Rob and Jared were terrific guides, chefs and Maine ambassadors! They were helpful, patient and supportive - - teaching us how to read the river and learn to canoe. Even though I would not consider the trip “budget friendly”, it was a wonderful experience that was worth every penny!

We just finished a 3 night 4 day canoe trip on the St Croix River. We are beginner/advanced beginner canoeists. Four sixty something’s and a couple in their early thirties.
This was the perfect paddle for the six of us!
The river had some movement and was high just exciting enough. The guides - Jared and Rob - were extremely helpful with guidance on how to use the canoe. Very knowledgeable of the local environment.
The equipment was clean and in good shape. The canoes were new (or almost) and the tents were clean and in great shape.
Not only do Rob and Jared guide, they unpack and help set up camp. Including tarps which made sitting around a campfire on a rainy evening enjoyable and a memorable night.
On top of it all we had the entire river to ourselves.
All meals were included. A big breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and a hot substantial dinner. The hot meals were cooked over an open fire by an expert! The food was delicious!
We highly recommend and hope to return!

Rob and Jared, Thank you!!! I had just a great experience canoeing the St Croix River with you. Our group was not the most experienced, but you were both so patient with us. You took all the time that was needed to make us feel comfortable. You didn’t rush us through anything and were so helpful when we struggled to get the padding right. Your passion for guiding was clear in every interaction. We may have had a few spills, but it was a wonderful experience. The rapids were fun and your efforts to make sure we felt prepared to take them on each and every time we encountered them was so appreciated. If you are looking for a fun canoeing adventure with some incredible, patient, and professional guides, you will find it here. I hadn’t spent much time in a canoe before this and, now, I can’t wait to get back in one!

Rob was very responsive initially and offered a reasonable price for kayak rental and delivery- but like they say, you get what you pay for. Rob provided a number to call to confirm my rental and I called the next day and left a voicemail. After not hearing back 24 hour later I called again. 24 hours later I emailed. Another 24+ hours a passed and I was about to book with another company when someone called from Sunrise to take my cc info and confirm delivery for the next morning. Unfortunately, the kayaks never arrived and when we tried multiple times and multiple ways to get in touch we were informed via a Facebook message that they were out of office and did not have a delivery on the books. Later in the day Rob’s wife called to apologize and offer free delivery the next morning. We were thrilled and when we let her know that we had a day trip planned and wouldn’t be there to greet her, she told us that that was fine because delivery was contactless. The kayaks never came. When I emailed to express my disappointment Rob was very defensive and unapologetic. Apparently he was traveling and there was no one to manage his business in his absence, but unfortunately at no time was this communicated to me. With better communication this damper on our honeymoon could have been avoided.

After this unfortunate incident customer communicated she had anticipated this trip for 2 years yet had not confirmed a reservation before Rob departed to work a multi day trip on June 6.
In Rob's absence, customer attempted to confirm a rental reservation which would begin around June 10 on June 8.
The people operating Sunrise Canoe and Kayak in Rob's absence do not do so on a daily basis. Utilizing help in this way is Rob's decision as a small business owner and he stands behind that decision. Customer communicated in her initial grievance that she understood the challenges of operating a small business.
Customer had an interaction with a 16 year old trying to help but this interaction may have added confusion in the situation.
Rob gathered upon returning that customer's acceptance/reaction to the free delivery offer was confused as indifference/refusal because of customer communicating their departure to Acadia.

If you're staying anywhere near Machias, Sunrise is about the only game in town for canoe / kayak rentals or tours. Fortunately, they are a longstanding locally-owned company and they do a fantastic job. We stayed outside Machias for 3 weeks in July 2020, during which time we rented a sea kayak and joined Rob for 3 different day trips (canoeing on the Orange and St Croix rivers and kayaking in Machias Bay).
The sea kayak rental was seamless: delivery to and pickup right from our rental home, right on time, with exactly the paddles and BCDs we had requested. We were able to extend our rental by an extra week with a quick email. All the equipment was in good condition.
Rob was knowledgeable, friendly, and professional from start to finish. He spent a long time on the phone with me before our arrival to suggest the best options for our group (which included young kids, an adventurous teen, 2 middle aged adults and a grandma). He also arranged a customized trip on the Orange River when the Machias River turned out to be too low. Rob ended up being our guide for all 3 trips and he was a pleasure. A Machias local, he's laid back and friendly while also being very professional and careful about safety. In addition to his canoe/kayak expertise, he's a wealth of historical, natural, and cultural information, offering colorful descriptions of historical events like the Margaretta naval battle, identifying birds, animals, and natural features like eagles' nests and beavers' lodges, and discussing what's known (and unknown) about the Native petroglyphs in Machias Bay. And he's not at all overbearing:. He would offer insights and observations when relevant and answer any questions we had, but he also gave us plenty of time to simply enjoy the surroundings in peace and quiet or to chat among ourselves.
Our canoe and kayak trips with Rob were a definite highlight of our time Downeast. Highly recommended.

