Spent 2 weeks in NK and want to go back...
It was bitterly cold (-9) but you didn't feel the cold really as things all around me were so interesting and absorbing...
Do what your guides say and all will be OK!!!
'Regent Holidays' (UK) were my tour operators!........Spot on!!!

You have to dress modestly (no short pant, flip flop). Visitors can buy a bouquet (2 $ small one 10 $ big one) to put in front of the statues.

Taking flowers to present was seen as very respectful. The whole place is incredible to see as a monument and observing the people showing respect. We managed to get an amazing pic where the military were leaving to the right and a wedding procession were arriving to our left. Incredible experience. Ensure you wear smart clothes here.

To be honest, Pyongyang has a plethora of monuments, so many that one soon feels immune to the effects of patriotism the North Korean government hopes to instill within one's psyche and moral beliefs. So if you decide you've had enough of all these man made creations dedicated to the greatness of man (or a man) don't feel guilty; you are not alone. But of all the monuments to skip this is not one of them.
To say Mansudae Grand Monument is grandiose is an understatement. It is enormous and stunning, truly larger than life. As much as I do not approve of the leadership of North Korea I felt it proper to bow at the foot of their statues more so out of respect for the people than for their leadership. For the local citizens absolutely flock to this site by the hundreds and whether it is true adoration or forced obedience they certainly do a proper job of showing their respect and because I feel a kinship to the average person here I do not want to upset them in any way. Hence, the quick and appreciated bow.
It is also a breath of fresh air to see so many "real" people out on a beautiful sunny day. Many newlyweds taking official portraits and families and other couples. It is nice to see a bit of normalcy in this crazy place that is North Korea.

The shear size of the two Kim statues is not realized until you get up close to them. All Koreans must bow down in unison to them and lay flowers before them. Foreigners are encouraged to do the same, but not mandatory, although some might think it polite to do so, then do it if you want. i didn't and my guide was not offended. As long as you don't do anything stupid or degrading to their culture, it will be fine. The mural behind the statues of Mt Paektu is worth looking at, as are the two massive structures on either side of the statues.
Well worth the visit when in Pyongyang

This place is fascinating to visit. Two gigantic statues of the previous leaders with sculptures depicting the struggle on either side. Locals come to pay respect. In a way, it’s their religion. Although they are forced to do so by their school or company.
Our group was given the option to stay on the tour bus if we wanted. Each individual did not have to buy flowers but we did have to bow. Best to listen to tour guides on this one.

One time life experience.

This is mainly directed to Tarnya M of UK.. or anyone who visited North Korea recently.
Did you travel to NK via a tour agency or did you organise it yourself.
Kind regards, Steve

You can only go with an organised tour.
Beijing based and British managed Koryo Group is a long established and reliable company with multiple tour options.
I toured the DPRK twice with them and had an amazing time.

Actually it's a more general question - given that I'm think of going to NK next year - probably based around May Day.
How did you do your tour with - and which one was it?
Cheers
Tony
