I recently undertook the trek to Yamunotri Temple, starting at 4:30 AM, and it was an adventure I will never forget! The 6 km trek is classified as moderate to difficult, and it certainly tested my endurance, but the breathtaking views and spiritual significance made every step worthwhile.
The early morning start was magical—the cool, crisp air and the sounds of nature waking up created an incredible atmosphere. As I ascended, the path offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, making the trek a visual delight.
While the trek is challenging, especially in certain sections, it’s well worth the effort. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching the temple was indescribable. Yamunotri, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, is a serene and sacred place, and standing there surrounded by the majestic Himalayas was an awe-inspiring experience.
Don’t forget to take breaks and enjoy the scenery along the way! The hot springs near the temple are a fantastic reward after the trek, offering a perfect way to relax and rejuvenate.
I highly recommend this trek to anyone seeking adventure and spiritual connection. It’s an experience that will stay with me forever, and I can’t wait to return!

My Yamunotri trip was memorable due to two reasons. The GMVN hotel at Jankichatti turned out to be a little gem and the horse owner Rana ji ph - 7895503568 gave me a good horse and a great horse handler called Lavansh, who turned out to be the best damn photographer ever. He also took great care throughout the 7 km ride making sure I didn't get knocked by the other mules and palkis. At the temple, he even gave me money for the donation box as I hadn't carried change. Excellent care and attention without any hope of a reward. Sadly on the next trek...Kedarnath, I got hit multiple times by other horse riders knees and the bamboo poles of palkis bcoz the horse boy there was not so careful. Thanks Rana ji & Lavansh.

After trekking 6.5 KM, you see a bright yellow temple and thank your stars for making this happen.
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and has a black marble idol of the goddess. It is considered the source of the river Yamuna and is one of the four sacred shrines in India’s Char Dham pilgrimage. (In clockwise, it's the first dham).
Yamuna is considered the daughter of the sun god Surya and the sister of Yama, the god of death. She is revered as a symbol of purity and is believed to cleanse the souls of those who bathe in her waters. The temple is surrounded by natural hot springs, and it is customary for pilgrims to take a dip in these waters before visiting the shrine.
The Garba Griha contains the idol of Goddess Yamuna made with black marble and decorated with garlands. There is an idol of Goddess Ganga in white stone beside the idol of Goddess Yamuna
Another legend sees Yamunotri as the hermitage of ancient sage Asit Muni. The Muni used to bathe both in Yamuna and Ganga, but in his old age, he couldn't travel to Gangotri. Realizing his problem, a stream of Ganga started to flow beside that of Yamuna.
Two hot springs are also present at Yamunotri, offering relief to tired hikers. Surya Kund has boiling hot water, while Gauri Kund has tepid water suitable for bathing. The spring water is said to be hot enough to cook rice and potatoes

We stayed at Bardot and went by car up to Janki Jatti.
From there the mountain can be claimed by trekking , pony raid and dolis( 6 kms).Even basket man carries one person single handed.
We went by doli…it is certainly inhuman but considerate our age that was the only workable action.
There was rain on the way and cold as we went in October.
Yamuna originates up above in the glacier in the mountains but hot water comes in a small place called Yamuna kund.
One can take sulphur ( hot water Amana here)
Ma Yamuna Ana maa Ganga and uthava Moorthy of Yamunaji are in the temple.
All beautiful and divine

We stayed at Barkot, started at 6 from Barkot hotel, drove to Yamunotri yatra base. Took us about 1 hour and 30 minutes. We went by pony, they charged ₹2,500 per person. Walking is also possible, but some paths are wet and slippery with the pony dung. Spent about an hour in the temple and the yamuna river behind the mandir. People have spoiled and spoiling throwing clothes, plastics etc. Don't know when people will become sensitive to the environment.....

We went to Yamunotri on 11May and stayed in Gmn Rest House. The weather was pleasant. We started at 0600 hrs, booked pony ride @2500pp return. It took 3 hours to reach Yamunotri and 2 hours on return. One hour for darshan and scan in hot ulphur water kund. The path is very narrow and steep. You get a feeling that you'll fall any moment. In my opinion palki is a good option

We went to Yamnotri in May month which really crowded as temple was closed last 2 years due to COVID.
Coming to Trek and temple, this Trek is quite difficult than other treks and uphill task to complete. If you can't walk, you have doli, pony etc available.
Start very early 5 am to avoid pony on the route. Once ponty starts, way will be dirty. It will be mesmerizing experience to go on such a divine Trek. You would get needed snack during the Trek.
A key improvement I see, there should be proper washroom during the Trek and those were clean very regularly.
Temple is very divine and soaks you in religious emotions. It also has a hot water spring where people can tak bath. Temple is clean and usually you get enough time to do the darshan. Spend good 2 hours there.
There is lot of scope to improve these heritage and religious site, I could see the government is already trying their best.

Yamunotri dham is one of the four chota char dham in the Uttarakhand state. Situated at an altitude of 3200m its about 150km from district headquarters uttarkashi. Buses are available from rishikeah, haridwar and dehradun to Uttarkashi. The last town where one can get accommodation is Janki chatti. From there one have to trek about 7km. Horse, dolly, pitti etc are also available. Trek through the picturesque mountains itself is divine. Up there is a hotspring and kund with hot water where one can take a holy dip before darshan at the temple. Remember, one can go solo to save time and money.
