A magical and magnificent place, a place of meditation where nature reigns supreme. Where the cagou, this emblematic bird of Caillou is the nightingale. The river is really blue. The forest guards are the guardians of this temple of tranquility. If I could, I would set up my hut in these places, but fortunately they are protected.
If you pass through New Caledonia, don’t forget to take a detour, but above all, promise me to respect this oasis in this paradise.

A lot todo here if you are organised. To get into the grander back areas of the park you need to fit with the parks shuttle bus schedule: however, there are areas you can access in your own vehicle that are scenic, of interest and worthwhile to visit for. The drive from Noumea is also pleasant and of interest.
We drove out the haute tree spot and did the short Forest walk to see them. We lunched at the picnic area of Port Perpignan on the lake, from where the shuttle bus departs to the more remote regions of the park.
There is a seniors entry rate to the park.

Overall very authentic park, where a change of scenery is guaranteed. There are numerous facilities for resting or picnicking.
We were lucky enough to see a gagou on the Cagous trail.
The organization of the visit could be improved. In fact, we came for the first time to obtain information to organize our visit on January 31, 2024. Unfortunately, most of the information communicated turned out to be erroneous. The visit to the Blue Valley and the White Valley can be done in a single day, unless you are a fan of hiking. The vehicle shuttle is chargeable with reservation required.
Concerning the reception on site we experienced cold and heat. Indeed, after an execrable welcome with an agent full of himself, constantly giving moral lessons, we particularly appreciated the good humor, kindness and courtesy of the shuttle driver.
We expected something else.

Sublime park, perfectly equipped and maintained. The landscapes are magnificent.
Ultra friendly staff. We chose the mountain bike + kayak option. Top !
We were lucky enough to see a cagou. Almost everyone sees them. A great preservation success.

Renting a car for the day @ 7800 XPF for a Peugeot 3008 was how we got to the park. We took the shuttle bus to Grand Kaori and were happy to see 4 Cagou. They're a photographer's delight as they stand perfectly still while listening for worms. We walked on one of the side tracks towards Pont Germain, our arranged pick up point and spotted a gourd plant on the way. Some people hadn't seen any Cagou so on our trip back the shuttle driver stopped close to Pont Perignon. He clearly knew where to look and scratching around with a stick drew a pair of birds close to the road.
Despite the wet conditions the views, lake, forest and river were spectacular. Toilet and picnic facilities are well located and the park entry fee is reasonable. A highly recommended 'must do.'

Had an amazing full day tour to blue river park on Monday with François from Caledonia Tours (Ph: +687 78.68.38). François was so easy going, knowledgeable and passionate about this unique environment and we learnt so much during our tour. Lunch was delicious, & in a beautiful location. The water in the river was crystal clear. We got to see 4 Cagou birds which was very special. The park was well maintained and the toilet facilities were very clean and dotted all along the way. Would definitely say this day trip has been one of the highlights of our time in New Caledonia. Highly recommend.

Once we had managed to find our way out of Noumea town in our rented car, the drive to the Park was easy and the result very rewarding, though an earlier start and a full day there would have been ideal. There is an excellent informative map available, and good quality roads in the park. Most welcome was the very inexpensive shuttle which takes a tour of the park area not available by private car, pausing at places of interest, or with a schedule allowing a drop off for an independent walk. (Note the river is blue when the sky is blue; don't expect a refund).

Just the scenery on the way to the Blue River
Provincial Park makes it worth the trip.
Although it’s only about 60 kilometres from
Noumea, it took us around an hour and a half driving time. Once you enter the Park (300 XPF for students/seniors), it is another 23 kilometres of more scenic winding road to the Perignon Bridge. There, you need a bicycle or to take the shuttle bus to see more of the Park, although there are many walks available in the park well before you get to Pont Perignon. We opted for cycling from the bridge using the Sud Loisirs hire company, and booked online ahead of time (especially recommended during school holidays and weekends). The rainforest and Cagou birds can be seen further into the park, which may be a bit far to walk to from the Bridge. There are plenty of excellent signposted spots for viewpoints, hiking tracks and picnics, with tables set individually in strategic locations along the way. It is around 13 kilometres to cycle to the end of the road from the Perignon Bridge (the multi- day GR SUD hike also continues further from here). The wide open forest and red dirt country expanses, Blue River and sunken forest, rainforest tracks, and bird life make this a wonderful destination for experiencing the Caledonian bush.

We had the great pleasure of spending the day with the infamous Francois Tran who retains vast knowledge of botany, archaeology, history and geology. When we asked him to help us find the rare Kagu bird, only found in New Caledonia, he promptly led us to the beautiful blue river National park which sprawls over 9000 hectares of bright orange mineral rich soil in the southern province of New Caledonia.
With a long walk into the dense rainforest, some strange bird calls and some scratching in the rainforest foliage we found and photographed this weird looking flightless endangered and bird that doesn’t know how to scratch so it jams it’s beak quite ferociously into the ground to get worms.
Francois made this day memorable and special.
The day ended as the sun set with a visit to the Le grand Kaori 1000 year old tree and a walk to the drowned forest. Special place ♥️🇫🇷🇳🇨

We really enjoyed our day at this park. However, finding information beforehand was tricky, so this is what worked for us:
We hired a car and drove from Noumea to the park reception. It was about an hours drive, fairly windy roads, but Google maps was pretty clear getting through Noumea.
At the Park reception we paid 3000 XPF for 2 adults, 2 students (bring student cards for uni students) for entrance and the shuttle bus.
We then drove to Pont Perignon - which is the last part of the park you can drive to.
At that point you can hire bikes and book to go kayaking - we didn't look into those options.
We walked across the bridge to the shuttle.
We took the shuttle all the way to the end point - Vieux Refuge.
We then walked back to Grand Kaori. That walk is about 5km, it's not very hard and you can take some little paths off the main track to see the river. We saw a cagou (national bird of new Caledonia) near the Gue de la Pourina stop. At the same spot we walked to the river and paddled in very clear water.
At the Grand Kaori stop we did the walk all the way around - we were very quiet and saw 2 more cagou in the forest area, as well as other birdlife. We recommend walking quietly and slowly to make the most of it.
Once we had finished we waited at the Grand Kaori stop for the shuttle to pick us up and take us back to Pont Perignon.
It's well worth the day out. Take your own water and food.

Could someone tell me the name of the Company hiring bikes and kayaks at the Riviera Bleue Park please? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks.

How often do the shuttles leave the main gate. Do you need to pre book or just turn up?

We had a car so after buying the entrance ticket we drove to where one rents the bikes...so don't know about the shuttle other than I read that they have one. I can tell you though that they are very well organized at this Parc...

I am going to be on a cruise that stops in Noumea in December. I am a bird watcher and I would like to try to see the Kagu. How would I locate a local guide that can show me some of the birds in Parc de la Rivière Bleue?
Thanks,
Joe Church
