This is a stunning place, that I have visited over the years with my family, both by walking and by kayaking from Cassis. It can only be reached with some effort, which seems to be a problem to some reviewers, However, it is definitely worth that effort and it’s also important to recognise that this remarkable piece of wilderness is protected somewhat by being less accessible. There is a lot to see along the way too, particularly if you take in the slightly longer coastal route between Port Pin and En Vau, which offers great views of the Calanque from high above.
You CAN get closer on a mountain bike but have to park up about a kilometre away, and powered craft can only go a certain distance into the Calanque so the tourist boats don’t really get anywhere near the same experience.
Its enjoyment can be influenced by the timing of your visit to some extent, as it gets very crowded during peak holiday times and in the middle of the day. Also it gets the best of the sun in the morning, so all in all get there early to avoid both the crowds and the shade.
It is an awesome place to swim and swimming on your back is my recommendation, as that offers the best views!

The place and the sea are magnificent, scenically really a sight.
But there is the downside, which is crowding. Especially in high season the best way to enjoy it is to start very early the short trek (1h30’) from Cassis, so you will be able to avoid the huge crowd that forms on the path and in the beach starting from late morning.
Arriving early (7/7:30) you will also be able to park comfortably on Avenue Notre Dame, the most convenient way to trek, at a cost of 1€/hour.

A lot of effort but what a comfort to discover this cove!!!
Attention difficult access to some places and you must love walking.
I advise you to go outside the usual hours. We arrived at the site around 6:30 pm and there was hardly anyone in the middle of July!

I put the score 3/5 only because this hike was much more difficult than what we were told at the Marseille tourist office.
Not being very athletic, it was very physically demanding.
Apart from that (with hindsight I smile), the landscapes are beautiful and finally I do not regret going out of my comfort zone.
A tip: plan enough water and something to eat.
I cannot thank enough the group from Switzerland (two educators and teenagers) who gave us their water and allowed us to follow them otherwise my daughter and I would have gotten lost.

Hiking the three creeks from Cassis is a once in a lifetime event. It is beautiful but physical. Elevation differences are important. It goes up, it goes down. There is no shortage of views.

The Calanque d’en Vau is the most beautiful cove around Cassis. It has sublime and unique turquoise water.
The hike to get there is breathtaking.
WARNING⚠️⚠️⚠️ to access it you have to walk at least 3 hours in the middle of the caniar. Don’t forget your cap and glasses to avoid sunstroke and to stay stable on steep paths!
With young children, avoid!!!
Indeed, this hike is quite difficult I found, especially the climb back up.
I recommend going there in May, as we did, to have a little fresh air and fewer people.
Hike to do early in the morning around 8 a.m., to avoid the crowds of tourists and enjoy nature!
Here are my tips, and enjoy this beautiful hike and cove 🏖️

We left from the Jolie Bois car park, a pleasant and well-signposted hike, several choices of paths, 1h30 outward and 1h30 return with a few small breaks on the way back. The water is very cold and there are a lot of people all the time, little shade.

Took this hike from Cassis through two other Calanques namely Port Moeu and Port Pin. The journey up the limestone formations are arduous and challenging.but once you reach the top it's worth every drop of your sweat. Must do if one's around Marseille, only undertake the hike if in good physical shape.

Very cool, especially if you have appropriate shoes (for trails) and good knees. Cardio is important, but those who enjoy this type of outing generally have reasonable physical fitness.
Loose rocks and slippery sections - but I only fell once, thanks to the bike gloves that helped to hold on to the rocks and branches, as the sneakers were not suitable.
I do not recommend taking children or the elderly, because if there is an accident, carrying them up or down a hill is almost impossible and there is practically no Internet access on the route.

Has anyone been there recently since things have opened up after COVID boarder closures in FR? Is it less crowded theses days? We live in EU and are headed to South of France soon

Bonjour

Hello i am thinking of visiting the Calanque this summer with my family and would like to get a boat to take us around, we have small children and would be easier and faster with boat. Does anyone have any recommendations? Should i just go to the harbor and get a boat there for the day? or if you have used someone in the past could you send me some info? thanks.

Hey Belén, I definitely recommend renting a boat. This can t be done once in The Calanque, it has to be rented from Cassis and I would definitely take a boat since the path is somewhat dangerous for toddlers/ small kids.

Hi,
I am thinking of taking public transport then hike there. Do you know which one is the closest, and will the hike from the station be manageable?
Thank you
