We loved our visit to the ruins and the part dedicated to the saint, but Cromwell's cannonball might be the highlight!

Such a beautiful trail walk to St. Gobnait's site. Site well maintained. Beautiful, loved the walk. Beautiful trail walk up hillside with wonderful views to enjoy leads to the monument. Nicest trail walk I have been on in a while. Loved it, well done to local community.

Really peaceful spot, just of main road. Leave the hustle behind and reflect.. Great atmosphere. Ancient past revisited

We walked a lovely loop from Ballyvourney, up the Forest walk and into the monastic site. Really beautiful and peaceful place with a statue, well and grave of St. Gobnait. Would definitely recommend especially after reading some of the history of St. Gobnait.

There is a modern church, and then there is the well and graveyard a few miles away. I recommend it. The Cork Branch of the Classical Association brought the attendees of the Summer School to a ruined castle and then to the modern church where the priest brought out the 1000 year-old wooden image of Gobnait; pure paganism. He says three Masses on her feast day, so great is the local devotion to her and he dare not lose the wooden image. There is a side shrine of her in the church. A few miles away is her well on a mound. Some of us tasted the water as there are cups left there. There are deer and bees on the pedestal as legend stated that she was to where there were 9 hind. In ancient Ireland only a king had 9 of anything. That represented patronage and protection. Honey was used the only sweetener in those times and more important it was a known antiseptic. Saint Gobnait or goddess was a healer. There is also a famine soup kitchen,a deconsecrated Protestant church and the ruins of a Catholic church with a Sheela-na-Gíg, rather worn and a large ball in an alcove that Gobnait used to destroy a tower in the legend part of her story. There are many graves and memorials to people buried away from here. One of the graves belongs to Seán Ó Riada, a famous composer and arranger of traditional Irish music. The day sadly was damp as the countryside was stunning and belonged to the Coldhurst family. Dr..James Coldhurst who acted as a go-between for Princess Diana and her stenographer, Andrew Morton belongs to this family.

St. Gobnait's story compelled me to include her monastic site in my visit to Ireland. We found it to be a very interesting place of pilgrimage. It was a very serene, meaningful place. We had a bit of trouble locating it, however. We were surprised at the lack of visible signage pointing us to the place, but fortunately we had done a little research and we asked the postmaster at Ballyvourney for clear directions. The bridge over the Sulane River was very charming, and the landscape surrounding the monastic site was pretty. Well worth a visit if you're going through Balleyvourney, but read about St. Gobnait's story first on the Internet--it's awesome! Also, our host at Killarney Lodge told us about a new brewery in Balleyvourney called 9 White Deer Brewery (named so for St. Gobnait's vision) and we will plan to include that in our next trip to see St. Gobnait.

St Gobnait's well is next to an ancient tree on which people hang mementos and symbols of their prayers. The wall between this world and the spirit world is thin here.

An ancient site of pilgrimage venerating St. Gobnait and recognised by Pope Clement in 1601. A hidden gem.

st Gobnaits (or st Abbey) monastic site is situated in a scenic location over a quaint humpbacked bridge beside ballyvourney village and its river. It has been a place of sacred pilgrimige for hundreds of years. It is also a burial ground for the local population and it has a very peaceful and serene atmosphere ..Pilgrims travel from far and near to do the "rounds" and drink the water from the holy well.It is a place of quiet ambience, peaceful and renews the spirit

Easy to find coming from Macroom on the N22 to Ballyvourney and as you drive into Ballymakeery look for St Gobnaits Church on your right then a short drive and take the next left over the river Sulane and second right brings you to the monastic site and ruins of St Gobnaits.
Lots to see when you get there with the ruins, statues of the saint herself, various stations, burial ground and wells.
Great Irish history to absorb...I did not realise until now that St Gobnaits is the patron saint of beekeepers and high on the list of renowned saints with a regular pilgrimage here in February...well recomended and a very thought provoking place.
