We got lucky and hiked the Thumb Butte area the day before they closed Prescott & Coconino National Forests due to fire danger. They were evicting campers & hikers, and cancelling future camping reservations. Be sure to check before you go.
However, after a long morning hike we could see why -- the ground is cracked and dry, the forest is brown. Prescott desperately needs rain.
Once it reopens, its worth a visit if you like to hike. Lots of trails and unless you insist on doing one of the super popular ones, you won't see many people.
NOTE: There is a $5 day pass fee collected in the parking lots. Be prepared with correct change and a pencil to write with; you must leave your receipt on your dashboard.

If you are traveling from Jerome to Prescott ( or vice-versa) and are up for a thrilling ride, take AZ 89-a and drive through the mountains that comprise the Prescott National Forest. Beautiful panoramic vistas of pine tree-covered mountains. It's not for those with a deathly fear of heights or winding mountain roads with hairpin turns, but for those who go, it's a visual treat.

A great place to get out doors and enjoy the world. Campgrounds, lakes, streams, hiking and horse back trails.

Beautiful. I walked around Lynx lake which by the way is a runners paradise. I also panned for gold at the recreation area. The forest is clean and well maintained with lots of trails and lookout points.

This is definitely a necessary drive in the Prescott area. Take a trip through the mountainside and enjoy the sights! I definitely recommend a scenic drive, especially on a bike or motorcycle but there are trails and campsites as well. This is a great place for star gazing at night!

Of course the Prescott National Forest is not the Rockies but we had a nice hike on the Goldwater Lake Trail. It was a quiet and very relaxing easy to moderate trail. I recommend going

We needed a break from the heat in Phoenix, so we decided to drive up to the forest for a hike in the Thumb Butte area. There are several trails there, which can be used to make a variety of hikes. As we are not regular hikers, we chose an easy circuit that took a couple of hours for us to complete. The hike was manageable for our 8-year-old son, and we enjoyed the nice breezes at the higher elevations.

A weekend of music on the Court House lawn. Stage at one end, freelance jamming on the other. All free. Don't miss it.

5 of us spent the weekend zipping through here in RZRs which can be rented in Prescott. Even though it rained, was cold and we got wet and muddy, it was a fabulous weekend.

Attended a wedding in the forest 6 miles out of town - but felt like we were on our own private spot - beautiful, quiet, and lovely place!

Is there primitive camping available in the park? I just need a place to hang my hammock and maybe build a small fire.

National forest guidelines require that dogs be on a six-foot
leash at all times when in developed recreation areas and on interpretive trails. There are no leash
requirements in the general forest areas.
Even though you’re far away from sidewalks and city streets, there will still be times when you need to
keep your dog on a leash. This is especially important when you’re close to other campers who may not
be dog lovers, or when you’re in an area where your dog could wander off a path and encounter
wildlife. Update all vaccinations and provide flea and tick control for your pet. Also, make sure your
dog has his identification tags on (or is microchipped) in case he gets lost. You should also bring along
a recent photo should you need to show other campers or a ranger if your dog goes missing.
Be very cautious in areas with cliffs, gulches, canyons, caves, big rocks, etc. Many dogs have no
concept of heights, and they can slip under railings. Keep your dog close to you. Bring a short, sturdy
leash for hiking. If you’re hiking in terrain with cliffs, canyons, big rocks or other challenging
conditions, it may be safest to attach the leash to a sturdy harness instead of a neck collar.
Do I have to pick up dog waste? Of course. Most federal, state and county litter laws
require it. Dog waste can spread disease to wild animals and it can contaminate water. Picking up dog
waste is also just common courtesy to the campers, picnickers or the hikers.
