We had no expectations when we arrived at the mill, but what an excellent attraction this is!! We went on a non production day so the mill was not fully working, but we saw all the machine operate as we followed a school party around. Lovely café, who asked for our comments on the audio tour and the attraction itself, and listened to the very limited things we suggested. We would DEFINATELY go again if we are in the area. And we look out for the Steam days!!

The Grist Cafe and Bar

This is a review for the cafe, which is not searchable.

We were so delighted that the mill cafe has opened again, as we have missed it, especially on the weekend when we were able to meet with friends. Not that you would know this as there is no advertising either at the Mill itself, it’s website, the Spotlight magazine or indeed a website for the cafe (as there doesn’t appear to be one).
Needless to say a lot of work has taken place to provide great outdoor seating, with parasols and well tended gardens. The bakery products served were of an excellent quality, Bakesmiths from Bristol are apparently the supplier and the cinnamon bun was superb.
As soon as the cafe is open at the weekends we hope to visit as a couple, when we also hope there will be brunch options available, perhaps on a similar line to the menu at The White Post Cafe, Langford Budville.
My son from London suggested that rather than preclude people from parking in the car park (unless they are visiting the site) that they are actively encouraged to park to go for a walk so that they are more likely to visit the cafe for refreshments afterwards, with perhaps a token being paid for and redeemed once a purchase is made.
I am sure these are all teething problems as they are certainly on the right track with great food and pleasant and helpful staff. We shall look forward to visiting again in the very near future.

Thank you so much for your review - and I am glad you enjoyed the Café! We will take on board all of your comments, and do have plans for more advertising and promoting for the Café, Shop and Site as a whole - We are a small team and have been focussed recently on getting to grips with welcoming people back with new staff who were not here pre-pandemic! Now that we are open and things are running smoothly we will be turning focus towards getting our name out there more - and making the experience even better. We do hope you come back and visit again and hopefully you will see more of our promotion out and about very soon. Thank you!

Thank you for your feedback, our apologies you were unable to visit, the mill didn't produce any flyers this year i am sorry to say, I suspect it has come from elsewhere, our website has our latest opening times on it, along with discounts and offers, we are open for our Steam Days in December and January.

Together with 18 others on a wonderfully sunny, but chilly, day had a conducted tour, which was excellent if you like seeing and hearing about our industrial past. Lots of fascinating machinery to see and be demonstrated, taking about an hour. As this was a steam day, we were then able to see everything being driven from the boiler, this however involved not only our group, but many others, as a result couldn’t see or hear properly from the back of a large crowd. So I wandered off and looked around on my own. Found the WW2 air raid shelter with lots of fascinating posters, including one giving instructions on using the toilet 🤔. We were also able to see many working model steam engines in absolutely pristine condition.
There is a small cafe and one is able to get around using a mobility scooter, although some of the surfaces (gravel in car park) could be improved and co operation from the group giving enough room to manoeuvre helps 😊
A very interesting way to spend at least a couple of hours.

I wasn't bothered about visiting this attraction as I had preconceived ideas - how wrong of me. it was included in our 5 day holiday with Shearings so thought I would go for the ride.

It is a very old building but easy to navigate as there is a lift which easily holds 6 people.

There is still outisde work going on around the parking area, cutting and burning trees etc. so there was very strong woodsmoke around when we visited, however inside the mill all was much better.

We have a guide who was obviously passionate about the history of mills. Not only did he shown and explain all the different stages from the sheep's wool to the finished material. All the machinery was still in order and he switched some of them on so we could briefly hear the noise they made - deafening in some cases.

He explained how the mill women and small children had to work at the machinery 12 hours a day, only to leave for a comfort break. The younger children would bring their food to them so they didn't have to stop work and therefore lose money.

There is a nice little tea room on site with a limited menu. No hot food but delicious cakes and good quality crisps. We had a slice of carrot cake, a slice of flapjack and 2 lattes which came to £10.80.

It is quite dark inside and you really need flat shoes to walk round comfortably.

