There are 2 long routes, with a central section on both routes. The trams run at approx 10 minute intervals, and are a mixture of single and double units. Destinations and stop names are in English as well as Amharic. Tickets are generally 4 Burr, and are purchased from kiosks near the entrance to the stop, though not all stops have them.
Bags are searched at each stop, and water is not allowed on the trams. Tickets are sometimes inspected at the stop entrance. Most of the route is elevated. The trams can be very crowded, particularly the single units, but passengers are helpful to each other. The tram frquency needs to be increased, and the system needs to be expanded, particularly to the airport and railway station, and to include the administrative areas to the NE of Taksim Square.

Built by the Chinese and Ethiopian partnership, this wonder was built to help move people and remove huge city traffic congestion and pollution. This is the new Addis and the new Africa. Well done as more that 100,000 people use it daily

Excellent way to get around cheaply. Runs through the center of the city. You will have to get off and take machina to get to where you want to go if it is not the city Center. very crowded during peak hours.

If you want to visit Addis, this is the way to do it. Addis Light Rail cuts the city in to North-South and East-West. Just start from one of the starting points, take a window seat and never get up until you reach the last station because it can be real crowded and you can't handle it standing up. do only End-to-End trip at a time. (and watch your pockets)

Having lived several times in Addis Ababa, the light rail transit is fun to ride in the off hours such as noon or early afternoon when everyone is at work. Then the trains are comfortably crowded. When it is busy, the trains are very crowded and often run late.

The new light rail system has a great lay out for the city. They say that 150,000 people travel on the Light Rail each day. If you travel on weekends or rush hour, you may or may not get into the light rail car. The system needs at least 3x as many cars. Some of the trains are short and have only two sections. Other trains have four sections. When the trains are crowded you really need to watch you phone, wallet and anything you are carrying. Never wear a backpack as it is too easy to slit the packs.
You cannot beat the price as a short ride is 2 Birr, a medium distance is 4 Birr, and a full end-to-end trip is only 6 Birr. There are only a few seats in each car and so most people have to stand and hold the hand rails.
At each station you need to look for the Orange Building and buy your ticket before you board the train. On each platform, transit police may ask to see your ticket. On some trains there are police who will also check for tickets.

After riding this I knew why the desk clerks at the hotel had laughed at us when we said we were going to take the light rail instead of a cab. This is, hands down, the worst public rail transit I have ever ridden. Trains are small & infrequent, leading to incredible crowding. This is made worse by the fact that as soon as a train pulls into a station everyone tries to shove on immediately, leading to conditions just short of a physical fight to try and get off. There is also a large gap between the platform and train in most stations, and these conditions lead people to step in this gap accidentally which is incredibly dangerous. I'll note this phenomenon is really reserved for the light rail system, other transport (vans mostly) functions well & Addis is fine in terms of navigating crowded areas in general.
I've been on plenty of other systems (Tokyo, Mumbai, NYC) that are severely overcrowded but where people at least have an understanding of how to deal with a crowded system. Addis is just absolute chaos.
They system also isn't terribly fast or comprehensive. On the plus side it's super cheap (pennies a ride), but unless you're on the tightest of budgets I'd stick to cabs.

Very good question. 3 lines are running with daily service. Maybe best to check the Addis transit authority for details on service times
