This memorial complex is one of two within walking distance of the Urgench airport. We had extra time before our flight, so decided to take a stroll to view the complex. When walking in a southerly direction away from the airport, the Al Beruni complex is on the right side of the road. The entrance to the complex is in between two small brick buildings, with each having two sculpted wooden columns facing each other .A plaque on the buildings states the year that the complex was opened i.e. 1999, in English and Uzbek script.

As you walk towards the building at the western end of the complex, there are decorated structures on either side of the pathway. The identical structures have a wall with three arched windows with screens, and the wall is decorated with tiles which are predominantly blue. The wooden roof was supported by four sculpted wooden columns. There were flowers in this area which matched the colours of the tiles.

The main attraction of the complex, is the building at the far end. It has a tall iwan which is decorated with tiles, the interior arched area has a door which was locked. We walked to the side to view the prism shaped blue roof, and the white arches at the side which were topped with blue tile decorations. The rear of the building offered the best view of blue roof. There were two wooden arch shaped windows at the back of the building.

Al Beruniy is the short form of, Abū Rayḥān Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad Al-Bīrūnī. He lived between 973–1052. He was born in Uzbekistan (known as Khwarazm in his era) and is recognised as one of the greatest scholars of the medieval Islamic era. He was a scholar of mathematics, astronomy and geography, amongst other subjects. He wrote 146 books throughout his life. He was friends with another brilliant mind of that era, Avicenna. They were both courted by the Ghaznavid Empire, but Al-Beruniy was forced to accept. He was most famous for the invention of the radius measurement, which he used to estimate the size of the earth. He died in Ghaznī, Afghanistan, where his tomb is today.

The story of his life was immortalised in a 1974 film, "Abu Raykhan Beruni". We thought that it was great that he was remembered in this way, as the exploits of a famous mathematician could be highlighted to future generations. Another famous mathematician, Al Khorezmi , has a memorial complex almost opposite this site. There is a river running to the left of the site, and quite a few persons were bathing and having picnics in the grass. A 10 minute walk west on Zhaihong street, which is next to the river leads to the Goyib Ota mosque.