There are toilets at the back of the site, very clean, there are also some in the cafe.

The car park is uneven, not tarmac, another reason for flat shoes.

We visited on a mid August Saturday morning and were first in. It was very quiet but all the exhibits were well signed with informative text and samples of wool in various stages of the process. We also learned about the harsh working conditions of the men and women who worked there including many children from the age of six!

Towards the end of our visit one of the staff took the trouble to come and find us to demonstrate one of the working weaving machines. Our many questions were enthusiastically answered and we learned so much more about the method of weaving and the people who used to work with them than we would have done without his demo.

Our next stop was the Mill Cafe where we enjoyed coffee and an excellent Victoria sponge in the outside seating area. All to the sounds of the rushing waters of the mill race. We were well looked after by the friendly cafe staff.

A great visit highly recommended.

The web site states, “Today the rich heritage lives on as one of the finest working wool museums where visitors are not just able to relive the sights and sounds of the industrial revolution but also see crafts men and women making traditional textiles, beautiful knitting yarn and hand woven rugs.”

We found it very interesting, but there was nothing happening at all. It certainly wasn’t a working museum, a very static one when we were there. There was the tempting sound of a loom operating, but that was in a part of the building we were not allowed in to.

There was nobody at all to talk to in the museum, you were just left to read boards that didn’t make too much sense if you weren’t in the industry. I had to come away knowing how some of these amazing machines worked. Unfortunately I am none the wiser.

We travelled miles to get here and were very disappointed.

Rather rundown and certainly not worth the price to visit.Website does not make clear that unless visiting on a 'steam' day nothing works, noone there except at reception to ask.

Many thanks for your feedback, this is great to hear, as working wool factory we operate on weekdays, I am sorry we hadn't made that clear to you, as we rely on volunteers to demonstrate the machines particularly at the weekends occasionally this does mean this is not achievable, we do not get any funding to maintain what Historic England describes as the best and most complete victorian mill complex in the country, the factory does operate during the week and at weekend we aim to demonstrate to visitors.

The outside is poorly set out with entry point away from the main entrance. Run down and in need of TLC. Museum has loads of facts, but little worthwhile information. "when the little slobs have been diss-carded, the big slobs pass through the 1879 Horace and Morris Whoppett combs before going on to three sizes of Whirrzel Mangles, saved from Fox's Wellington mill." I made that up, but only the names, not the style. Frankly I'm none the wiser. The shop is pathetic with a few coarse woollen fabrics for sale. I know there's a Puttee exhibition in the museum, but not everyone wants to wear them as socks. We kept well away from the Official Guides, both of whom shouted and went into great detail to show their "expertise". Will not be going again, no matter how much it rains.

Thank you for your feedback, the museum is run almost entirely by volunteers with no funding, we are fortunate to have almost 100 volunteers but an estate of some 14 acres needs a lot of up keep, I am sorry you didn't find the guides useful, they get overwhelmingly good feedback interpreting the museum to visitors, indeed whilst tripadvisor reviews have given us a Certificate of Excellence again for the 4 years running, we are working on plans to refurbish the museum and your feedback is much appreciated, I am sorry that you did not enjoy your experience or partake of the guides who would have brought the museum to life for you.

Coldharbour Mill is a truly fascinating place. However, without a guided tour I can understand why some people were underwhelmed in their reviews. Most of the machines are labelled but the whole place is brought to life on a Steam Day. If you book in advance on their website you get a 15% discount for tickets. There are separate tours of both the mill and the steam engines and for the latter you get a timed ticket so you might need to wait a couple of hours for your assigned tour. Also, the tickets for these tours do run out. For the Mill tours you wait at an appointed spot -. our guide (named Michael, I think) was excellent and explained everything in a practical, interesting and informative way. The steam engines were wonderful machines and all of them were working on the day we visited. There are also many other things to see like the air raid shelter, the collection of dolls houses, sensory garden, etc. so allow 2 to 3 hours for a visit. Finally, the coffee and cake in Braziers cafe was pretty good so all in all an excellent place to visit.
