This was a highlight of our time in Kyoto. The instructors were very capable and knowledgeable, but most of all they showed delight in our achievements, sharing our excitement at the reveal. After the class, we were given an informative personal tour of the museum, at our own pace, with patience and pleasure.

We had an excellent time at the museum and workshop experience. The staff were all very nice and friendly. Especially, Mr Hiro, he is very patient and explained to us the different techniques. Wonderful service. Very creative too and sustainable.

Really lovely people, the class was fun and the museum extremely interesting. Would recommend to anyone interested in textile arts or if in the area! Lovely to see traditional crafts and meet people so passionate about them.

This was a really fun unique experience! They were able to accommodate a last minute booking. It’s great for beginners with no experience. The scarf dyeing portion is pretty quick and lasts about 20 minutes. I would love it if they offered more advanced workshops for people with higher skill sets, I would happily pay more for a workshop that included more handwork like thread wrapping. But overall I had a great time and loved seeing the beautiful handiwork of the artisans on display.

This was a great way to learn about Japanese traditional Shibori dyeing.
You can dye your own scarf and look around a fantastic exhibit of Shibori techniques. Lovely english speaking staff. Thank you, we really enjoyed this experience.

A great learning experience. I was instructed in the folding and dyeing of the fabric. As the fabric dried I went upstairs to view a video and see more examples of this incredible dyeing technique. This is a working studio. Welcoming to questions. Enjoyed my visit.

A very enjoyable experience . Learnt a new skill from a knowledge teacher. Enjoyed learning about the Japanese fabric history and seeing the beautiful pieces of fabric art and then coming home with a lovely creation.

If you love textiles and making beautiful things, this class is for you! Our group of 6 easily booked the Itajime Shibori Scarf Class with the online request form. The response was immediate, even after the Museum was closed. I requested the class to be taught in English - no problem! I was even able to add our 6th guest at the last minute since the family owned business is so responsive.
We were shown a variety of patterns and colors to choose from and were helped thoroughly for each step. The excitement was incredible when the finished scarf was revelead, quite a memorable souvenir.
While the scarves were drying, we viewed the small museum that was filled with incredible shibori artwork. There is also a gift shop with a nice price range of beautiful shibori clothing, scarves, accessories and purse.
The Yoshioka Family was there on staff to welcome and assist us. Their hospitality was a highlight along with the beautiful artwork the family has produced for several generations!

Hello, We are the Kyoto Shibori Museum. We are open on Sunday, though there might be no one who can speak English on weekends. Please E-mail us to check if there is someone who speaks English or visit the museum on weekdays. Thank you.
