I only dimly knew of Mari Sandoz, but I love to visit writer's homes and the centers associated with their lives and works, so this became a stop motivated by curiosity as we passed through Chadron on our way from Fort Robinson to the Pine Ridge Reservation and beyond. I am so glad we took the time. The exhibits are first rate and introduce you to this area of Nebraska that shaped the world of the writer, who is higly regarded in the state. And if you are fortunate, your greeter and enthusiastic guide to all things Sandoz will be Lori, the center staff member who shared stories and lore of the area and literary context. I was delighted and only regret we did not have more time to wander and learn. Lori, thank you for introducing us to the work of Mari Sandoz. I read "Old Jules" on the plane heading back to Atlanta, and I wish I was visiting the center again soon to talk with you about it!

My sister and I went in to see the paintings for which our sister was the model. We were the only ones in there. The curator came to say HI. She found out who we were, and we were stuck for an hour! EXCELLENT private tour / education / conversation...about everything Mari Sandoz and everything else in the world. She's from California, and we're from California, so she had lots of connections with us, particularly where I live on the Central Coast. It was spectacular.

This museum was on the 2020 Nebraska Passport Tour. This was my second trip to Chadron and my wife's first. The museum is located on the campus of Chadron College. The setting is very nice the area provides wonderful scenery while driving.
The museum was small, but very well done. The displays were informative and interesting. While I had heard of Mari Sandoz, I was not familiar with any of her specific works. After visiting, I decided to purchase a copy of Old Jules in the gift shop.
Along with the Sandoz displays, they have an area for visiting artists. The artist on display during our visit had artwork related to the area and Native Americans. This display was also enjoyable.
What made this visit stand out was the guide working during our visit. She had a wealth of knowledge about the Sandoz family that she graciously shared with us. Her passion for the subject was wonderful.
Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

This was just a lucky stop for us. The museum is on the grounds of the college in Chadron. It is small and a little hard to find but we got directions from a student and found it easily enough. Parking is not a problem. Mari Sandoz was abused both by her parents and her husband. Her father did not approve of her writing. She wrote several books that were published but she also destroyed more than 70 manuscripts that were never published. When we were there they had sand paintings on the floor and they were not totally blocked off. I managed to step on one but so had a lot of other people.

This little museum is neatly tucked away on the Chadron State College main campus. It really is a hidden gem. It currently includes a traveling exhibit of photos from World War One and a permanent exhibit about the life of its namesake, among other exhibits. It is very worthwhile to visit. In the hour plus that I was there I was the only visitor. As such I would consider it a very underused hidden gem. Perhaps if the college would put a few signs out it would get more attention.

This is truly a rare gem! If you know any of Mari Sandoz's works, you will really appreciate a visit at this beautiful site with prarie plants just outside the door. If you have not read her books, you will know what you have been missing after a visit to this beautiful facility.

The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, located on the Chadron State College campus, is in a lovely building that was once a Carneige Library. The upper floor has artifacts of
Mari Sandoz life and writings presented in a very interesting way.
The lower floor has a history of the area that highlights the cattle industry.
Wonderful photographs, Native American artifacts and items from local and regional ranching are shown and explained.
The exterior landscaping is just wonderful as is the Sandoz statue in the garden.
