Not a great deal to see here these days as an 'attraction' other than some abandoned house ruins on the shoreline. However, it is a stunning piece of coastline and an important lesson and piece of history where as a result of the shingle beach being removed from in front of the fishing village of Hallsands, (for the first world war effort), the village was lost to the sea on 26th January 1917. If you walk the beautiful SW Coastal Path from Beesands towards Torcross you will walk right past the lost village and so you should visit the observation platform with it's detailed history of Hallsands and the events that resulted in it demise.

Health and safety concerns means that you can no longer scramble down to the village itself but there is a useful information board giving details of the disaster albeit with a few bits missing. A walk from here to Start Point Lighthouse is a must on a fine day but check opening times if you want to go inside the lighthouse.

I knew a little of the story of the lost village of Hallsands, the information boards on the viewing platform tell the story well.
Dredging of sand and gravel from close offshore for building work to enlarge the docks at Plymouth caused the beach at Hallsands to disappear, despite warnings that this would occur. There was an enquiry, but dredging resumed.
Eventually in 1917 a gale breached the sea defences causing much damage. Gradually the village was destroyed. The two remaining houses can be viewed from the viewing platform.
Our visit was part of our walk from Beesands to Start Point and back along the coast path, which was steep in parts but not too challenging.

We rented a lovely cottage right on the shore at Hallsands. Just 5 minutes walk form the Lost village at Hallsands, which was swept away in winter storms in 1917. Unfortunately, you can’t walk down to the old village now because of cliff erosion, but there is a viewing platform form which you can see the lost village. We also walked to start point light house about 40 minutes walk. It’s a beautiful walk, but you have to pay 5 pounds each to have to go into the light house, which seems a bit excessive. Our cottages is right in the beach at Hallsands with magnificent view out to sea and along the coast towards Dartmouth. It’s a shingle beach but very quite. And our two young kids could happily run around and play on their own. On the downside, it’s a slow drive, along very narrow roads to get here and to go anywhere else, but that said, it worth it when you arrived!!!

I was out on a coastal walk with a friend and he suggested we visit this site. It tells the story of how the village began and then disappeared into the sea. Very interesting.

If you want to reflect upon greed and ignorance and what happens to innocent people when those two things are combined, then this lost village is essential.
The storyboards on the viewing platform tell the whole horrible tale and give the why and how the villagers lost their homes, livelihoods and then were swindled out of rightful compensation.
There is a car park just on the edge of the village where a £2 donation is asked for. It is then a short walk to the platform.
It is in a beautiful setting and the villagers stories will haunt you.

After visiting the cricket inn at Beesands. We didn't walk but drove to this haunted place parking down a country lane as it is difficult to park. From Beesands head to the light house and you need to turn left after north Hallsands You will have to walk down a few lanes and follow the costal path there are 2 houses remaining out of the 37 once there and I believe if you want very basic accommodation , these are let. It is a lovely walk and the platform from where you view the ruins , is informative. Our 11 and 14 year old were interested
It really is worth a visit if only for the Polldark experience

We walked from Slapton Sands to Hallsands along the coast, about an hour in each direction. Viewing the ruined remains of the village from the platform there is a helpful timeline to tell the story of how the village was gradually claimed by the sea and ultimately lost in one night at the start of the 20th Century. There are no refreshment places at Hallsands but a good place at Beesands about 20 minutes walk away.

Free car park, clean public toilets, play area for children, coffee and cake in the church hall no charge only a donation to charity, that's Beesands. Then a cliff top walk over to Hallsands to see the houses that were washed into the sea. After which a very kind lady from the church hall came to pick us up and drove us back to our car at Beesands, and she refused any payment, so we made a donation to her charity. Well worth a visit.

We walked from Beesands to Hallsands along the cliff path - an easy enough walk if you are used to walking. Hallsands is now viewed from a platform (as a young girl I can remember visiting the village and walking round the houses). There is a very interesting and sad timeline information area on the platform. To think that we do not seem to learn from past mistakes is sad - the village disappeared into the sea due to dredging offshore for the expansion of Plymouth docks; a similar thing is now happening in Poole harbour and local villages suffer flooding. Hallsands is worth a visit if you are in the area.
