Utter waste of time. The website says that this is open 24 hours but we drove to find a locked gate. No info on line as to when to visit. Terribly disappointed

If you want to see Gannets this is a good general spot to view them. This year they were breeding and mostly young birds were on the nesting area through the gate. If you want to photograph gannets the Popes Eye colony of gannets is far superior for flight shots, pairs of gannets clicking beaks and gannets hovering above trying to find a spot amongst the other birds. At Popes Eye colony there are many adult birds with big wing spans and landing on the water. Watermarq have excellent boat trips from Sorrento Pier for diving and sightseeing out to Pope Eye Gannet colony.Pick a clear sunny day and go on the 2pm boat as the light is coming across the gannets and lots of detail on feathers and eyes. Use at least a 200 or longer lens. You also can photo seals on the way back !

We had a nice walk all around this area on a nice sunny day but did not see any gannets. It was also a nice drive to the point

I could complain about the biting wind and horizontal rain but this is a gannet colony and perfectly satisfactory for the residents thank you very much. It’s good to see these nonhuman fellow Australians claiming a patch of the mainland, albeit a rather exposed patch.

Allegedly, this is a 'must see' in the Portland region. It is certainly heavily promoted as being a unique experience in Australsia! However, we found it a complete NON-experience!
From the Danger Point car park there are a number of paths which lead nowhere (certainly not to a ganet colony). The one path that apparently did was confusingly signed and padlocked anyway!
Our subsequent phone inquiries to the Portland Visitor centre provided equally baffling viewing advice. Initially, we were advised that access was via the (padlocked!) gate. Then, they told us that the ganets were on a distant Island but could be viewed from a platform in the carpar.
However;
a) The sign near the platform was ominously marked with warned 'Danger! Shooting range!"
b) The island was (by my estimation) at least few kms away.
c) Finally, at a push, the centre admitted there were NO GANETS nesting this year anyway!!
So, in summary; If you're seeking a cold, windy site, supplied with scant, confusing information, with no access to wildlife, then all your expectations will be met!
Otherwise, you may well ask yourself 'What's the point?'

You just have to be there at the right time! (Or you will be kept from a distance to view the birds, I was so lucky I know.)

We drove out to see the bird colony, following the road signage, only to be blocked off as the rifle range was in use. The colony sits right behind the range. Very disappointed not to see the birds and to see the range so close.

This is a great location with some amazing views. I wish there was some more information about these birds and location even with the rock island in the ocean from it (I assume their breeding/nesting rock). I was a bit unsure of the rifle range right behind the top viewing platform but I’m sure that if there was a live fire happening they would close off this platform and walk ways around the range. Also the road to the lookout is in some spots too narrow especially if you have someone inconsiderate coming the other way.

Recommended by the Portland Visitor Centre. Malcolm was our expert volunteer guide and we were able to see the birds up close. A different and really interesting experience.

Hi Dallas, Anytime during the day..... the birds are there all the time. They became overcrowded on the nearby Lawrence Rocks around 2km out to sea, so they established a colony on the mainland. Even though they are wild birds, they do not get frightened when we humans walk nearby so you will get excellent photos and also be able to watch these graceful birds fly around. Road out there is also good. Just look for the signs.
