While on a circular walk from Salisbury we passed Old Sarum. On this occasion we decided not to visit the main castle, which is looked after by English Heritage, but just wandered around the outside and through the ruins of the Cathedral which had ben demolished in the 1200 when the original building had been moved, and had move to and become Salisbury Cathedral. From outside you can see how commanding a position the castle had over the surrounding area. Certainly worth a visit if in the area.

One of the most impressive iron age hill forts I've ever seen. Huge ramparts, large area, and then added interest with ruins of a medieval castle ruin and site of a lost original cathedral.

Costs far too much to get in. Bunch of flint stone walls with information boards at a few points that you cannot get to read because they are swamped by mud. Torrential rain then came down and no where to shelter. I want at least half my money back!

Ieri ho visitato Salisbury e dintorni. Nel locale ufficio del turismo mi hanno suggerito di acquistare un biglietto cumulativo che comprende varie attrazioni, tra cui Old Sarum e i relativi spostamenti in pullman. A Old Sarum sorgeva anticamente la città e ne rimangono oggi i ruderi di un castello medioevale e qualche altra rovina nell'area più in basso. Interessante per gli archeologi ma bello tout court per lo splendido paesaggio di cui si gode dall'alto della cittadella fortificata.

We visited on a wet and windy day and unfortunately the visibility was poor so we could not appreciate the views. the site could be improved for visitors - charges high as there is not only an entrance fee but a car park fee too (not sure how most people would arrive if not by car!) The signage is difficult to read when the ground in front of every sign has sunk with wear and therefore full of muddy water. Expensive for a visit and maybe should consider cheaper rate out of spring / summer season.

It felt important to visit this site to see where Salisbury started. You can see the remains of the castle and the outline of the cathedral. Not a huge amount to see but it has atmosphere.

We visited here after visiting Salisbury Cathedral and the two dovetail well. As a member of English Heritage we got in for free which was a help.

Fantastic morning. Really good information boards all around the site which were clear and well maintained (we saw a staff member cleaning every one of them first thing) We took our dog who had a fabulous time running around outside the main castle. But what really made our visit were the staff. We went on 29th Sept (first people in, so 9.45/10am) and everyone we spoke to were friendly, knowledgeable and just a delight to chat to. Highly recommend this place. Great views too!

if you just want to see the ruins maybe 90 mins or so depending if you walk the surrounds. why not add in a picnic or visit the pub avross tne road. If you're trying to cram, combine with stonehenge and Salisbury city. Enjoy
