I was excited for this trip, and although numerous, the negative reviews I had read had caused me no real concern. Happily- I was right to be confident. Our trip (my wife, me and our 8yo boy) had a great time together. We were greeted instantly by a hungry deer which ate straight out of our hands (be sure to buy the animal feed). We then stomped round the main attraction, finding each stamp as we went, and enjoyed the open and relaxed atmosphere, animals and the open fires. The interactive displays are refreshingly manual and good fun (trying to get the tennis ball into the castle is a real challenge). The museum, dinosaur and haunted house elements are great also; the dinosaurs being more of a novelty than anything else. My 8yo didn't want to go round the haunted room, and I think this was a good call on his side- it was fine, but I think he was right not to go in.
All in all we had a great 2.5 hours there, and although people have moaned about the price, I don't think its easy to keep a business going these days (we all have high costs) and there is a lot to maintain here, so I was ok with it. I really recommend Mountfitchet to families. As my boy said "its like a history themed theme park", and, in the best way, it really is.

Fabulous day out at the castle. Mostly outside so best on a dry day. Many interactive displays. Also on site is a toy museum with a haunted house. Parking is in the adjacent public car park at £3 for 5 hours.

Great day out, last visited approximately 40 years ago on a school visit. It’s like a hidden gem within Essex. Daughter loved it as she has a history degree, nice to have something so good on your doorstep. Lovely animals, Staff were brilliant and plenty to eat and drink although we didn’t stay for food. Would recommend and will visit again.

The target market is families with young kids. It’s set up to wear kids out with lots of open space, some live stock and glimpse of times gone by. We didn’t feel it value for money as an adult only experience, it doesn’t take long to walk round, there are interactive displays which were a 5min bit of fun and the toy museum was full of blasts from the past, however it is aimed more for juniors.
It’s all a bit ‘let’s pretend’ and is well equipped for school trips I’m sure.
Parking is in the public, town parking area which leads straight to the entrance. Coffee & food were of good standard.

Mixed review for Mountfitchet castle on one hand it was an interesting historical recreation with lots of things to see and on another it was dated and unloved meaning that it felt over priced
I went along with my son who is neurodivergent. There was more than one occasion when he jumped at something unexpected and hung onto me. There are motion sensor voices and background noises that come out of nowhere and he found it very unsettling. Although they are useful in telling people the purpose of the different building and spaces it felt a bit dated. Notice boards, Interactive displays or even audio tours would do the same and would not have the same issue of unsettling people with noise sensitivity, it felt as though this was put in place in 80s and has never been updated. And to be honest I went on a school trip in the 80s and I might be right.
Some of the interactive displays were rough around the edges as well and had seen better days, everything felt like it needed a bit more care and thought.
The dino display was also loud and my son found it too much, he jumped at a figure when entering the toy museum and it was too busy with things crammed everywhere so we didn't stay long, heading back to the open spaces and animals in the castle itself.
With this in mind £30 for one adult and one child felt expensive and there are definitely accessibility issues above the physical ones which are very well highlighted and communicated.
It could be so much better with a bit of updating and care but we had good weather, interacting with the animals is lovely and there is lots of freedom to explore the outdoor spaces in your own time.

Absolutely lovely day out. Well worth it.
We weren’t expecting much, but we ended up spending the whole day.
Lots to see & do, take a picnic!

Visited the castle & Toy museum over Easter and absolutely loved it . Although it was raining we really enjoyed climbing the towers , exploring the castles many buildings, feeding the animals and taking loads of photos . The children loved completing the Easter egg hunt and getting their medal and prize . We also loved the toy museum which is really well laid out and so interesting . All the staff were very kind and helpful and the food and drinks in the cafe were reasonably priced . Over all we loved our day and will definitely visit again either this year or in 2025 with our 3 children

As a history teacher and parent I’m always looking for interesting historical places to take my two children. I’ve been meaning to visit Mountfitchet castle for a few years now and I’m so glad we finally did. We had a brilliant day , the staff were so friendly and the whole attraction well laid out . The gate admission is fairly priced and not expensive . Go visit this year it’s great for parents and kids alike and my husband loved the toy museum AAAA+++

I went to Mountfitchet with my 14 year old son to see a recreated, wooden, motte-and-bailey castle of the Norman period; after all it is being advertised as such in their guide-book and online: 'the reconstruction you see here today is faithful and close to the way it would have looked around 1086, twenty years after the Conquest'.
Nothing could have been further from the truth. There is no defensive palisade, but a thin wooden plank fence, which has no battlement walkway. The 'wall' boasts a variety of fanciful, rickety towers (there shouldn't be any in a motte-and-bailey) - straight from a fairy tale! The 'castle' has no keep, which would be a central part of any motte-and-bailey structure. Individual buildings (the smithy, potter's workshop, carpenter's workshop, etc.) are inexplicably tiny, poorly recreated, with displays looking dirty & tired, and in a dire need of an update (the attraction was first opened in 1985; well, it REALLY feels 1985 - and not in a good way 😁
What Mountfitchet really is, is an early-medieval theme park or playground, for very young children (CBeebies age). What you find there does not justify the price, which is way too steep (£17 adult, £13 child).
The site contains a toy museum, which despite looking tired, cluttered, and old, is actually very interesting. My son loved feeding the resident rescue deer too - which is why I gave the site two stars rather than one!
And finally... NO, there would be no bloody ALCHEMIST in a NORMAN VILLAGE! 😂😂

Came here as a child myself and wanted to bring my family as my elder likes history. The written information and displays are really interesting. I like how they’ve tried to bring it to life. My 7 year old loved feeding the roaming animals. However my 10 year old who loves a castle visit was too upset by the gory figures to enjoy the visit. She may have been too sensitive but I get her point of view, they are rather macabre. I wonder if it could be done a little more sensitively so all the family can enjoy and learn in an age- appropriate way. The hanging man in the noose placed centrally was hard to avoid, is it necessary? A noose alone would have given us the idea. Maybe better for over 12s.
