2 adults 1 child
Review: We love to explore ancient sites when ever we road trip and in an area. Aghaboe was on our list for a long time. Although a lot smaller than we envisaged we were enjoying the site alone and reading various headstones & learning the history. What ruined our experience was the sudden quick visits after we arrived from clearly 3 locals who were just popping in to check on nothing. We felt like word was out ‘strange car at abbey check them out’ . One of the ‘ inspectors’ looked like he felt quite stupid when he discovered it was a family trying to appreciate history and made some excuse of asking us to make sure we close the gate after his 2 minute spot check. We cut our visit short after this clear suspicion.
Return visit: No
Put some trust in the visitors guys.

Beautiful Abbey in Laois
2018년 9월
Hidden away in Laois this Abbey has connections to Salzburg in Austria, a one time Abbot leaving Aghaboe to take up residence there. In a field to the side are the remains of a Norman Motte and Baily. Behind the Abbey is Saint Canice's Church and if you look around the cemetery you will come across a general at rest Robert White, Knight of the Order of the Bath. A beautiful area to visit....

About time I called !

This truly is one of those “ hidden gems” off a main road and off another main road , yet close enough the the Dublin-Cork motorway .
The site is the history of Ireland in one place , with ancient saints and their relics , Viking Raiders , a thriving Centre of monastic learning , a motte and bailey , a monastery dissolved under the Reformation, a newer church built behind it and then in recent times , the ruins have been restored through the commitment of the local people !

Interesting 6th century monastic building
2016년 10월 • 친구
Whilst travelling on the R434 between Durrow and Borris in Ossory, County Laois, we came across this delightful and well restored 6th century Abbey, founded by St. Canice. Worth stopping for a short look round. Nearby to the north-west is a Standing Stone and, to the north-east a Motte & Bailey.

Great find

We stumbled across this abbey while driving from Galway to Kilkenny on holiday. Noticed it on the side of the road and decided to stop and check it out. We were the only people there but they had a very nice parking lot. They have done a great job restoring the abbey, the grounds were beautiful. Some signs there that describe it's history. Worth a stop if in the area.
