Located in the centre of Gyeongju, in an unassuming park with burial mounds, we by chance arrived at a purpose built exhibition hall open to the public for free. Entering in to the circular walls of the building, what first impressed us was there were no crowds, just us, we had the whole hall to ourselves for a few minutes, then no more than six. Through a video presentation, information boards and the amazing replica cross section of the tomb where the gold crown was discover, we quickly grew an understanding of the construction method of the tomb, the sheer size and resources required. This truly was one of the highlights of our self-guided walking tour around Gyeoungju; a hidden gem.

An excellent presentation of the construction techniques for a royal burial mound, of which there are many in and around Gyeongju. This was a site pulled apart by occupying Japanese, then re-explored by Korean archaeologists to better understand how these mounds were made and why they remain in such good shape (lots of river rocks, timber and clay). Outstanding english-language video provided. Free entry!
