The Al Khorezmi Park is one of the must see attractions in the town center. It is on either side of the Al Khorezmi street which heads in a north to south direction. On the left is a monument of Al Khorezmi with arms outstretched. The monument is in a well manicured park in front of a government building. There are two fountains on either side of the walkway leading to the monument. Behind the statue of Al Khorezmi is a half arch on top of four white columns. The upper section, has the name of Al Khorezmi in gold letters. The statue was first installed in 1979 to celebrate the 1100th anniversary of the use of the term "algorithm", which is related to the name of Al Khorezmi.

On the opposite side of the road, in front of the Drama Theatre, was a white clock tower, which had clock faces on all four sides. The interesting section of the clock was the four arch design at it's base. At the corner of each side of the clock, was a white column similar to those on the Al Khorezmi monument opposite. We thought that this was a unique design. This was the third clock that we had visited in a town center in Uzbekistan. Tashkent and Termez had the others. The clock tower was added to "complete" the park shortly after independence in 1991, and the statue of Lenin was removed.

The park was named independence park before being renamed in honour of Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī. He lived between 780-850, and was known as the "Father of algebra". His unique style of writing the solutions to problems and identifying the logic of equations, made him one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. He was born in Khiva, where his statue used to be, just outside the west gate of the inner city. We had tried to visit the statue in Khiva earlier in the day, but apparently it had been relocated, so we were glad to be able to view this one. We had also visited his memorial complex a short walk from the Urgench airport.

The achievements of Al Khorezmi were not just restricted to mathematics, as he produced the first map of the world in 830 and was also well known for his work on clocks and sundials. After visiting this site, the Avesta Park and Zoroastrian museum is a short walk south west, and if you walk along the Shavat canal, the Jalalladin Park can also be viewed.
