An amazing hidden gem in East Melbourne Victoria Australia. Our experience from the booking to leaving was exceptional. Our guide Sue was wonderful and kept us enthralled with the wealth of information about the property and its treasures. We were allowed to photograph items but definitely not touch anything which was fine as it needs to be preserved for future generations. The tour is an hour and a half and has some very steep stairs to climb, so be mindful if attending and you cannot do stairs. Upstairs was brilliant and we loved every minute of the tour. It is something to go see for sure. Courtesy bus ride from the Pullman Hotel and dropped at the door. Excellent little touch. Ladies at the property were so polite courteous and knowledgeable. Upon finishing the tour there is a small gift shop which is quaint and well laid out.
I went with two girlfriends and we all loved it. The items on display change three times a year so will be going back for sure. There is so much to see in this museum that is pa Jed into what was this gentleman’s home. Great experience. A definite must do if in the area. Cost is very much in one’s budget and bear in mind this is not and I repeat NOT a child friendly place. Items are hundreds of years old and not replaceable. There are no rope guides and they rely on you NOT touching things as you walk through the home. It’s an eyes only place. But boy my eyes boggled at the items.

I have lived in Melbourne for more than 30 years and had not known about the Johnston Collection. For me it was a hidden treasure. Our guide Sue was fabulous and very knowledgeable.
We were greeted with a cup of tea or coffee served with a delicate biscuit and served in equally delicate Wedgwood cups and saucers. Such a treat and a great way to start the tour.
I highly recommend this museum.

Th Johnston collection is a wonderful experience of going back in time. The display was wonderful an experience of luxury in days gone by. Our guide Ella was amazing , informative & so knowledgeable but such a delight. The gift shop at the end of the experience is delightful & has some unique & beautiful gifts

We booked 2 tickets online for a tour and then we were treated to another private tour for the 2nd time on our trip. Our tour guide Peter was very knowledgeable and gave us a lot of background information about William Johnston, his life, and William's eventual gift of his collection to the people of Victoria. This collection is a very extensive collection of mainly European art pieces and housewares but there were some Asian pieces as well that are rotated periodically. I would recommend taking this tour if you have the time and enjoy seeing unique European vintage housewares and art work.

From the private collection of Mr Johnston donated to the Heritage Trust. A lovely insight into the household items that were used to entertain or decorate a home from a Jacobite cupboard in the kitchen to chandeliers and tea sets and other associated stuff in all the rooms of this double terrace house. he was an antique dealer travelling between the UK, India, China and Australia. A nice way to spend 2.5 hours

I have been on a tour of the Johnston Gallery and I have attended interesting talks there.
Everything you see is beautiful and of the
highest workmanship.
I buy lovely unique items from the shop.
Now I don’t live in Melbourne and I don’t
recall the dates of when I visited the gallery.
I visited on my own.
I just had to choose from a limited dates suggestion below.
I know if no other gallery like the Johnston
and I definitely recommend anyone interested
in the fine arts to visit there.

Curator, Roger Leong talked about a retrospective at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum about The Life And Work Of Carla Zampatti.
The exhibition covers Zampatti’s story through interviews with the designer herself, clients, family, friends, employees, and associates alongside 100 of her key designs from the 1960s to 2021.
It was a very interesting lecture and is part of a series of talks.
The shop is magnificent and has items of high quality not available elsewhere, so it's a great place to shop for that special gift.
Although we didn't do a tour this day, the house is well worth a visit, tours must be booked.

This was an up close and personal experience with a knowledgeable and engaging volunteer guide. The were no ropes or barriers, but the “no touching” requirement was observed. It was a very personalised experience as there were only three of us and a wonderful rapport was established, questions asked and stories recounted. The collection was awe inspiring, the lives of the owners most interesting and the curatorship impeccable. Well worth every penny … we will return for the next exhibition/event.

The Johnston Collection is open weekdays with three guided tours each day - at 10am, 12 noon and 2pm. Please go to our webpage to make a booking directly or you can phone us 03 9416 2515 during office hours. All our tours are pre-booked and prepaid. We hope to see you here soon!
