Really worth a visit. Colourful and full of wonderful items. A good place to shop for those gifts and souvenirs. Not tacky. Good quality and no hassle bargaining.

The Allakuli Khan Tim Market is located in between the Allakuli Khan madrassah and Allakuli Khan caravanserai in the eastern section of the old city. It has a western and eastern entrance. The western entrance is in the passageway shared with the Toshhovli palace. If you approach from this area, the many domes (12 small, 2 large) will be seen on the roof. The front of the building has brick columns at either end which have a decorative design under the cap. On either side of the columns are small recessed arches which are painted white at the top.

Entry into the bazaar was gained through a portal shaped design with an arch below. The arch had a log at the top above the wooden double doors and this seemed to be a part of the original structure. Above the door was a white plaque confirming the year of construction of the Tim i.e. between 1835-38. To the right of the door was the current name of the building, "Craftsmen Center Master Class School". There were a few ancient sticks protruding from the front of the building which confirmed it's authenticity.

The eastern entrance was also interesting, as the Caravanserai gate is the exit of the bazaar. This historic gate is known by locals as the Divan-Begi gate. Divan-Begi was the chief tax collector at the time, and all trading of goods in the Tim were taxed, with the proceeds of this tax used to support the city library, which was housed in the Allakuli Khan madrasah next door. The gates here are huge imposing structures, which were meant to be in harmony with the nearby eastern city gates (Palvan Darvaza). This is a great photo op to get the two gates in a single shot.

The Tim is 76m X 26m, and is not a large trading area, but was efficiently used by having customers in lines and a Rais, who was an official who checked weights and kept order by use of a whip (darra). It still serves as a trading area, but now for souvenirs. While shopping inside, take a look at the light coming from the domes to appreciate the great construction techniques used nearly 200 years ago. Caravans would arrive from mainly Russia, China and Iran. The goods would be purchased by the vendors in the Tim, who were required to lease spaces for at least a year. Goods were also exported from the Caravan area.

The need for the Tim and Caravanserai arose in the early 1830's, as the city had outgrown it's markets. The pond which was outside the eastern wall was filled in and the inner city wall broken to construct the new caravanserai, Tim bazaar and madrassah. All of these projects were funded by and named in honour of Allakuli Khan. This is the reason for the openings in the old city wall here if you walk along the wall in this section. This is an area of great importance in the history of the old city, and well worth a visit, with the added bonus of souvenir shopping in the Tim.
