After being put off since AUGUST our organization was bumped by another group after we were initially told via email that they weren’t booking ANY groups until January! Our large group, part of a conference, had one day free to visit the museum, and we told them that. To say we are disappointed by this unprofessionalism and disorganization is an understatement.

I love language and all things words. This museum was an awesome opportunity to learn about language and its origin. The three story building ( The old Franklin School) has lots of interactive exhibits that incorporate everything from language and the media to culture, bias and words as power. How did certain words become part of our current lexicon and where did they originate?
There is also an exhibit area devoted to the plays on words. I love a good dad joke so this particular room was lots of fun to me.
There is an area with an immersive AR type experience that allows you to put tons of books under the sensor and hear about the story and why a specific person was drawn to it. This particular room also has a secret room in which you can listen to poems being read celebrating language.
Karaoke room is also lots of fun. Give yourself a few hours to wander through the museum.
There is also an exhibit area devoted to the plays on words. I love a good dad joke so this particular room was lots of fun to me.

Such a wonderful experience for all ages. While my group was all adults, we had a fabulous time learning about words and language and watching children engage the exhibits in their own ways. It’s a lively museum using all sorts of awesome technology to enrich and engage and inspire. Definitely a must see in DC!

Planet World is real gem, an amazing hands-on museum about language. Our seven and eight year old grandsons had a delightful time in every room. Blank screens lit up with diorama-like scenes from favorite books when you read a line from the book aloud; holograms appeared when books were placed on desks; there were opportunities for jokes, to learn words from other languages; and even do karaoke. In one room, the children could dip brushes in pots of colored light and paint the scene on the wall, turning it to winter, a magical kingdom, autumn, so many choices! On our way out, there was a kiosk that would spit out a poem, a children’s story, or a classic. One of our grandsons selected all three. We also ate a delicious lunch at the Immigrant Food cafe which is on the ground floor. Visiting this museum was a great choice for a no-school day. And even better - admission is free (but donations are recommended).

What an incredible place! Words are brought to life and every room will be entertaining and informative. Take a book from the shelf and place on the table, then watch it come to life!
Best time to go is midweek around 3pm when school aged people will not be present.

Very interesting and well set up museum about words.We went with our grandchildren 4 and almost 8 and all of us were very engaged. Lots of hands on and interactive exhibits and all of us learned a lot. We stayed there for 2 hours and could have been there longer if we didn't need to get somewhere else. Easy to get too. No cost to enter but reservations suggested.

This museum far exceeded my expectations! A must see if you are in DC, educational yet very interactive. Not much for kids under 6 but most ages 7 up Through seniors were highly engaged and enjoying themselves. We spend 3 hours there which is 2.5 hours longer than we lasted at another paid private museum near by.

If you like words - THIS IS YOUR PLACE!
My partner and I have lived in the metro DC area for years and NEVER hear people talk about Planet Word. We finally took a day to go explore it, and wow, what a hidden gem!!!
The blurbs I read before visiting said to expect to stay 90 minutes. W-R-O-N-G. If you like words, and if you are up to interacting and participating in the displays, you need much more time.
So many cool exhibits. The light up word wall was amazing, as was the library itself. And the advertising exhibit... We were not disappointed by a single section of this outstanding museum.

The only problem with the Word Museum: it is so innovative, that it is hard to describe. I took my five-year old grandson and he was immersed for hours. Imagine a wall where you can learn new words by "painting" new scenes. Or a library where the books read to you. Or a karaoke where you can belt out the words to Frozen as the construction of the lyrics is displayed on a gigantic screen. When they say "all ages", they mean all ages will enjoy this place. It also free!

What a lovely surprise this delightful place is! Around every corner, colorful and creative exhibits. All very hands-on and each in a different way. I was there with family that included a teen and tween. They were totally engaged. Even more remarkable - this museum asked for donations and did not have a set admissions charge. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff who obviously are there because they, too, are actually engaged I the mission of Planet Word. I don't live in the DC area but will promote this to friends and family who are teachers, as Planet Word offers not only on-site opportunities for field trips but have remote materials that can be accessed anywhere at all. This place is a must visit! Young children through retired couples were there at the same time we were - all obviously enjoying and learning as much as we were.
