The Angaryk gate is the only gate remaining of Dichan Kala which is regularly used by vehicular traffic. It was so named as it leads to the nearby district of Angaryk. We thought that this was the best of the remaining gates of the old city walls. It is easily reached by taking a short walk south, out of the southern gate (Tosh darvoza) of the Inner City walls. This gate was the road to AllakuliKhan’s summer residence, known as Bogishamol.

As you walk towards the gate, the three domes atop the gatehouse are clearly seen, with the middle being the largest. The interior columns were brick capped with no design, but as these were interior columns they would not have been decorated. The restored city wall actually extends approximately 100 meters on your left towards the inner city. The wall has semicircular watching turrets every 40-50 meters (three total) which give an idea of how the wall was used in ancient times. This didn't seem to be a practical section of the wall, and we thought it was added for tourists to block the view of the residences nearby. The historical wall would have run along the nearby Flobod Street, and encircled the city. The interior ceiling and wall of the guardhouse was painted white.

The view from Flobod street is much more impressive, as the restored brick columns, although not decorated were an imposing sight. This gate would have been the first sight of the city for travelers before entering the city. Caravans laden with goods would be asked to enter the city via the east gate (Koy Darvaza) which was a customs checkpoint. The old city walls may be followed to the left for a further 300 meters. A great photo op here, is to capture both inner and outer wall gates in a single photo, with the inner city wall gate (Tosh darvaza) shown through the arches of the Angaryk Gate.

The Dishan Kala walls were built over a three year period, and finished in 1842. It is said that over 200,000 persons worked on the wall. Allakulikhan ordered the outer wall built to encircle the city for a total of 5.6 km. The average height of the wall was between 6-8 meters. The wall originally had ten gates and we were able to visit three including the Angaryk gate. The other gates include Koy darvaza, which is at the western end of the Train Station Park and Kosh darvaza which is a short walk north to the intersection of Amir Timur Street, from the northern inner city gate. The restored Gandimyan gate is a short walk north west of the train station on Amir Timur Street and can be seen, looking north from the Koy Darvaza.

The inner wall city gates may also be visited, and these are at the cardinal points of the old city. A fifth gate known as the Caravanserai gate or Divan Begi gate, is located at the eastern entrance to the Allakulikhan Tim bazaar.
