Despite the sheer number of friars whose bones are represented here, my husband and I were relatively underwhelmed. The bones are arranged very creatively, and are more or less cataloged and arranged by specific bone types.
It was macabre, but not extremely gross, and it definitely made you think about those who did the actual crafting, as well as those who donated their parts to the cause. Overall, the facility is small, but the cost was not much.
I am not a deeply religious person, so this may have more impact on someone who is. Be aware that this IS a religious site and the usual covering of shoulders and knees is required. Make sure your headphones work …mine didn’t work well, but enough to get the gist of it all.

Wow we had Heather an Airbnb guide and she was absolutely terrific. She was very knowledgeable, had amazing energy and very cute "dad" jokes. She accurately described the Crypt as either somethign you will love or hate just because its such an oddity. We loved it and although creepy and would recommend it to everyone. We have done all the big things in Rome so this was a fun off the beaten track but worth a visit.

I remember many years ago that my Father Silvano restored the museum-ossuary of the Capuchins, I spent weeks here, I remember peace and never a negative atmosphere, however bizarre the idea, never left me with bad thoughts, art and life and then there is death, everything transforms. To see.

One of the strangest things I've ever seen but more than worth it.Our tour guide Alain was very knowledgeable, very helpful and had a sense of humour which kept you entertained even during the bus ride.My daughter and I loved it even though I wasn't convinced I wanted to go at first.

Worth a visit and every penny!
The audio guide was animated and engaging. I learnt a lot! The crypt was breathtaking, really worth a visit.
Also a lovely escape from Rome’s intense heat!

So much to unpack at this amazing location. Let’s start with the museum.
The museum is small but mighty. It tells the story of the creation of the order and the life of the Capuchin saints and everyday life of the friars. The exhibits are nicely layed out with explanatory labels. The quality of the objects was exceptional. There is also a beautiful paining,“St. Francis in Meditation”, by Italian artist Caravaggio. If you are interested in religious iconography you will enjoy this museum. If iconography is not your thing you will leave with an understanding of the Capuchin Friars and it will also help put the crypt in context.
One last thing about the museum…..you will find stories there, not just the gold and opulent side of the church. But it tells the stories of the lives of these friars, what their life was like and how it continues. This is something you will not find in any other “church” location you will visit in Rome.
Ok, now on to the “famous” crypt.
Looking strictly at the unusual and oddities angle, well it is off of the charts. There are remains of over 3,000 Capuchin friars (and perhaps some non-friars) stacked and poised in five rooms (you will encounter six rooms but one does not contain bones) along a corridor. Some of the rooms are named for the type of bones used in the “decorations”, such as Crypt of the Skulls, Crypt of the Pelvises, Crypt of the Leg Bones and Thigh Bones, and the Crypt of the Three Skeletons. You will be surrounded by bones that have been crafted into incredible pieces of art and practical items (look up at the chandeliers). It shows creativity and imagination in utilizing the mortal remains of their fellow friars.
Looking from a religious point of view, well it is also off of the charts! Each room is filled with messages for the living, the most prominent is “life is fleeting”. Look for the images of “time flies” (hour glass with wings-I will let you determine the bones used), the crossed arms of brotherhood (quite literally), and the “grim reaper”.
Skeletons are posed in prayer and contemplation. These men devoted their lives to the church and their bones continue to show their devotion to what they believed. When you approach it from that standpoint, it is incredibly touching.
There is debate on why the remains were used in this way as opposed to buried. No matter the reason please be respectful and follow the rules when visiting the crypt. No photos…don’t even sneak one. There are already photos all over the internet and postcards in the small store if you really want a photo. No bare shoulders or knees. It is warm in the corridor but again it is their rule and a matter of respect.
Some practical information….
You need a timed-entry ticket to visit the museum and crypt. You can go through the museum on your own but as part of the ticket you will receive an audio guide which you really need for the crypt. There are also companies that offer guided tours. You can purchase online or in person, book online and in advance to get the date and time you want.
Large backpacks are not permitted.
No food.
Again, no photos
No bare shoulders or knees
You can have a bottle of water but no other beverages or food
The crypt corridor is narrow, is warm, and no air movement. If you are not used to heat I recommend that you bring a small folding hand fan. That is actually something you should have anywhere you go in Rome as it can get very hot and stifling especially in buildings that do not have air conditioning or inefficient air conditioning.
Bottom line….do not miss the museum or crypt. Look beyond the bones. The experience will stay with you.

An interesting experience. Get tickets from original website and they have an audio tour provided. We went at opening and it wasn’t packed. We could have bought tickets there. The entire museum is no photos. I understand the no photos in the crypt but wish there was a place to take photos so we could remember going there.

The crypts themselves are very interesting if perhaps a little garish. My only problems are with the attitude of the staff at reception and the ongoing misogyny of the Catholic church.
Let's start with the blatant institutional misogyny. At this venue women are made to cover their shoulders while men parade around with ballcaps on their heads, wearing beer slogan embossed tee-shirts and short-shorts. I have no problem with an appropriate dress-code and the 1 Euro shall was not a problem, but the disproportional application of decency rules to women is pretty sad to see in the modern world.
As for staff attitude. This venue, the only one run by the Catholic church that required a fee to enter and that we visited on this vacation, was the only venue that demanded that my clearly disabled wife prove her disability. All of the other venues accepted her two canes, her difficulty walking, and her built-up shoe as sufficient but she had to advocate for herself and point out the absurdity of demanding a disability card from a clearly disabled individual tourist. It seemed that the representative was more interested in revenue than in compassion and charity.

Visit lasting approximately one hour with an audio guide in the museum, ending in the crypt, what a surprising place.
Photos are prohibited in the crypt.
A must-see visit when visiting Rome over several days.

Grazie

Hi,
arriving in early june 2019.
how do i buy tickets for this place / should i buy in advance or is it possible to buy on spot at the same day?
2019년 5월 27일 작성
I just arrived and paid at the door. No queue's in April, and we were there just after Easter.
2019년 8월 4일 작성
Is this crowded in June? I can't find a way to make reservations on the web site. How long are the lines in summer? Thanks!
2019년 4월 11일 작성
You can book this tour on Viator and print from home, even though you may use the app, you may not have cell service, so I highly recommend printing from home before you leave. It will give you directions on where to meet the tour. I book all of our tours on Viator and we have never had any issues and have always had a wonderful guide. June is a hot time in Rome, so it is a nice cool break to go down into the crypts.

Is there parking? Can I drive to this location and park?

Hi, Is the only way to visit this is by going there and buying an entry ticket in person? Anyone remember the costs of add-ons like audio guides? Was there a wait, and was it easy to access? Thanks in advance.
2018년 4월 5일 작성
You don’t need to book in advance - no queues, this is a reasonably less well known museum. I cannot recall if there’s audio guide.
2018년 4월 10일 작성
can anyone tell me if this is open tomorrow (easter sunday)? if so the times
2018년 3월 31일 작성
Hmm - gut feeling is no, after all Rome is probably one of the most religious places on earth!
If you’re staying at a hotel, I’d ask the concierge to check for you.
