We attended a half day spun sugar workshop and had an excellent time. My husband was a bit reluctant at first, but really enjoyed it. Jim was great, explaining everything clearly but also with humour. We managed to make everything planned and although we could not take them with us (we were not going home that day), were pleased to see that the sugar was going to be recycled.

A great morning that I thoroughly recommend.

I attended the Exeter Cookery School for the one day Dinner Party Dessert Course.
Arriving early, I was greeted by Jim, Lucy and Jazzy and hot coffee. They have created a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere that immediately puts you at ease. Jim is an engaging expert chef and an encyclopedia of knowledge. No question is too silly and processes are explained with patience and humour. It is a very hands on experience. Jim is always nearby to advise. Ingredients and how they affect each other are covered as you progress. Tricks of the trade "peppered" the tutorials. The results even for less confident cooks are very reassuring. The whole day flew by with much laughter and banter Interrupted by an excellent lunch and coffee. Anybody who wishes to learn the basics or enhance their current skills will find all they need here. The only problem is choosing which course to take next amongst a staggering range of subjects. The final joy is that Anthony is available to clear and wash up all the debris from your efforts. Top marks to Jim and Lucy for hitting the spot in taking away the fear and mystic of cooking, assisted by Jazzy adding further insight along the way. Bring it on! See you all soon. Cliff

Truly excellent! I have received a one-day fish course for Xmas and I was looking forward to attending it. Nevertheless, I had a tough week plus a sleepless night and reluctantly went for the pre-booked course. What a wise decision as I almost missed on a really amazing day. Great venue, great head chef and tutor; and most importantly stunning food that you prepare yourself from scratch. I'll be visiting again, however, I need to make sure to book again a day-long course as half-day might be too short. The only question is which one as the selection is vast. Anyway, I have to cook fish now. Thanks, Jim et al.! You guys are really great!
btw, this is my first ever review as I never felt to write one for any other place. This place changed it all...

Exeter Cookery School hosted us for a great team away day, where we cooked and ate a delicious two-course meal. Jim and Jazzy were wonderful teachers and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves - so much so, that one of us immediately booked another course! The cook-and-dine option is a well-paced and enjoyable activity for any level of cooking ability.

Excellent ! On arrival we were greeted and offered fresh tea or coffee until the group was complete. The usual H& S brief - given with humour and then down to the tasks.

We were taught how to use a (sharp) knife and how to use it. Prepping for the cooking and then a good level of supervision and guidance for us all to ensure we got the process right.

Much good humoured banter with good advice. Then we ate the fruits of our labour (we all thought we had done well - clean plates!!)
No clock watching - we over ran by an hour. No washing up or having the stay to clean the workstation (many thanks to the "Cinderella's"

Great fun, good cooking - and I learnt a lot.

Visited today on the half day fish course. I had been brought a voucher for Christmas and on belatedly got round to using it - I wish I had sooner!! The course exceeded all expectations and I was amazed how nice the two bits of fish (sea bass and plaice) I cooked in the session were. I had thought the course couldnt be that much difference than thoroughly reading a recipe book but the tricks and advice by the mentor were excellent and I will be making these dishes for all visitors for months!

Jim and Lucy and their team have created a wonderful facility on Exeter's quay right next to the river. I have been on two of their courses now and realise how much I didn't know about cooking. Everything is explained so well and it is great to watch and then get 'hands on' to attempt to do the same. I am feeling quite inspired to cook more and learn more. It is great fun and I am definitely going back again.

I’ve just spent a lovely day learning how to make bread here with hosts Jim and Lucy. Jim is an excellent and knowledgable chef and teacher - he explains not only how to do things, but why, and the science behind the method. The day was fun, the lunch was tasty and we all left armed with delicious breads and the knowledge to continue at home. Big thanks to Anthony who did all the washing up! I’ll certainly go back there to learn another cookery skill and I’d thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn or improve their cooking.

I have been on two of the courses, the fish prep and desserts and cake making courses and I thoroughly enjoyed both days.

On the fish prep we learnt different methods of cooking both the round and flat fish as well as learning how to fillet and identify a fresh fish which I found useful and have used the methods learnt since my attendance. Jim is a charismatic character and showed patience, especially with my fear of knives. I would definitely recommend this one day course. The great thing is you get to eat everything you make which is an added bonus.

Yesterday I attended the cake and dessert making course which was a brilliant day and there was so much packed into it. We made banana loaf, fruit cake, chocolate fondants, and custard tarts where we made the custard and the shortcrust pastry. Daisy taught the course and she was very engaging, warm and friendly and was very knowledgeable having previously run an award winning tea room. Lunch provided was delicious and we were made plenty of tea and coffee throughout the day on both courses.

I just want to mention Lucy...she is lovely and even remembered me from my last visit which was earlier in the year....Jim and Lucy should be proud of what they have achieved in only 3-4 years. It’s a beautiful setting by the river and I would highly recommend it if you are interested in cooking.

Thanks for 2 brilliant days.
