We took a detour to visit the Museum and it didn't disappoint. Even if you have no interest in military history, it is impossible not to find it interesting and at times, quite moving. There is so much information that it may take more than one visit to appreciate all that the museum has to offer - from early 18th century signalling to modern day issues around cyber security.
Have to admit, it was also slightly exciting to visit the Blandford Camp - don't forget to take photo ID!
There is a very helpful video at the start giving the history of the signals (just wish they would turn the volume up a bit of the ladies in the cafe are going to have such a loud 'natter').

After an initial review about opening times, now deleted and updated with a full review here after visiting today.
The museum is fascinating with a detailed history of communications during conflicts and the role of the Royal Signals right up to the modern day.
Lots of information and exhibits to see. Covers a lot of areas even bit of code breaking, so I think I need to visit Bletchley Park too!
We visited as a couple but there are interactive exhibits which youngsters would enjoy too.
We spent about 3 hours looking around. Be sure to remember that adults must bring photo identification because the museum is located at an operational army base. You therefore park outside first, go in to the pass office to get show id & obtain passes/vehicle pass then drive in to the base to the museum where there is ample parking.
Thoroughly enjoyed the museum, learnt a lot!
Nice cafe located upstairs for teas coffees and cake etc. they serve hot food until 1pm.

It was a filthy day in terms of weather but our visit to the royal signals museum was a welcome retreat and well with the drive out to the museum to see all that was on offer. So much to see and great interactive stuff for both adults and kids. Lots to learn and good fun. At least a couple of hours is needed to sample some of the exhibits and absorb all the information.
Cafe also very nice, toilets clean and parking on site.
As others have stated, visitors do have to go through security when first accessing the site but for 5/10 mins this takes at the beginning of your visit, it is well worth the process.

20 members of our Ambassador Club enjoyed a fantastic 2 hour guided tour which started with coffees in the excellent café.
Our tour guide Ryan is the master storyteller, factual, fun and with an amazing recall of detail. I suspect we only touched the surface of his knowledge.
The museum is very special and compares with the best we've visited. It offers a very good grounding for young people and an understanding of the history of communications which they now enjoy, computers, phones etc.
All our members loved the visit and will no doubt be using the RSM's very generous free 12 month return visit deal.

After 'registering the car and getting the correct passes we paid the sensible entry costs and headed to the cafe first for coffees, juice for grandson & delicious cakes at reasonable prices. There was plenty for a 7 year old to do, drive a simulated armoured vehicle, morse code.... as well grandparents. When we had viewed most of the areas we returned to the cafe for lunch, again very reasonable, no childrens menu but prices ae so reasonable he just ate as much as he could. Reasonable choice on the menu, I chose the tuna salad, grandson & husband the dirty fries with chicken which they enjoyed.

Had to queue to be signed in but don't let that put you off. This is a really interesting - and at times eye-opening - exhibition put together with love and with many amazing artefacts. It left me in awe of the batallion and their heroism and duty. Don't for one minute think this is a quick jaunt - it deserves so much more time than that. And make time to visit the excellent cafe. Everyone we met today was friendly and helpful. Definitely recomnended.

A really interesting museum, especially if you are interested in communications.
The museum is well laid out and tells you the history of military communications in chronological order. The majority of the displays are well described. The introduction video is well worth the 30 or so minutes as it tells you the history of the Royal Signals.
Being picky there are some things which could be improved - some of the display PCs were complaining of anti-virus or operating system problems; some of the displays lacked the numbers on items to marry up to the description; some information boards within displays were obscured by the exhibits. Really minor things though.
The cafe is well worth a visit too, excellent cake.

Excellent displays, interactive and interesting. Worth spending a few hours wandering around and then have coffee and cake in the NAAFI. Take photo ID for entry into the camp.

Sorry I did t respond but I have only just seen your question. The museum is quite small do it didn't take us long, about an hour. It really depends how much detail you want to see. My partner has a low boredom threshold so he takes less time than other people and after a knee replacement I only choose small places.
If you are genuinely interested in the subject there is lots to see

Dear Judith. Our admission prices are: Adults £8.00, Snr £7.00, Child £6.00, Family £24.00. The Museum is located "behind the wire" in Blandford Camp, the home of the Royal Corps of Signals. Due to obvisou security issues Photo ID is therefore required for all adults. If you have any problems with providing Photo ID please contact me on 01258 482 248 and I will assist. Kind regards Adam
