I stopped here on my way to Mystic after stopping at Wadsworth State Park. Not crowded at all on a Tuesday in late October. Parking near the entrance/gift shop. Plenty of docents eager to shared information about the art scene in Saybrook, the boarding house, and the grounds. Lots of tonalist and impressionist paintings to view. Lovely views of the Lieutenant River with the fall colors. Some great photo opportunities. A few short trails (maybe .2 miles round-trip). The cafe was closed but the Hungry Goose Cafe was right at the end of the river trail and had a great lunch special. I probably spent 1.5 hours, not including lunch, but could probably see everything in a hour. Recommend.

We had never visited the Griswold Museum. The special exhibit was not something we liked, but the old mansion and its art from the original art colony was very interesting.
The paintings on the door panels and walls were unique and interesting. They gave us a private tour of the mansion - very nice and informative.

My wife and I visited this little jewel of a museum on the last Tuesday of September 2023. Because it was the offseason, our admission fee for two was only $12. Given what we found here, we would rate that as a great value. We watched their 19-minute orientation video, and we found it very informative and well-produced, using images from paintings that we later saw in the Yellow House.
The Yellow House was Florence's boarding house and for many, many summers from 1900 on, she hosted an artist colony of impressionist painters, providing room and board. It seems they were very fond of her, and she of them. To be included in the artist colony for a summer, one had to be invited by the artist leader of that colony; thus, joining this group became prestigious. These artists made up what came to be known as the Olde Lyme impressionists.
The first floor of the Yellow House is largely as it was in Florence's day, complete with what original furnishings they have been able to re-acquire. This includes many paintings done by colony members. There are no placards for these paintings, but the well-informed docent provided good information. There was also a display case containing a small en plein air artist's case/easel so you could see what artists used while painting outside on the property.
The second floor is set up as a gallery with four exhibition rooms. Paintings here are well placarded and the lighting is excellent, allowing you to see the works clearly. And a wonderful group of impressionist works they are!! This was a real surprise, and we found ourselves slowly walking through the rooms, seeing names of artists we did not recognize, but whose work was superb. In particular, we liked the work of Matilda Browne, the only female artist formally invited to join the colony.
One quirk of this colony was the act of painting on first-floor panels --door panels, wall panels, even over the fireplace. Early on, the leader of the colony painted half of the very first pair of door panels and challenged another artist to finish the painting by doing the adjoining door panel in the same style. After that, one had to be invited to paint a panel, and, over the years, doors and walls filled. In some cases, these were original paintings that never appeared elsewhere; in other cases, they were either copies or miniatures of other paintings done by the artist. And over the fireplace is a 9-foot-wide small mural that shows the members of the colony chasing after dogs. Charming, and a wonderful little historical record. Matilda Browne, the one female member of the colony, was invited to paint the door panels of Florence's own bedroom.
In addition to several inviting walking paths, including one down by the river, there are two other buildings: the Visitor's Center and The Studio. The Visitor's Center is where we paid our admission fee and saw the orientation film. It also housed two rooms of paintings that were interesting to see. One of these may house a changing exhibit, while the other contained a number of fine paintings by former artist colony members. The Studio showed us what a painting studio looked like back then, including two very large H-frame easels. This helped us imagine how an artist of the time might have brought his plein air sketch or panel into the studio to use it as the basis for a larger painting on canvas.
We spent two hours here and felt that was sufficient. We recommend this place highly!

I was interested in visiting this museum as it evolved out of one of the many Connecticut artist colonies of the early 20th century. Florence Griswold ran a boarding house that, at the request of an artist from NYC, turned into the summer home for artists, many of them from Connecticut. The Lyme Artists Colony numbered several dozen artists during its two decades, including Will Howe Foote, Childe Hassam, Willard Metcalf, and Matilda Browne. This museum is really a campus of related sites that reflect the daily life of the artists living there. The Florence Griswold House is the home where the artists were housed. The downstairs is a reflection of the artists the lived there and includes some original works painted on doors/wooden panels in the dining room and elsewhere; upstairs is filled with art of Connecticut artists, expressing the Tonalist and Impressionist styles employed by the art colony members. There was a docent on site who shared the history of Florence and the house. We enjoyed the thought-provoking Object Lessons in American Art exhibit from Princeton. There are four outdoor artist trails to see some of the views seen by the artists as they worked en plein air and noting where individual studios once stood. We enjoyed our visit to this unique museum.

We spent a pleasant afternoon at the Florence Griswold museum. We went through the home first, where knowledgeable docents filled us in on the history of the house. We found the dining room, with its panels painted by various artists, to be fascinating! We enjoyed the museum exhibits and a stroll through the gardens, then, as it was a Discovery Sunday, whiled away an hour or so painting en plein air with materials provided by the educational center. This was a highlight of our weekend and we would definitely recommend a visit.

BEWARE - This is not the same, wonderful traditional museum with beautiful art and a lovely old, furnished house.

The curator has in the last year or so radically changed the type of exhibits shown in the separate art gallery. There is now an ultra leftist, woke agenda that practically beats you over the head telling you how horrible all old-style art and subjects were. Even classic Currier and Ives prints got the "America is a horrible place" treatment.

The Griswold house is - so far - free of the new commentary and is still a fascinating record of a unique period in Connecticut art colony history.

We came here to see the Dreams & Memories exhibit before it ends, and we ended up staying for longer than anticipated because this museum and the surrounding grounds are so beautiful. The exhibit itself only took up two rooms and was nicely curated, with a wide range of intriguing artwork. The Florence Griswold House was open today, so we took a tour with the lovely docent Phyllis, who gave us a lot of details about the house and the many artists who lived here. The grounds are lovely, with pretty gardens and people painting the scenery. Parking for the museum is free and is around back. Please note that adult tickets are $12, even though the website says $10.

Great gallery and beautiful grounds on the shore of the Leiutenant River in Old Lyme. Miss Griswold's home served as an artist coliny in the early 20th century and is a work of art in itself. There are many wall panels painted by artists who rented rooms as well as original artwork throughout the home. A must-see for anyone interested in American Impressionists and Tonalists.

Stumbled across this place and it was really nice. There were a bunch of fairy displays around the property. There also a museum and a little cafe. Recommended.

Went to see the paintings by local famous artists and were very impressed with the house, the collection of memorability including furniture and clothing.
Went when the Fairy and Pirate theme was being used, and had the greatest time interacting with the young children searching for clues to a puzzle.
