Good local museum
2019년 7월
We visited this museum as part of an arranged tour. We thought that it had good displays that were well arranged in the six exhibit halls. The camera fee was 50 manat, so we decided against taking photos. The tour started to the left where the customary "presidents hall" is located which extolled the great deeds of the president and the development of Turkmenistan. The next hall had specimens of flora and fauna. We were quite interested in the diversity of the Mary Region, as there seemed to be a wide variety of creatures here that we had not seen in the other provincial museums that we had visited in Dashoguz and Turkmenbashi. There were at least three species of poisonous snakes that inhabited the Region.

There were many archaeological exhibits from Merv and other ruins in the province. These were mostly clay, but exhibits from the copper and iron age were also on show. Many local artifacts were on display including jewelry, clothing, carpets, items of daily use and weapons. A ger was an interesting exhibit. We enjoyed our short visit here, as the tour was completed in 40 minutes. The building is relatively new, as it was constructed in 2010 at a cost of $18 million. The use of white marble on the exterior was commonplace on major buildings in Ashgabat, and also a few in this city.

We thought that the exterior of the museum was impressive, with the fountain, which was not working, being the centerpiece. A few benches were placed around the fountain, and sculptures of an urn, birds and deer were on the lawns. There is also a great view of the Gurbanguly Hajji Mosque from the steps of the museum. On either side of the entrance of the museum, are sculptures of heroes of the Seljuk Empire. To the left, Tughril Beg, the founder of the Seljuk Empire. Tughril Beg is famous for a battle at Merv where his forces defeated a much larger Ghaznavid army in 1040. To the right is Sultan Ahmad Sanjar, who was the longest serving ruler of the Seljuk Empire. He ruled between 1118-1157 and was buried at Merv.

We thought that this was a good museum and provided us with a better understanding of the ancient city of Merv which we had visited earlier in the day. Mary is a small city and many attractions are within walking distance including the Library, presidents statue and war memorial.

Museo particolare
2019년 8월
All'interno del museo ci sono cose molto particolari e altre molto interessanti. Sicuramente è un museo grande, ben tenuto e moderno. Ci sono molti reperti della zona di Gonur Depe e di Merv quindi vale la pena visitarlo.

Relatively boring museum
2019년 6월 • 커플
Compared to many other museums in that region this museum is quite a letdown. There is nothing special aside from some noteworthy artifacts. But you are given almost no explanation in English. For us it felt a bit like a gap filler since Mary does not have much to offer for tourists aside of Merv of course. But as soon as you are finished with Merv there is nothing too exciting to do in Mary.

Artifacts from local ancient cities

In a newer building, this museum displays artifacts from Merv and Gonur Depe. There is a section on ethnic culture. Useless to foreign tourist is the very large displays about the first president of Turkmenistan.

Guter Querschnitt

A must to see artefacts from Gonur Depe
2017년 10월 • 친구
Found this museum very well organised with artefacts displayed extremely well. We had visited the archaeological site of Gonur Depe the previous day and to see the comprehensive collection of amazing things from there really made it for us. There are plenty of good exhibits from Merv too.
I particularly enjoyed seeing the ethnic jewellery, traditional costumes and the yurt.
The female museum staff are ever present in every room watching your every move.

Has some information about the area. Skip the bit about the president. Some good exhibits about Merv . You are followed around everywhere not sure why.

Interesting ethnic display
2018년 5월 • 커플
You need about an hour to visit the museum.
The ethnic display is really great, including a small yurt and numerous pieces of the ethnic jewellery.
The ancient section is also very good, with items from 6 millennium BC.

interesting quick visit
2018년 4월 • 커플
Nothing spectacular but surely worth a quick visit to see lots of different local stuff concentrated in one place: from animals, to paintings, to maps, and even a nice yurt reconstruction.
