Beautiful guided tour to and on the Haugabreen glacier. About 6 hours in total, from start and end at the parking lot in Skei. More than an hour on the glacier. The walk is not difficult, but experience with hiking in the mountains and/or a good level of fitness are useful.
+ Excellent guide (Gustav). He continuously kept a close eye on whether everyone could come along. Safety came first.
+ Very correct handling by the office.
+ Good value for money
- Nothing

We had a really great tour with guid Martha. The group was small and the guide adjusted the tour according to everyones fitness. The tour was friendly and not at all too touristic or mass production. Would highly recommend taking this glacier walk and enjoying the nice and genuine people and beautiful surroundings.

By far the most beautiful hike in the area. The path is marked with red paint on stones. This hike brings you to the foot of the glacier. You can litteraly touch it! But be warned, this hike contains a difficult part at the end. Almost rock climbing as the path is hard to find in the end. You will cross rivers/water, there are stones laid out to step on. Wouldnt recommand doing this hike in rainy weather, because even now after a week of no rain there where slippery parts on the way. Make sure you bring proper clothes, shoes and food and water with you. There is a very dirty out house kind of toilet at the beginning of the small parking area.
The road to the small parking lot asks for you to leave 50 nok cash in a wooden box near the road and fill in a paper with information to leave in your car. Pay attention the road is not accesable for campervans. But all together , a beautiful hike in rough nature with the most beautiful views and a big glacier at the end! With no massive crowds in your view. You can take amazing photos. We were almost alone, totally insane this is not a crowded hike. We almost couldn't believe we are in europe doing this hike. Felt like walking in new zealand/patagonia/canada at some times. The hike took us 4 hours and 6,65km in total (including lunch and taking lots of pictures), keep in mind we are fit and young.

My fiance and I booked a tour with Breogfjell Mountain Guides to go hike the Haugabreen Glacier. They met us at our hotel (the only one really in town, the Thon Jolster) to pick us up. Apparently, there was a problem with the normal group van so we ended up driving ourselves to the hike start (only 20 min). It was a somewhat narrow/windy road, like most of the roads in Norway!

We were a group of 4 total plus the guide. Our guide told us he doesn't see a lot of Americans on the hike so we were happy to have found something off-the-beaten-path!! Our guide paid the car fee at a little unmanned toll booth before the parking lot and we put a pass on our car window. There are spots for 10-15 cars.

Before the hike start, there is a hole-toilet and a picnic table. The hike to the glacier is approx 2.5k, starting with about 30 min of relatively flat trails that cross some streams, then a rock scramble that was quite steep. We had to cross a waterfall in some places - I was glad to have a guide as the signs were not very clear and it would have been hard to find the best parts of the trail to cross the water.

We arrived at the glacier, had a quick lunch, and then geared up (put on our crampons and got harnessed up.) It was a bit scary (for me...not my fiance) to walk up a glacier but I learned to trust my crampons. Our guide tailored the trip to the skill level of the group and offered us several opportunities to go through tunnels, one blue ice cave, and some other "fun routes." The glacier changes daily so you never know what elements you are going to see. This is not one of those places where everyone has the same Instagram photo!! We spent about 2h playing on the glacier.

You definitely need layers and gloves and waterproof shoes (boots). We got lucky with the weather but still ranged from needing a light jacket to a full winter jacket/windbreaker. I was grateful for my headwrap to warm my ears. I skip the "boots" mandate on most hikes but on this one, I was actually glad to have the waterproof on multiple occasions. Lots of mud and water. And you need gloves to hold the ice picks or you will get scraped up (like my stubborn fiance!)

All-in, we met at 9a and got back to the hotel around 5:30p. We were driving to Hardanger that evening and wished we gave ourselves a night at the hotel to relax after! We thought this would be an easy day but it was not! You use a lot of muscles on the glacier. Really cool experience though. Highly recommend this tour company!!

The trip is a demandimg one and can be downright dangerous in rainy/sleek weather due to loose, wet or even frozen rocks. Loose and falling rocks can also occur. Check the weather forecast before going.

The path is pretty badly marked and you can risk drifting from the path on your way back, especially since the path marks are mostly visible as you ascent, but not as you descent. Since there's a lot of water from the melting glacier, waterproof clothing and shoes is highly indicated.

The toilet at the end of the toll road is out of order due to the hut being collapsed.

The views at the glacier were incredible, but we didn't dare getting too close, especially in the summer period, when everything is melting.

We were traveling independently and did not use an outfitter or guide. We had read this was a glacier that you could approach safely without technical gear and wanted to see it up close.

The access road to the glacier is a 50 NOK toll road (pay in cash or coins at the box at base of road) and is gravel, fairly steep, but in good repair. We were driving a VW Golf and had no problem driving up even in the rain. At the parking lot there is a toilet and map.

It was early July and about 7c at the lot and light rain was falling. The trail is well marked with red painted rocks, and goes from rolling hills crossing small streams to being fairly steep and rocky as you scramble up the boulders along the moraines. It is a challenging hike in the rain since the streams rise a bit, parts of the lower trail become soggy, and many of the rocks on the upper trail are quite smooth from glacial polishing so can be slippery when wet. The trail follows streams (and eventually a rolling waterfall) from the meltwater.

By the time we got to the top of the ridge and close to the glacier, our clothing was getting pretty wet and we were in a sleet/snow storm with moderately gusting winds. Who would have guessed that we'd get snow in July! Since we were with our 8 and 10 year old kids and didn't want to risk slipping or anyone getting hypothermia, we turned back before doing the final 500 meters or so the reach the glacier. We did manage to sneak a view of it through the sleet...LOVELY!!!

If the kids were older, we had warmer clothes, or the weather had been drier we would have undoubtably made it to the glacier, sigh...next time I guess.
