Capt. Dennis Cox is a kind, informative, confident yet humble veteran fisherman who provides a wealth of interesting, intriguing information about both the land geography and ocean. The journey includes not only a quest to see whales, but a sensational right along the mountainous, rocky coast and coves. We saw a huge ocean sun fish (sc. mola mola), dozens of pilot whales, and seals. We were wary of the zodiac boat, but it was a great, and in my view better, experience then regular fishing boat. Even if we saw no whales, would have still been 5 stars. August 2022, sunny weather, calm waters. Great trip, the best part of our 7 days in Nova Scotia!

I went on a tour with Mark and was lucky enough to see a pod of Pilot whales (with 2 calves) which swam by our boat for most of the tour.
Regardless of seeing whales or not I highly recommend this tour. Since Mark operates out of the Bay of St Lawrence m, you get to see the northern part of the island including Meat Cove. The area is completely breath taking by sea and Mark gives you details on the geology and the history- it is very interesting.
The tour was a little over 2 hours long and was very informative, enjoyable and fairly priced. I would definitely recommend Captain Cox for your Cape Breton whale watching tour.

Highly recommend booking with Captain Dennis Cox. He’s a local and retired fisherman and he knows his stuff. We called him a couple days before to be sure and booked the morning of. Conditions need to be just right not only to see marine life but in order for him to safely charter his boat out into the ocean. Although the whales were no where in sight, we saw some rare leatherback turtles, seals and giant sunfish, as well as some amazing scenery. Thank you Capt. Cox!!!

Highly recommend Captain Cox’s tour:
- saw pods of pilot whales as close as 4 feet away (a few times they swam under the zodiac)
- zodiac goes fast so very fun ride
- we had great clear weather so that helped
- the zodiac vessel is in great shape spotless
- captain cox very friendly and helpful
- gorgeous geological rock formations
- great way to view the shore of CBI
He goes quite far out along the CBI shoreline
- tour length about 90 mins or even a bit more
A few notes:
- the zodiac bounces up and down very hard especially if sitting in front. so folks of a certain age may find his tour hard on their joints/back etc. But I had no problem.
- whale sightings highly dependent on weather

The zodiac ride is a lot of fun and definitely the best way to experience a whale watch. We had a pod of over 12 pilot whales swim around us and came within arms reach!
He then took us along the bay where we had some breathtaking views of the cliffs along with multiple seals. Having grown up in the Bay St. Lawrence area, he is very knowledgeable of the area and shared some fascinating facts and stories of the place.
I would absolutely recommend Captain Cox's tour! Make sure to call ahead of time.

Cette excursion a été la meilleure attraction de tout notre voyage. Capitaine Cox a été parfait. Il est très gentil et flexible. En plus, il connaît très bien son affaire et nous a raconté des anecdotes culturelles sur la région durant le trajet. Il est patient, amusant et informatif. L'activité vaut la peine même sans les baleines!
Pour l'observation des baleines, il connaît les "trucs" pour trouver les baleines et se rapprocher d'elles. Nous avons vu des baleines à moins d'un mètre de nous! C'était magique.
Je recommande assurément cette activité!

We were booked and paid. We drove two hours from Chéticamp only to find Capt Cox and his zodiac nowhere to be found. Phone calls went calls unreturned and a local fisherman said he hadn’t seen him this season.
We specifically called ahead because of concerns about the surf and weather not bing seaworthy for a zodiac. Trying to get our money back. Do not pay in advance!
Instead took a fun drive to Meat cove. That was a REAL adventure!

Be careful about this "attraction". I'm afraid it didn't happen for us, despite being booked ahead (& paid - to an account in Ghana???). We arrived at Bay St Lawrence and asked where Captain Denis cox was - various knowing looks, and general consensus that he had not showed up yet for the season, perhaps he comes when he wants to. So non event, not due to weather or lack of whales. Had a great trip following day at Neils Harbour with Dixon Zodiac.

Dennis our tour guide was fantastic. The zodiac ride was entertaining and enjoyable. Even though we were one of the rare tours to not see any whales, it was a fantastic experience. Dennis made sure he showed us other wildlife, from eagles to seals to a mola mola. Also, the views of the cliffs were breathtaking--you can't get views like that from land. He showed us the cliffs of Pangea, which were awe-inspiring. It was a fantastic tour that my husband and I would do again in a heartbeat!

Whale watching at its finest!!! We zipped around the norther most tip of Cape Breton Island on a zodiac boat driven by Captain Cox of Captain Cox's Whale Watching tours. Almost countless times he placed us as near to the whales as legally allowed. Not to mention we saw a rare endangered Sun fish!! Wow!!
What an amazing experience it was for my wife, two boys 10 and 15 and I. I doubt anyone else would have taken us out because the weather turned absolutely awful on a dime!
That man took the boat out just for us, upon learning we had driven over 2 hours to do the tour, rather then turning us away due to bad weather despite telling others he wasn't going out today. A total class act and an area historian! There wasn't much he didnt know.
