My wife and I have just spent a week on the K & A. Our boat was from Cruise England (White Horse Narrowboats) out of Burbage Wharf. The boat was excellent. Very comfortable. The Kennet & Avon Canal was scenic but the banks were terribly overgrown and any decent moorings, near a pub or near a bridge, were already taken by ‘live a boarders’. The CRT really need to decide whether the canal system is a leisure facility for the general public or a base for people who would rather live off grid. A good many of the moored boats were in a shocking state and had licences displayed that had expired, in some cases years ago. We went on the Llangollen Canal a few years ago and that was a much more pleasant canal (although a lot busier).

Cycling from Devizes towards Bath past the absolutely incredible Caen Hill locks. Some eateries along the way such as Caen Hill cafe for an ice cream or such like and 5 mikes down to Seend is the superb Barge Inn serving excellent food at good prices with the garden service to match.
A few weeks ago we cycled the canal from Bath towards Seend, can recommend as the tow paths are pretty well looked after and safe.

This canal was very important in the 18's.
These days, it's used by the very many canal boat users.

It was no holiday hard work lost a lot of time on stoppages broken lock gates and paddle's all looks like poorly maintained when it came to going up caen hill flight that didn't open we'll ten am what's wrong with 8 am just lot of time wasted and in the hot sunshine don't need that. needs some one to sort out back pumps crofton on lot of money spent still working and the caen hill pump looks like the amount of vans at the pumping station beggars believe came back British waterways' it looks like we that use the k@a are all on borrowed time BUT remember it will take longer than you think.

A pleasant walk along the canal, not too busy once of of the city centre, quite peaceful further out. Very scenic area with plenty of bird life. Paths were well maintained with a few benches along the route.

Il Kennet è il piccolo fiume di Reading, che proprio in questa città, nemmeno lontano dal centro, sfocia nel Tamigi.
Riverside piuttosto carino, con presenza di numerosi uccelli, piacevole passeggiare cosi' come fermarsi in uno dei locali affacciati sulle sue rive nella zona pedonale.

No moorings, no water, too many static boats, overgrown (not rewilding!), too many widebeam boats, a lot of sadly neglected boats, poorly maintained in places.
What a shame because a lot people put a lot of time, energy and money into restoring this absolutely beautiful canal. It has everything; a stunning flight of locks, a tunnel, well spaced out locks, walks and nature reserves, beautiful villages and towns, great pubs and cafe's. Please don't let it go to rack and ruin. It's a treasure.

Walked and cycled a few sections of this now over the years, most recently from Honey Street near Pewsey - great views of hills and countryside, and a lovely asset.

If you would like canal trip through the centre of reading, can I suggest you book on the Matilda Too.
It’s a 45 minute boat trip along the canal but it is packed with very interesting views of reading which will surprise you, the crew are helpful and knowledgable of the route and I found it both enjoyable and educational, it was a perfect sunny day experience.
Thanks to the volunteers who operate this trip, top marks.

Restful walk back to the car along side the Kennet & Avon Canal in Newbury.
Well maintained waterway from days gone by!
Lots of swans out for a swim & feed on the canal - stunning mother nature at her best!

We would like to walk the Kennet Avon canal from Bath to Newbury. Any idea how long this will take and places to stay on the way? Thanks

If you are walking you can stay on the canal for the whole way.
Some of the path is narrow and simply a grass track.
From Bath to Devizes you will be sharing the path with cyclists.
As far as how long it will take depends on far you walk and how far your accommodation is from the canal.

I would like to hire a bike for 3 days in early May as I am hoping to cycle the reading to Bath canal path.
Can you give me any advise on where I could hire a bike.
