In Daejeon for over a month now, and having read virtually everything I brought with me and making good progress from a loan from my son, I was delighted when he suggested that he introduce me to the Aladin Used Bookstore. I am not a fan of ebooks, preferring the real thing, so this was a real treat.
Just 100 m from the City Hall Metro Station, accessed by an elevator on the top floor of a building on the corner, the Aladin Used Bookstore is a great resource for English Language readers, starved of good material.
Obviously this is a Korean store, but to it's credit it has a sizeable English Language section - over to the right, about half way down as you exit the elevator.
The majority of the ex pat community here come out to study as students, or to teach and so, not surprisingly, there is a good supply of textbooks and English Language Learning materials, but there are also other genres on offer too - non-fiction, Christian, cookbooks, travel books and lots of fiction.
The novels aren't categorised alphabetically by author, but that just makes the search more interesting. It is also worth having a look in the Young Adult section, as fiction hasn't always been graded accurately, hardly surprising when English is not your first language.
In addition to books, there are also DVDs on sale, book related stationery and gifts.
Prices are so-so - I paid around £20 for three novels and a Christian book - not quite charity shop / thrift store prices, but such a wonderful resource to have in the city and, with stock reliant on other English language readers bringing in their books (the store will purchase second hand books) it mixes up the range of titles available. All the books I purchased or picked up to have a look at were in very good condition.
Great for a browse.
