One of the most significant buildings of the Modernist movement

Chicago is a landmark for architecture, from Louis Sullivan and Daniel Burnham to Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe. Be sure to see the S.R. Crown Hall, designed by van der Rohe and the home of the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Located at 3360 South State Street, it was completed in 1956 and is widely regarded as one of the most architecturally significant buildings of the 20th century Modernist movement. While van der Rohe designed several dozen buildings for the south side of the ITT campus, mostly employing a brick and glass infill system within an exposed steel frame, he deviated from the norm when designing Crown Hall and built a totally different structure which no one had seen before. In designing Crown Hall, he created an openness and simplicity with a suspended roof without the need for interior columns. The two-level building is configured as a pure rectangular form, 220 feet by 120 feet by 18 feet tall. The substructure is reinforced concrete and is independent of the superstructure. The enclosed space is column free with four six-foot steel plate girders welded to eight H-columns. These girders suspend the roof in a single plane to form a primary structure. While the lower level consists of several rooms, the upper level occupies almost 50 percent of the total area of the building but includes only one large, open classroom. Crown Hall was named a Chicago Landmark in 1997 and a National Historic Landmark in 2001 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Mies' masterpiece!!

Passing through Chicago from a weekend trip, we stopped at the IIT Campus to walk about and take in the iconic IIT buildings of Mies van der Rohe. The S.R. Crown Hall is recognized as Mies' masterpiece so we walked about the building and looked through the windows. Didn't go inside as it is not open to the general public. Still worth the time to see!!

Which came first, Farnsworth House or Crown Hall?

I first saw S.R. Crown Hall when covering a high school football game near the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in 1975. And I first saw Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois, when my mother was serving as a docent in 1995. So which steel and glass-constructed landmark of famed architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe came first? Farnsworth House, a one-room country retreat on the Fox River, was completed in 1951. Crown Hall, home of the Illinois Tech's College of Architecture and widely considered one of van der Rohe's masterpieces, was completed in 1956. Located at 3360 South State Street, it is regarded as one of the most architecturally significant buildings of the 20th century Modernist movement. Steel frame, no interior columns, floor to ceiling glass, suspended roof, a single classroom on the upper level. lots of light and open space. "Almost nothing" is how van der Rohe described it. The two-level building is a pure rectangle, 220 feet by 120 feet by 18 feet tall. Crown Hall was named a Chicago Landmark in 1997 and added to the National Register of Historic Places and listed as a National Historic Landmark in 2001.

Completed in 1956, the S.R. Crown Hall houses the College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology on Chicago's South Side. Located at 3360 South State Street, it was designed by German-American Modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and is regarded as one of his architectural masterpieces, famous for its simplicity and transparency. Considered one of the most architecturally significant buildings of the 20th century Modernist movement, Crown Hall is all about basic steel and glass construction, staying true to the architect's "less is more" style. The two-level building is configured as a pure rectangular form, 220 feet by 120 feet by 18 feet tall. The enclosed space is free of columns with four six-foot steel plate girders welded to eight H-columns. These girders suspend the roof in a single plane to form a primary structure. Crown Hall was designated as a Chicago Landmark i 1997 and added to the National Register of Historic Places and declared a National Historic Landmark in 2001.

Mies van der Rohe hall at IIT

We took the Chicago Architectural tour of the IIT campus and visited Crown Hall as part of the tour. It was a well constructed building. When we were there they had a Lego event.

Mies van der Rohe ontwierp in 1956 een onderwijsruimte uit één stuk, zonder kolommen en zonder verdiepingen, met in het midden alleen een serviceblok. Structuur en ruimte waren zijn uitgangspunten. Binnen waren twee groepen studenten architectuur bezig met maquettebouw. Ze hadden alle ruimte.
Alleen op afspraak te bezoeken met een gids van de CAF.

I had to come here to see this exclaimed modern masterpiece by Mies van der Rohe. And you can easily see here “less is more”. I understand it must have been something new and inspiring when it was first built big for today’s standards it is already out of date.

do yourself a favor and see some sights outside of the normal touristy things. SR Crown Hall can easily be accessed via L or driving.

First Stop of Our Chicago Architecture Adventure

Crown Hall was our first stop in Chicago, a trip with two architecture researcher friends. This was once the Chicago landmark that it started the international style of building.

The building is currently under minor construction, and the entrance is closed on the weekend. We were lucky that some student let us in. The main floor is empty right now but the basement library is still intact.