I had emailed Rob ahead of time to explore options to either canoe or kayak. We've been coming up to DownEast most summers for a week or so these past 10 years and like to see new areas and try new things. Given our schedule and the water levels on the rivers, Rob appropriately steered us to the Machias bay morning tours. Our half day on the bay was shared with one other couple. It is designed to be flexible based up on the participants' ability and interests and Rob was the perfect guide. Our family of 4 split up into 2 tandem canoes. Rob mixed history, naturalist knowledge and a bit of humor to engage the whole family...even fussy teenagers. We will look to doing future trips with Rob and Sunrise in the future.

From my initial email inquiry to the time we bid farewell to guides Rob and Mike, and the others who joined our half-day (4-4.5 hr) Machias Bay kayak tour, Sunrise was exceptional. Rob and Mike provided terrific insight of the area every step (row?) of the way. We saw petroglyphs during our island stopover/break, seals playing, and a massive eagles' nest. If you're in the Downeast area, I can't recommend Sunrise enough! We will definitely be back the next time we're in Maine, hopefully for the Great Wass Island Preserve tour. Thanks, again, Rob and Mike!

I started out the day a bit hesitant for two reasons - a foggy, low visibility day and we didn’t have Rob as our guide. All I read was about how great a guide Rob was, how knowledagle he was, etc. No disrespect to Rob, but I can’t inagine him being better than our guide for the day, Michael. He was wonderfully patient and quick to ease my mind over the far less than stellar weather. His knowledge of kayaking, local history and the local wildlife was extreme. One of the teens in our group commented that he “knew everything about anything we asked him”. The fact that he is also a teacher helped him to easily connect with our group of teens. I should also mention that out of the 6 of us there as very little kayaking experience so he needed patience for us! 5 stars for the experience! Thanks Michael!!

We did the Machias River trip and it was a winner as always. This was our 3rd trip with Rob and he always goes the extra mile to make the trip special. We had a great paddle out to an island where we had our picnic lunch, listened to his stories, and viewed some petroglyphs. In addition to being a great guide, Rob is an amateur historian and had lots of insights into the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War which happened on the waters we were kayaking. Rob will customize his trips to meet his clients’ interests. And he will teach any newbies to kayak properly and safely. We’ll kayak with Rob again next year!

I’d taken a kayak trip that Rob had led two years before. The experience was incredible and Rob's experience, tutelage and knowledge of the area had made for a memorable experience. Friends and I made plans with Rob to go out again last August.
Every contact with Sunrise was professional, personable and accommodating. I was kept apprised of the minimum number of participants necessary and where our requested date stood with those numbers and of other options possible such as taking alternate tours that were already above the minimum number required. The woman answering the phone was always helpful and I had several email exchanges with Rob that always resolved whatever question I had.
Since we’d already had the opportunity to take the tour out of East Machias, we were hopeful to see a new area. The tides, the currents, the weather and our guide, Michael, obliged. We put in at Cutler and had as awesome and memorable day as our past trip! We saw seals, eagles, and petroglyphs. Michael is a certified Maine guide also and could explain what we were seeing, the history of the area, and identify every rock, lichen and plant we came across. He was highly personable and engaged each of us throughout the trek. We also got to try beach rocket and sea peas!
I highly recommend this company and hope to be able to make the Great Wass trip one of these days!

We do and we provide foam gunwale pads and straps if needed with the rental for transporting on your vehicle. We also offer delivery and pick up service for rented equipment which may be easier depending on your situation.
