This theater is one of Jerash's most precious gems.

While not having preserved the "Scaenae frons" (i.e. the back wall) to its full height like Bosra in Syria - which I have seen, and which is probably the best preserved theater in the whole Roman world - the Gerasa south theatre is amazing for the decorative details of the lower row of the "Scaenae frons" (which have been preserved until today), of the "Scaena" (stage house) and of the "Ima Cavea" (the lower semicircle of seats); and for the rows of seats which largely retain the original stones, torn apart by time.
It's certainly not exceptional for its size: the steps could accommodate up to 4700 spectators, including those of the "summa cavea" (the top of the semicircle of seats, intended for people of lower status), which has now disappeared. For a comparison: 17,000 seats in Bosra and 24,000 in Ephesus, 6,000 in Merida in Spain, 5,000 in Athens – theater of Herodes Atticus – and in Sabratha in Libya. But bear in mind that Gerasa had three theaters….

Another highlight of Jerash

The day we visited, three men were playing in the theater, one on drums and one on bagpipes and one leading the group. We could also find the spot to stand to have your voice project throughout the theater. Amazing place.

Grande teatro romano

Era il teatro piu' grande della Gerasa romana. Costruito nel 90 d.C poteva ospitare 3500 persone. Il palcoscenico e' stato restaurato e il teatro ha ancora un'ottima acustica. Come a Roma, in occasione delle Naumachie ( battaglie di navi) veniva allagato e trasformato in piscina.

Construit entre 81 et 96, le théâtre sud avait une capacité d'accueil estimée à 5000 spectateurs.
Du haut du théâtre, le paysage sur Jérash en fond de toile est magnifique.

A lot of this structure has survived intact after earthquakes & abandonment, so you don't need a huge imagination to see this in action in its day. For some reason there's a Jordaniian bagpiper who plays here. Very odd.

Para tener cerca de 2000 años, no se puede pedir mas.

Theatre was centre of prosperous city

The theatre was popular entertainment in Roman times and Jerash has two theatres. This is the smaller theatre. It has an enchanting atmosphere. The columns add to the sense of history. At he time the theatre was constructed, Jerash was a large and prosperous city.
