We had a very negative experience right off the bay with the woman selling tickets. Didn’t want to break a 20, didn’t smile or act pleasant in anyway. You’d think she was being paid to keep guests out. The museum itself was small but interesting. Don’t plan more than 39 minutes there.

A great museum in the old town of Faro, Portugal. We were there on a Sunday and admission was free.
Various exhibitions were open. It is very nice when art and historical buildings are used together like this. The building is, however, quite run down in some places and should be renovated. There were a few visitors but it wasn't too crowded. The staff were very reserved in the background. If you visit Faro you should definitely make a detour to the Municipal Museum of Faro.

I consider that the best thing about the museum is the building itself, with its rectangular shape and an internal garden that provides a very pleasant place to be. I found the expositions to be weak.

Just a "brief overview" of the history of the Algarve area (specifically in regards to its "archaeology & art") is what this museum offers on its "2 levels" with just about two moderate-sized rooms on each level (so yes just brief amounts of time needed to go through all those rooms each with a fairly limited quantity of items on display). But having said that, to see in those not-too-many displays is quite an impressive "historical timeline" especially among those seen on the first level (the level for archaeology) dating back to about the Roman time including the "notable displays" in my opinion of some busts of Roman emperors, a full-sized human skeleton under a glass floor & an "elaborate-designed mosaic" which covers some sizeable area of the floor in one room; and not as much far back in time as on the first level but still going back to about the time of Renaissance I would say are the displays on the second level (the level for art) many of which are these sizeable & colorful paintings of "religion-themed" scenes, and actually there was also at the time (not sure if it was a temporary exhibit) a room full of works portraying some "nature & social" scenes by some artist from just about a hundred years ago (and who was likely a local artist from this area). And yes, apart from the display rooms of this museum is also its fair-sized "inner courtyard" with some hedge rows arranged in squares & rectangles (for some nice photo-ops I would say from the "corridors around" on both levels and where also to see along those corridors are a number of "earth pots" & "stone plates" with inscriptions likely of the royal coat-of-arms).

Located at the "old town" area of the city, also just in the vicinity of this place are: the Faro Cathedral with like an L-shaped square around it (more impressed by the beautiful heritage buildings around the square than the cathedral itself which in any case was "closed for entry" likely due to being weekend); the "town wall" with really no visible sign of decay & damage I would say despite its centuries-old age; and two outdoor "drawings-on-tiles" depicting some scenes from the medieval time around the 1200's (both of which actually right beside the "town wall" and not far from one another although I kind of wonder if those two drawings have always existed on those same spots through all those centuries!). And yes, also not too far from this museum (but located outside the "old town") is the "beautiful area" around the city's marina with: some "impressive number" of boats in the marina; a fish-headed mermaid statue & a 'love (heart) Faro' sign right beside the marina; a small vertical monument at the road intersection near the marina; and also some streets lined with various shops & restaurants (for my breakfast before entering the "old town" and for some nice "Faro souvenirs" before heading back to my place on the oceanfront at the end of the day).

Small museum but interesting. Lovely old Convent to stroll around and browse the ancient Roman exhibits and the Moorish influence on this part of Portugal. Also….it’s free.

This small museum is set in the beautiful surroundings of a 16th century convent and is a large part of the appeal. On two floors with rooms off the central courtyard you will find a collection of items from the local area dating back to Roman times.

A couple of the rooms look to have temporary displays which change from time to time, when we were there they were art orientated.

You could probably get round here in an hour but allow a little bit more to be on the safe side as its well worth a visit.

This municipal museum is one of the best city museums in Europe. The exhibits are wonderful. We were here a few years ago and there is always something new to see. This time there were three exhibits which were marvelous, all about Portuguese art and artists (1) Do Sotao: Artadentro 20 Anos (2) Isolindo Vaz: A Different Man and (3) Joaquim Antonio Viegas: The Construction of a Scenographer. Even if you are not familiar with Portuguese artists you will enjoy the visual art and descriptions of the lives of these artists. All exhibits are in Portuguese and English.

If you visit Faro, this is worth seeing and the admission fee is very reasonable

Enjoyable and informative museum, ranging from Roman finds to exhibitions of well-known Portuguese artists. A pleasant place to while away an hour or two. If it is sunny, it is also peaceful to sit along the old cloister area and watch the storks nesting on the rooftop. The building itself is architecturally beautiful (a former convent). Several days a week there is also the option of buying a ticket to a lovely performance of Fado singing.
